This box set contains all 26 episodes of this somewhat obscure western filmed in 1961-62. The episodes appear to be complete, and have nice picture quality and sound. If you remember the show like I do , you'll enjoy this set.The show is similar to Wagon Train in that as the circus arrives in a new destination the main cast members ( Richard Jaeckel, John Derek, Chill Wills) get to interact with the guest cast. So each episode has a differant focus. The shows have strong scripts, and good acting. Packaging is first rate also. Timeless is doing a great job with their TV westerns. I'd love to see them release The 1961 NBC Civil War Show The Americans, or The Gray Ghost .

Frontier Circus - The Complete TV Series - 26 episodes! Never syndicated and never released on DVD, Frontier Circus nonetheless has a loyal following even 40 years after it was cancelled. How, Timeless Media Group and NBC bring you the complete series, restored and re-mastered for DVD. Set in the Southwest during the late 1800's, Frontier Circus was a cross between a circus drama and a traditional western. The T&T Circus, operated by Colonel Casey Thompson (Chill Wills), traveled from town to town in a wagon train, entertaining the recent arrivals with animal acts and typical circus extras. Of course, the West being the West, the circus often ran into trouble. Ben Travis (John Derek) was the straw boss who supervised the workmen, and Tony Gentry (Richard Jaeckel) was the advance man. Rounding out the regular cast was veteran character actor J. Pat O'Malley as hired hand Duffy.Along the way, many notable guest stars "ran away" to the circus, including Aldo Ray, Harry Carey, Jr., Brian Keith, Vera Miles, Rip Torn, Cloris Leachman, Claude Akins, Stella Stevens and a unique star turn by Sammy Davis, Jr. Although Frontier Circus ran for only one season, its place in the history of the television western is secure.

Whispering Smith - 25 Episodes - starring Audie Murphy Review

I took a bit of a chance in buying this set, firstly, as I don't remember anything of this television series when I was younger, and secondly, I hadn't bought anything from Timeless Media Group before, and the low price is usually indicative of the saying, "you get what you pay for." After viewing a few episodes of "Whispering Smith" I'm happy to say that I was not disappointed. The video quality is good, not excellent, but definitely more than just "watchable." There is a very slight jittery quality to the picture, and the contrast is on the bright/faded side, but overall it's a decent picture. The audio quality is somewhat muffled and I have to crank it up louder than usual but that is to be expected, as I am sure it's because Timeless Media Group has used older-generation prints. There wasn't any effort to remaster this series, which is unfortunate. Regardless, because of my satisfaction of this title I am considering buying other Western television reissues from Timeless Media Group, as these shows would otherwise probably never see the light of day on DVD.

Whispering Smith starring Audie Murphy - The Complete NBC TV Series! One of the rarest and most sought after of all television westerns, Whispering Smith featured Audie Murphy, America's most decorated soldier in WWII, as a Denver-based railroad private eye in the Old West. Many of the episodes were based on actual Denver police cases, and Smith has to use all his wits, as well as his skill with a Colt .45 to bring justice to those who would defraud the railroad. His superior was played by Sam Buffington, his partner by Guy Mitchell, and although it aired for only 20 episodes, the show had a great cast of guest stars, including Les Tremayne, Forrest Tucker, Marie Windsor, Alan Mowbray, Minerva Urecal, Alan Hale Jr. and Marjorie Reynolds.Bonus Feature: Medal of Honor: The Audie Murphy Story - The complete story of one of America's true heroes, Audie Murphy, who received the Medal of Honor for his bravery under fire in WWII, as well as 32 other medals including the Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Award.

Laredo - The Complete Series 1965-1967 - 12 DVD Set Review

Laredo - The Complete Series 1965-1967 - 12 DVD Set

This set collects in a nice slipcase the four half-season sets previously released by Timeless Media from October 2007 to January 2009. The 12 DVDs are exactly the same as the originals. The six individual slimline cases are exclusive to this set. Each holds two DVDs and has "The Complete Series" and disc numbers printed on the spine. The video quality of these DVDs is very good, probably the best of Timeless' western releases of the past few years. The color is bright overall and shows very little, if any, fading. I'm not sure if the shows were ever remastered but they looked pretty good on Encore Westerns in the mid-90s and these appear to be from the same source. The back of the slipcase states that the series is "faithfully reproduced from the original NBC masters". For whatever reason, the show looks good for 45 years old.
The first six discs, covering the first season, play the show's opening credits only as part of the menu. The second season's six DVDs all play the opening as part of each episode, which is the way it should be and the way the first DVDs should have been done. The sound quality on all is very good and in most instances comes blasting from my TV's speakers. It would have been nice to have more extras. The only extra here is a recent interview with co-star Peter Brown. It's interesting but covers most of his career and not just Laredo. I would have liked for the series pilot, at the very least, to be included in this set. The pilot was actually the final episode of the third season of The Virginian, titled "We've Lost A Train". Timeless has recently released the first two seasons of The Virginian, so maybe there's hope for the third season and the elusive Laredo pilot.
On the back of the slipcase is one misstatement and one glaring error. Claude Akins is stated as having joined the series in its second season, while Robert Wolders made several appearances. In fact, it was exactly the opposite. In the bottom right corner, we read: "Contains Exclusive Interview With Robert Fuller". Robert Fuller?? Robert Fuller's interview is on the Wagon Train Seventh Season Set. As I stated previously, the interview on Disc 10 here is with Peter Brown. Someone at Timeless did a poor job of proofreading.
If you're bothering to read this, you probably already know about the show. I will merely add that I've found it to be a nice blend of western action and comedy, with some occasional drama. The stars play well off each other. If you haven't seen it, think of the comic episodes of Bonanza mixed with the jocularity of Alias Smith and Jones, and including enough gunplay to please any western fan. Give it a try. You should find at least a few episodes to your liking.
Update: Timeless is releasing Season Three of The Virginian on DVD March 15. The final episode of that season, "We've Lost A Train", is the Laredo pilot.

