(More customer reviews)I applaud the release of any Gunsmoke-related production on DVD, including this 1987 made-for-TV reunion movie. Gunsmoke, the longest running western, or drama for that matter, in TV history, was complex and textured and dealt with mature themes with unforgettable characters that became part of our culture. I grew up watching the series, which debuted as a half-hour black and white show, then progressed to one hour and eventually was filmed in color.
Gunsmoke richly deserves a serious DVD release of its episodes, not merely a release of a TV movie here or there.
Few need to be told what his western depicted, it's the story of Marshall Matt Dillon (played to perfection by James Arness), who tamed the lawless Dodge City, Kansas, not only with his gun but with his courage, sense of honor, justice and irreproachable integrity behind the badge.
Along the way, we meet Matt's friends, Kitty Russell (Amanda Blake), owner of the Longbranch Saloon and Matt's long-time love, Doc Adams (Milburn Stone, and Deputy Chester Goode (Dennis Weaver) and later Deputies Festus Hagen (Ken Curtis) and Newly O'Brien (Buck Taylor.) Weekly guest stars represented the cream of the acting crop for decades!
While this TV-Movie reunites Arness, Blake and Taylor, much of the familiar Dodge landscape has changed: Matt has retired and lives as a mountaineer and O'Brien is Marshall. The plot centers around a continuation of a much earlier TV episode, with guest star Steve Forrest reprising his role as the villianous Will Mannon, whom Dillon had previously stopped and arrested.
Now released from prison, Mannon has returned to Dodge for revenge. He holds Miss Kitty hostage to lure the retired lawman back into town to die.
A suspenseful story, Arness' portrayal of Dillon in this TV movie was much less familiar than the TV version, giving Dillon a driven, haunted, almost tragic appearance of a man who had left -- or lost -- everything he had ever cared about. THis is definitely a different Matt Dillon.
The TV movie weaves clips from the episode on which it is based throughout the production.

Gunsmoke: The Second Season, Vol. 2 Review

(More customer reviews)This is classic TV at its best. The transfers are beautiful, the sound is excellent and show, what can I say. This is television the way it was meant to be. I only hope they continue to produce this series until the end. I see so many vintage TV shows start off only to be pulled after one or two seasons. I for one will continue to buy these releases regardless of cost of how they are split up. Lets face it, the studios do not have to release these wonderful shows on DVD. It is just a little extra cash for them. So they can pull the plug anytime they wish. So fans, lets keep supporting the release of this and other great TV from the 50's and 60's.

(More customer reviews)I was surprised to find all three seasons at such a rock bottom price. Since the price was so good, I thought it might have some cheap quality. I check-out reviews others made for single seasons. The clarity and quality on these is 9 to 9.5 out of 10. I have had no freeze or pix problems as of yet (haven't viewed ALL 9, one-sided discs). The storylines are of the quality that Gunsmoke had during the Chester and Quint years. This is a great deal for any western fan. The protagonist, played by Steve McQueen, is a bounty hunter who balances ethics with (of course) the bounty $$$ he's after. 4 to 5 *s!!!.

After posting this review last month, I have been reading the other reviews and have noticed that many are giving these DVD's one or two stars due to the releases of Gunsmoke being split seasons. That is nonsense! I would rather have split seasons of Gunsmoke on DVD rather then no seasons of Gunsmoke on DVD!. Yes, I would love to have them released as full seasons, but that is not going to happen and I'm fine with that since I know I and millons of other Gunsmoke fans are lucky enough to have Gunsmoke being released on DVD in the first place. Keep up the complaints and CBS/Paramount might just say enough and stop with the releases. Just accept them the way they are being released and enjoy them! (Oh and as for the reviewer saying that they messed up Season 2 vol. 1 and we are paying for the mess up, that is bull. I have that season along the with the rest of the sets that were released and Vol. 1 of season 2 as well as the other sets have no such problems. All episodes are all there and are in order!)
5-3-2009: I have just found out thanks to another reviewer, who pointed out what to look for, that there is a mess up on Season two, volume 1. One episode "How to cure a friend" was replaced with "How to kill a friend" I apologize for not seeing it in the first place and saying that there was no mistake. I still give Gunsmoke and each season volume set that has been released five stars despite this very small mess up and I still say that people should not give it a one or two star ratings due to it being split seasons and they should just stop complaining. All the season sets released are great to watch and I am looking foward to buying season 3 vol. 2 in about three weeks.

Since I purchased almost all of the original 30 minute episodes of "Gunsmoke" from Columbia House (four per tape at $25), I am still disappointed that this amazing series was not released in sequence of broadcast, just as it was released by Columbia House.
"Gunsmoke" was so much more than entertainment 50 years ago. Families would gather around the "Cool Blue Fire" to share the stories (and morality tales) told by the actors and writers. Fifty years ago I was six years old, and obviously not cognizant of the great leap forward - into 'adult' territory - which "Gunsmoke" represented.
When I began watching the Columbia House 30 minute episodes, always in order of first broadcast ten years ago, I was amazed at the quality of the productions and the way that the totality had survived across (then) 40 years. Awed.
By selecting the 'best' of "Gunsmoke" the marketers imply that the rest of the series was like every other series on TV: there were only a few episodes worth watching, much less, worth BUYING. My view: that is not true.
This is one series that still deserves to be watched, and remains "must see" TV after 50 years.
I would encourage the release of "Gunsmoke" by seasons, just as "Have Gun Will Travel" is being released.
"Gunsmoke" was the primal American legend brought to black and white TV. It deserves to be seen as it was broadcast, not simply because the nostalgia quotient is higher but because it remains a seminal series.
The definitive episodic TV Western.

(More customer reviews)Gunsmoke - The Third Season, Volume 1 continues the release schedule for one of television's alltime greatest television series. Beloved and revered, this series will always be considered one of the alltime best. Yes, because of its' longevity, but also because of the great acting, directing, and writing displayed on the series.
But still, I cannot recommend these sets. There is no excuse, no justification the studio can make for splitting a 20-season series up and dividing each season into multiple sets. It's greed, shortsighted, fear of producing full season sets that won't sell - maybe one or more or all of these things. But the Western lover, loyal as we are to our favorite stars, our favorite movies and series, are being made to pay a price that is way too high to pay. To think how long it may be before the entire series is released is too painful. Suffice it to say that it will be WAY TOO LONG at the current rate.
At this point, it is probably too much to expect the studio to come to its senses. But it is worth it to say that they need to come to their senses, and soon.
