(More customer reviews)It's a good time for NewsRadio fans. The release of the first and second seasons in May of 2005 was a dream come true (not associated with Dream Come True Garage Door Openers). As nice as it is to have just the episodes on DVD format, the set included a gag reel, a short featurette and best of all, around 20 commentary tracks from the likes of Paul Simms, Dave Foley, Stephen Root, Maura Tierney, Andy Dick, and the rest of the cast and writers that are still around (Phil Hartman and Drake Sather have both died since the show). Although some fans complained about the video quality (which wasn't great, but was more than acceptable to me), the DVD set was a truly incredible release.
Well, the news has come in, and season 3 is coming out at the end of February (and hopefully that date will not be changed). NewsRadio's third season was when one of, if not the greatest comedy show was at it's prime (which is really the first four seasons, but 3 and 4 are out of the park). I was worried due to the time lapse between DVD releases, which makes it even better news that there will be ten more commentaries, another gag reel, and multiple featurettes (that all sound a bit better than the one included on the first set).
Some of my all time favorite episodes are here...
President - Where Mr. James runs for President and Matthew grow a moustache.
Arcade - Star Gate Defender, SATs and moldy sandwiches.
Daydream - Heat induced hallucinations plague the office.
Movie Star - James Caan visits WNYX and finds out what make Bill McNeil tick.
The Trainer - Dave turns out to be Canadian and the office is shocked. Meanwhile, Bill enrolls at the Ted Chambers gym where he has to deal with the money grubbing antics of Ben Stiller.
Rap - Bill is enraged to find out that Rap music not only has lyrics, but that they are offensive and readily available to the children and the elderly.
Complaint Box - A favorite among anyone who has seen it.
Airport - Dave and Bill are snowed in at an airport in the midwest. One of my all time top five episodes.
The Real Deal - Bill McNeil; Meet Jerry Seinfeld.
Space - What would NewsRadio be like in Outer Space? The answers in this episode.
Every single episode here, all 25, are great. There isn't one that falls below the line of excellence. The ones I listed are just a few personal favorites. The episodes that will have commentary tracks (from everybody again), will be Arcade, Stocks, Daydream, Christmas, The Trainer, Rose Bowl, Our 50th Episode, Sleeping, Mistake and Space. I for one am looking forward to these commentaries almost as much as I am to having the episodes. The other extras include a gag reel (I think), Space: From Table Read to Film, A Visit to Andy's Trailer and Joe Furey's One Man NewsRadio. This promises to be an amazing release.

I got a chance to see the DVD. It is simply Disc 2 from Newsradio - The Complete Third Season.
The packaging is different, but the menu and selections appear to be the same.

(More customer reviews)The 1990s were a notoriously bad decade for sitcoms. Hundreds of Seinfeld- and Wayans-wannabes flooded the airwaves and, in general, aside from Seinfeld and Sports Night, few had any originality or staying power. NewsRadio is a glorious exception, a bright and occasionally very biting comedy about the workplace which is kindred to Mary Tyler Moore and Newhart more so than to Just Shoot Me. NewsRadio's laughs came from brilliant observations, recurring gags, well-defined characters and logical but wacky plotlines. It was close in vein to Seinfeld's unsentimentality, but far more vicious: one example is in season 3's Daydream episode, for those who saw it, has all the characters experiencing revealing daydreams. It features a vendor whose dream is to be one of the "gang" at WNYX, but as it turns out is hardly known and barely tolerated. NewsRadio invests more in its characters than do most dramas, and never settles for the half-assed laugh-track banality of its contemporaries. This is why it developed such a following, even if it was a very small percentage of the population.
The fourth season of NewsRadio is once again a triumph. With every season, the show kept building upon itself and getting better. There were notable guest appearances: Jon Lovitz has another guest appearance, this time as a suicide jumper exactly one year before joining the cast. Additionally, a pre-Gilmore Girls Lauren Graham begins a stint in this season as an efficiency expert. There were some departures as well: first, Khandi Alexander left the show, despite the fact that her initially poorly-written character had improved a great deal; and, of course, Phil Hartman was murdered by his wife after this season. The knowledge of this invariably tints the experience of watching this season. Nevertheless, these episodes show Hartman at his imperious best: taking over the office (in Who's the Boss?), getting a butler (in The Secret of Management), and becoming a Bob Roberts-type performer (in The Public Domain). Other highlights: Matthew (Andy Dick) gets fired, Dave (Dave Foley) and Lisa (Maura Tierney) split again and then switch jobs, and then switch again. This doesn't stop Lisa from trying to pick the brain of the station's owner, Mr. James (Stephen Root), with hilarious results. I could go on, but ultimately, this is a sitcom that is better enjoyed the less you know going in. Even so, it rewards multiple viewings, which is surprising since many sitcoms don't even reward single viewings. With the release of this show on DVD, it will likely become more popular than ever, and hopefully take its rightful place in the pantheon of great comedy.

