(More customer reviews)The History Channel re-aired this series recently in a marathon one Saturday. I was at work, and it was a slow day, and we happened to turn on the TV when the programs were up to about Abraham Lincoln, in the early afternoon. For the remainder of the day, besides a few minutes here and there of having to take phone calls, my co-worker and I were absolutely glued to the TV. When 4:00 came around, I got home as quick as I could, and my fiancee and I saw and watched at least another hour of the program together.
Of course, the programs are not as in-depth as some of the more serious history buffs might have hoped for, but they were great for providing not only a general overview of each President's administration, but also for giving you a sense of the feel of the times in which each President lived; plus there was plenty of misc. trivia along the way - "useless information", as I like to call it - and I loved that, as well, because it's just interesting stuff that you would never hear in a history class.
My fiancee and I intend to buy this program and show it to our kids one day, because it seemed very much to us like something that would be good for them, and we plan to put a lot of work into their education.
In short, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND this series.

Here are the episodes from season 3:
Did You See the Sunrise? - This 2 hour episode is my favorite episode of this season. This is a complex tale about the Vietnam War, a POW camp, physical and psychological torture, brainwashing, and assassination. This episode helped to define the intensity and seriousness of the series. Magnum has some very traumatic flashbacks to the Vietnam War. This is the episode that introduces the Maggie Poole character. This is also the episode where Higgins constructs his model of the Bridge On The River Kwai. We find out that Magnum's favorite movie is Stalag 17. This episode is classic Magnum all the way through.

Ki's Don't Lie - This is the first part of a crossover with the TV series Simon and Simon. Morgan Fairchild also appears. An old Hawaiian statue brings trouble to anyone who possesses it. The complete story, including the Simon and Simon episode, appeared as bonus material on the season 1 DVD set.
The Eighth Part of the Village - Magnum goes to the loading dock to pick up a package for Higgins. The package contains a surprise.
Past Tense - T.C. is forced at gunpoint to fly into a prison and help one of the prisoners escape.
Black on White - This wonderful episode creates some humorous odd couple type moments as Magnum and Higgins are quarantined together in the guest house because they may have been exposed to "African Hemorrhagic Fever." Meanwhile, Higgins is being targeted for assassination by an African Mau Mau who is sneaking around the estate. We hear some fascinating stories about Higgins's military experiences in Kenya. Hearing that handheld Pac-Man game always cracks me up. Bibi Kiamini is such a babe!
Flashback - Magnum wakes up in the year 1936. Other than that, everything else is the exact same as it always is. This fantasy episode is highly enjoyable.
Foiled Again - Higgins enters a fencing competition. During the competition, Higgins kills his opponent. Oops!
Mr. White Death - Ernest Borgnine appears as a professional wrestler.
Mixed Doubles - Magnum is the bodyguard/babysitter for a spoiled brat teenager who also happens to be a professional tennis champion. Her character is so deliberately awful that the episode is kind of fun, in a cheesy sort of way. Just don't take this one too seriously, and I think you'll enjoy it.
Almost Home - Magnum has to clear the name of a World War II soldier who was wrongly court martialed.
Heal Thyself - Magnum has to help an old military friend who has been falsely accused of murder.
Of Sound Mind - Roscoe Lee Browne appears as Magnum's butler. Yes, Magnum has a butler, because he just inherited $50 million dollars. This crazily fun episode is a wonderfully humorous satire. The masquerade party is quite interesting.
The Arrow That Is Not Aimed - Magnum befriends a Samurai warrior, who is trying to protect a valuable ancient porcelain plate from 6 ninjas. This is a wonderful tale of friendship, action, adventure, and humor. I love the way that Magnum finds out which plate is the real one. This is a great episode.
Basket Case - Magnum acts as social worker for a teenager who lives with foster parents. (Yeah, yeah. I know. Not every episode is a winner.)
Birdman of Budapest - In this relatively bad episode, a guest on the estate is driving Higgins crazy. (And no, I'm not talking about Magnum.)
I Do? - In order to solve a case, Magnum pretends to be married.
Forty Years From Sand Island - Magnum tries to find out what really happened at a World War II Japanese internment camp.
Legacy From A Friend - Magnum has to solve a murder case.
Two Birds Of a Feather - This horrible episode was to be the pilot for a new spinoff series. Fortunately, the new series was never made.
By Its Cover - Magnum helps protect an old friend from a corrupt police officer.
The Big Blow - This is a cheesy satire of Key Largo. With a hurricane in progress, several guests are trapped at the estate. All the usual cliches are there, including a woman who is 9 months pregnant.
Faith and Begorrah - This masterpiece of an episode continues a running joke that was started in "The Elmo Ziller Story" from season 2: around the time of World War I, Higgins's father served in the British military. As a result, Higgins has many illegitimate half brothers and illegitimate half sisters scattered all over the world. Naturally, this causes much embarrassment for Higgins. This time, the half brother is an Irish priest. Note how Zeus and Apollo react when Higgins tells Magnum, "He's... illegitimate." The desk clerk at the hotel is played by Donald P. Bellisario, the guy who created the Magnum P.I. series.

