The styles are varied in this wonderful show, but the quality always high, with renditions of familiar classics along with a few original songs, with some numbers that are truly thrilling, among them the opening song, a bluegrass flavored "It's a Time for Joy" with Karen Peck and New River, the Gaither Vocal Band with David Phelps doing an exquisite tenor solo on "The Christmas Song" (and Mark Lowry doing Johnny Mathis !), "Children Go Where I Send Thee" with The Bishops giving us harmonies from heaven, the country rockin' sound of "Go Tell" with The Martins, and best of all, "Mary, Did You Know ?" (music and lyrics by Mark Lowry and Buddy Green), sung by the Gaither Vocal Band featuring an emotionally stirring solo by Mark Lowry. The words, melody, and interpretation of this song fills my eyes with tears when I hear it...the disc is worth it for this number alone.
The music is so inspired, I probably would have preferred less humor...one segment in particular isn't that funny and has a "secular entertainment" feel to it, but that is a minor quibble when compared to the overwhelming spirit of this disc, which I'll enjoy any time of the year, with the musicians and singers giving 100% of their talent, and moving one to praise and worship the Lord, in the true spirit of Christmas.
The show was filmed in the Alabama Theater, a lovely ornate theater in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2001, and total running time is 90 minutes.
The DVD extras include an interesting piece titled "Project Spotlight" with people like Joni Eareckson Tada, and subtitles are also available.

Titanic Revealed Review

Titanic Revealed.
I just purchased the DVD of this production. After watching the entire feature along with extras I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed.
From the way this DVD is promoted you expect a documentary of Dr. Ballard going back to the Titanic to go over what the grave robbers have done to it and document its condition. Sadly, we get that but in much less quantity that I expected. What we do often get is mini segments about Titanic collectors, super secret Navy missions, commentaries from people within the community and a debate about whether salvaging is appropriate. The interview with Ken Marschall is especially akward.
The segement about Dr. Ballard's "super secret" mission I think was being over dramatic and unecessary. Many people knew of his dives on the Thresher and the Scorpion right before the Titanic. So thats not some huge revelation as to why he got to search for the ship in 1985.
Personally, I was hoping for something akin to the National Geographic Special "Secrets of the Titanic." While filmed in 1985 with less sophisticated cameras. It honored the ship with no Jim Cameron style fluff and detours. That 1985 documentary stands out against later videos - it has heart, its human and it focuses on the ship. The Titanic is the star; not a sub, not a film maker. Dr. Ballard's original piece humanizes the wreck. The humanization is one of the most powerful elements of the Titanic story.
In the final anaylsis this production does not live up to how it hypes itself. It should be titled "Titanic Debates with some footage of Bob Ballard again at the Titanic." That is far more honest as to what this DVD is. Only the special section only partially redeems itself. It though is way too short and recycles video from the main feature.
I agree with Dr. Ballard it is terrible the way the wreck is being plundered for profit. Titanic is a graveyard and should be treated as such - with great respect. It should be honored and allowed to rest without vultures picking at the carcass. More than one Titanic survivor felt that way.
For the price (almost $18) stay away from this DVD. If it were $5 I'd say its fine. However, for the hefty price tag for an hour and 15 minutes of a presentation that doesn't live up to its billing. Don't waste your money.

Prayer Beads: Complete Series Review

Prayer Beads: Complete Series

Prayer Beads is 9 tales of the dark and creepy, srrt of a "Tales from the Darkside" look and feel but more a "Masters Of Horror" mentality. Some of the tales seem overly ambitious, as in, there's almost too much crammed into a 30 minute segment and focus is lost, but that's a minor complaint. There's a couple that discover a vending machine in the middle of nowhere that dispenses questionable beverages, there's cute little seals that draw big crowds to a river and turn out to be nowhere near as cute as originally thought, and there's even a creepy "Hello Kitty" knock-off cartoon that appears on a young boy's computer and makes his wishes come true. All of these tales come off pretty well considering their origin, which is apparently Japanese TV (cable, I'd say, the language isn't always PC and the gore flies at times). A worthwhile anthology to fans of Japanese horror. 5 out of 5 stars.

Having enjoyed all episodes and specials released to date, Series 6 is equally delightful and wonderful. The stories are as captivating as ever, and the characters are just as endearing! If you are truly a fan of Herriot, you will not be disappointed!!! Series 6 is an absolute must in your DVD library.

All Creatures Great and Small Series Six continues the heart-warming tales of James Herriot (Christopher Timothy), his wife Helen (Lynda Bellingham) and his volatile but warm-hearted partner, Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy). The period is now the early Fifties, but the Dales are slow to embrace the world of tomorrow. Even with Calum (John McGlynn) on the team, the vets see little of the leisure that the modern age promises.

I just received this DVD set as a Christmas gift. I was really surprised and excited because as much as I enjoy the show, I never am able to catch it on TV. The product listed here is a 3-disc set with various episdoes of the DIY Network Scrapbooking Show. Each episode runs about 20 minutes, usually covering 4 projects similar in subject. The best thing about it is, sometimes they go a little fast because of time constraints, so with a DVD, you can pause, FF/rewind, and replay all you want. For anyone who enjoys scrapbooking and getting new ideas for doing so, this is a must!