The Pee-Wee Herman Show - Live at the Roxy Theater (1983) Review

(More customer reviews)The Pee-Wee Herman Show was a successful performance which catapulted Paul Reuben's career beyond his own imagination.The performance was held in front of a live audience at the Roxy in La for around 5 months. Luckily HBO brilliantly caught one of these live performances and gave people the opportunity to see Pee-Wee Herman. Pee-Wee Herman along with an ensemble cast of notables produced a hilarious performance that had me laughing from start to finish. Let us not ignore the actual set design for the show as well as Jambi the Genie. The show put Pee-Wee on the map of stardom due to his creativity and ingenious ways of entertaining his fans. The show immediately starts with Pee-Wee Herman digging through a bag of toys pulling out one thing after another, and stumbles upon "NAKED GUMBY AHH". Another funny idea was the Mr. Bungle skit. The Mr. Bungle skit was an actual 1950's dramatization on exhibiting manners. The funny part of this whole skit is they actually showed this to little girls and boys back in the 1950's. One scene shows the boy getting served hot food and next to the hot food the cafeteria person places a big piece of cake on the tray. By the end of the skit Pee-Wee says something like "is that piece of cake big enough for ya!?" then does his Pee-Wee laugh. Classic. I think the real interesting phenomenon of Pee-Wee Herman was he could entertain both adults and children. Understandably this led to his hit Saturday Morning cartoon show "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" which had several emmy nominations throughout the late 80's and early 90's. Furthermore Pee-Wee teamed up with Tim Burton to mesh together a film called "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure". The Pee-Wee Herman show was a unique, weird, yet funny performance that catapulted Pee-Wee Herman into a cult classic for many people.

Not quite a children's show, The Pee-Wee Herman Show is slyly subversive, a little bit naughty and always outrageous. Making its premiere as a midnight show on February 7th, 1981, at The Groundlings Theatre in Hollywood, the performance then moved to the famed Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip where it was filmed as part of HBO's new series On Location. Conceived as an homage to children's television programs of the 1950's and 60's, this live stage production features original music, puppets, a cartoon, a short educational film and Pee-wee's hilarious live-action friends.

(More customer reviews)NewsRadio was part of NBC's Must See TV on Thursdays, and Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, and Sundays. Basically, if there was a hole in the schedule this workhorse was plugged in. Unfortunately, that also led to quite a bit of viewer frustration since it was hard to find the series at times.
This set brings together the first two seasons. It starts off with Dave (Dave Foley) being hired as the new Program Director for a New York all news radio station. First, he has to fire the old PD, and make nice with the reporter (Maura Tierney) who wanted the job.
Some of the early episodes only hint at what the characters would become. Jimmy James (Stephen Root) starts out far less wacky than the character became by the fifth season. Phil Hartman's Bill McNeil was brilliant out the blocks. Matthew (Andy Dick) was annoying right from the beginning. MIA from the pilot is Joe Garrelli (Joe Rogan) who joined in the second episode.
Overall, NewsRadio was a great show that never got the recognition it deserved from NBC. Fortunately, it gets a new lease on life thatnks to a very reasonably priced DVD set.
The release date has been changed. The creator of the show heard about the DVD set and called the company to make sure that he was able to add extras to the discs. Now, instead of a bare-banes compilation there will be commentary tracks, out-takes and other extras.