Billy Joe Bob - A cowboy from Texas, who is searching for his younger sister, runs around the island and punches everyone in the jaw.
Dead Man's Channel - In a tribute to "Raiders Of The Lost Ark," the archaeologist's daughter in this episode is named Marion. Tom Selleck had been the original choice to play Indiana Jones in the movie. Selleck would eventually play a satire of the character in the season 8 episode "Legend Of The Lost Art."
The Woman On The Beach - This is my favorite season 2 episode. It's full of action, adventure, mystery, and romance. Guest actress Judith Chapman gives an absolutely brilliant performance. The final scene of this episode would be redone as the final scene in the season 5 episode "Mac's Back."
From Moscow To Maui - A Soviet military pilot defects and lands his airplane in the U.S.
Memories Are Forever - This two part episode is extremely important to the history of the series. We learn a lot about Magnum's activities in Vietnam. This episode introduced the Michelle character. This episode will be referenced through flashbacks in quite a few future episodes.
Tropical Madness - Magnum and Higgins get involved in a love triangle with a young British lady who is visiting the estate. Higgins punches Magnum in the jaw. No one believes Magnum when he says he was attacked by a Sumo wrestler and a dwarf.
Wave Goodbye - A Vietnam veteran, who's suffering terrible psychological pain from the war, is the lead suspect in the murder of a young female surf champion.
Mad Buck Gibson - Mad Buck Gibson is an eccentric writer who is visiting the estate. His character is very interesting, and makes this a great episode. There is no villain in this episode.
The Taking Of Dick McWilliams - Relatively boring episode about a man who gets kidnapped.
The Sixth Position - Magnum and a ballet dancer get into some arguments, which leads to romantic attraction.
Ghost Writer - This episode is a satire that makes fun of big corporations. The villain here is a big corporation. I love capitalism, and I found this episode to be very entertaining and funny. Guest actor Elisha Cook Jr. plays a character that is different than the "Icepick" character that he would play in future episodes.
The Jororo Kill - This episode is elevated to greatness because it has one of the most interesting villains of any episode. The villain is a professional assassin who dresses up as a woman, and he is very skilled at both of these things.
Computer Date - Magnum tries to find out which employee is stealing secrets from a corporation.
Try To Remember - Magnum gets in a terrible car accident, but he can't remember what happened.
Italian Ice - Magnum rescues a young lady who is being held prisoner in an Italian castle. The young lady turns out to be a crazy psycho who becomes obsessed with Magnum.
One More Summer - Magnum joins a football team so he can protect one of the players.
Texas Lightning - Magnum gets hired by a rich woman from Texas. Her character is quite interesting. I love this episode.
Double Jeopardy - A movie is being filmed at the estate.
The Last Page - Magnum is hired by a Vietnam Veteran who can't get over what happened during the war.
The Elmo Ziller Story - This episode introduces a running joke that will continue throughout the rest of the series: during World War I, Higgins's father was in the British military and traveled all over the world. As a result, Higgins has many illegitimate half brothers and illegitimate half sisters who are scattered all over the world.
Three Minus Two - Magnum gets involved in the fashion industry.

The War That Made America: The Story of the French and Indian War (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)WOW! To many Americans, the French and Indian War, was a casual footnote in a long ago history class. Ditto for references to Braddock's Defeat, Fort Duquesne, and Geo. Washington's initial exposure to warfare. To a few more, it might generate a recollection that, if they ever read it, "The Last of the Mohicans" by James F. Cooper, was set during this war. It also inspired Longfellow's epic poem, "Evangeline". A reference to the Siege of Louisbourg or the Plains of Abraham will likely result in a blank look. My experience over the years has been that our Canadian neighbors and friends have, in many ways, a better understanding of what this war meant to North America than we Americans do. I refer not only of the loss of Canada by France to Britain, but the planting and sprouting of issues during this war, that would fuel and feed the sparks of the American Revolution. This series does a wonderful job of taking much history, keeping it factual, chronilogical, understandable, AND, above all, INTERESTING. It somewhat came across as if I were watching an action/adventure/war movie EXCEPT that I've read several dozen books about the French and Indian War (aka the Seven Years War) and the historical accuracy is generally here. To those of you with an Ph.D. in history I say, relax, enjoy, and remember; to those without, view, enjoy, and learn. Your time will be well spent.

All Creatures Great & Small: The Complete Series 1 Collection Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD presents in a simple straightforward package the first TV season (13 episodes of approx 55 mins each)of the classic "All Creatures Great and Small" series based on the books of the Veterinary Surgeon James Herriot.
An aditional one hour documentary interview with the real James Herriot is also included.
The original series was a weekly "must see" event and I found myself drawn back to watch just one more episode on this DVD despite serious attempts to make it last.
The picture quality is what you would expect for a 25 year old British TV show however this in no way detracts from its enjoyment. The happy flowing music that rolls with the beautiful Yorkshire Dales scenery puts you right in the mood to get to know and experience the trials and tribulations of James Herriot and the people and animals he meets.
Although the books were written by Herriot the main characters that stand out in this series are his new employer Siegfried Farnon and Siegfrieds brother Tristan. Both characters are played extremely well by two excellent british actors Robert Hardy and Peter Davison. Hardy extracts tha maximum entertainment from Siegfrieds ebullient often frustrating character.
In the end you will connect with the Dales farmers and wonder at the 'black magic' of veterinary science in the mid 1930's but like Gerald Durrels books the animals that entertain the most are of the human species.
This DVD will guarantee a good satisfying viewing experience and while not intended to be a comedy provides some hilarious situations for the main characters.

(More customer reviews)Nice collection. All shows included, the original movie, and a couple of "Extras" DVD's.
However, it is important for you to know that the MEGASet comes in a large binding book. All the DVD's are pushed into cardboard slots (a lot like the coin collector books). This means if you take the DVD's out a lot they are going to get scratched - EVEN If you are careful.
I have a soft, CD carrier that works very much the same, and I'm meticulous about not putting pressure on it. Still my CD's have gotten marred over the years using this.
If the DVD's were mounted on a spindle holder (like a normal case) this would be much much better. There is a reason that design was chosen, it protects the product.
If you just want these DVD's to sit on a shelf, okay then. But if you are going to use them, *****BE AWARE***** you may wind up damaging them. Put them in real cases as soon as you get them.
The cardboard slots are also quite tight, causing lots of pressure. And they have a tendency to break easily (the glue comes off, causing the DVD to slip down - more opportunity for scratching).
Highly recommended that you get a real storage system for this excellent collection.
Should also know that the original movie is provided in Widescreen format, whereas the TV series is provided in Full Frame.

(More customer reviews)One of the funniest series ever on TV. Danny DeVito, Andy Kaufmann, Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza, Marilu Henner and Christopher Lloyd, some of the funniest people ever. It is my pleasure to write a review for this TV series. This season has Louie not knowing what to do when he dates a "nice girl", Christopher Lloyd (Reverend Jim) starting as a regular cast member in the third episode, and Rhea Perlman, Herve Villechaize and Eric Severeid as guest stars. Marc Anthony Danza, who plays a sick child, is Tony Danza's real-life son.
01 Louie and the Nice Girl gs: Rhea Perlman: Zena, the woman who refills the vending machines has a crush on Louie.
02 Honor Thy Father: Alex visits his estranged father in the hospital.
03 Reverend Jim: a Space Odyssey: The cabbies help Reverand Jim get a job as a cabbie.
04 Nardo Loses Her Marbles: After Elaine loses it at an art gallery reception, she comes on to Alex.
05 Wherefore Art Thou, Bobby?: Bobby helps a new young actor, who gets a job his 2nd day in New York.

Are You Being Served? Again (The Complete Series) Review

(More customer reviews)I am very happy that this adorable BBC series is now available on DVD. For fans of Are You Being Served?, Grace and Favour (known as AYBS? Again! in the USA) was a fun way to see Mr. Humphries, Miss Brahms, Capt. Peacock, Mrs. Slocombe, and Mr. Rumbold together again. Yes, there are often the same old jokes like the stuck elevator and Capt. Peacocks womanizing, but the new setting brought a lot of freshness to the show. The Grace Bros. employees who stuck with the company until its closing (which, of course, does not include Mr. Lucas; Trevor Bannister probably would not have done this show anyway) receive, as their pension, a country manor house. They must abandon past titles (however reluctantly) and work together so that the manor house earns money. The best part of the series is the adorable character Mavis Moulterd, daughter of the gruff farmer of Millstone Manor (played by Fleur Bennett). As is customary, she shares the bed with the chef. Of course, with the staff quitting after meeting Mr. Rumbold, Mr. Humphries is given the chef's quarters. The sexual, but in a cute way, tension between Mavis and Mr. Humphries really makes the show. The rich colors of the countryside also make this series refreshing when compared to the monotonous store setting of AYBS? Plus, we finally get to see Mrs. Slocombe's pussy[cat]!
The DVD includes all 12 of the episodes that were originally aired on BBC in 1992-93. The first episode can also be found as an extra on the DVD set for seasons 6-10 of AYBS? The menu page is a little awkward to use when choosing an episode. To pick an individual episode, you click the arrow key on the DVD remote the number of times to correspond to the episode number on the disc (i.e. 5 times to get episode #5). Other than that, the shows play great. The extras include cast bios (only a list of T.V. and film appearances which was disappointing) and trailers of other BBC shows. Lack of extras aside, if you like the characters of AYBS?, you will like AYBS? Again!