LAREDO - THE COMPLETE SERIES! This box set brings you the complete series of Laredo on 12 DVDs, faithfully reproduced from the original NBC masters. So saddle up and join in the fun with the wackiest company of Texas Rangers ever to uphold the law.Laredo, with its blend of western comedy and high drama, is one of the best television westerns to be found. Laredo premiered in prime time as an episode of The Virginian and was such a big hit, with its wonderful cast, gorgeous color photography, western ambiance and tight, serio-comic scripts, that it was immediately signed for a full season.Laredo brings together three Texas Rangers with distinctive personalities, strengths and weaknesses, under the stern command of Captain Edward Parmalee (Philip Carey). Wacky Reese (Neville Brand), brawny Joe (William Smith) and smooth Chad (Peter Brown) are equally good at roughhouse humor as well as serious law keeping. Chad and Joe are particularly good with the ladies, something most westerns of the day shied away from. In Season 2, Claude Akins joins the cast as Cotton, a character similar to Brand's Reese, and Robert Wolders made several appearances as Ranger Erik Hunter. Quick in the saddle and quick on the draw, when these lawmen go after evil-doers, they always see justice done!

After posting this review last month, I have been reading the other reviews and have noticed that many are giving these DVD's one or two stars due to the releases of Gunsmoke being split seasons. That is nonsense! I would rather have split seasons of Gunsmoke on DVD rather then no seasons of Gunsmoke on DVD!. Yes, I would love to have them released as full seasons, but that is not going to happen and I'm fine with that since I know I and millons of other Gunsmoke fans are lucky enough to have Gunsmoke being released on DVD in the first place. Keep up the complaints and CBS/Paramount might just say enough and stop with the releases. Just accept them the way they are being released and enjoy them! (Oh and as for the reviewer saying that they messed up Season 2 vol. 1 and we are paying for the mess up, that is bull. I have that season along the with the rest of the sets that were released and Vol. 1 of season 2 as well as the other sets have no such problems. All episodes are all there and are in order!)
5-3-2009: I have just found out thanks to another reviewer, who pointed out what to look for, that there is a mess up on Season two, volume 1. One episode "How to cure a friend" was replaced with "How to kill a friend" I apologize for not seeing it in the first place and saying that there was no mistake. I still give Gunsmoke and each season volume set that has been released five stars despite this very small mess up and I still say that people should not give it a one or two star ratings due to it being split seasons and they should just stop complaining. All the season sets released are great to watch and I am looking foward to buying season 3 vol. 2 in about three weeks.

Gunsmoke - The Third Season, Vol. 1 (2008) Review

Gunsmoke - The Third Season, Vol. 1 (2008)
Average Reviews:

Gunsmoke - The Third Season, Volume 1 continues the release schedule for one of television's alltime greatest television series. Beloved and revered, this series will always be considered one of the alltime best. Yes, because of its' longevity, but also because of the great acting, directing, and writing displayed on the series.
But still, I cannot recommend these sets. There is no excuse, no justification the studio can make for splitting a 20-season series up and dividing each season into multiple sets. It's greed, shortsighted, fear of producing full season sets that won't sell - maybe one or more or all of these things. But the Western lover, loyal as we are to our favorite stars, our favorite movies and series, are being made to pay a price that is way too high to pay. To think how long it may be before the entire series is released is too painful. Suffice it to say that it will be WAY TOO LONG at the current rate.
At this point, it is probably too much to expect the studio to come to its senses. But it is worth it to say that they need to come to their senses, and soon.

Big Valley - Season 1 (1965) Review

Big Valley - Season 1 (1965)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There were few TV shows that made a greater impression on me growing up than did this classic western, The Big Valley, which ran on ABC from 1965-1969. From its stellar cast featuring the incomparable Barbara Stanwyck as Victoria Barkley, (the matriarch of a close-knit, proud and prominent family in 1878 California,) well-written/action-packed scripts, to stirring music, The Big Valley remains a standout in the barren plains of TV mediocrity.
The first TV drama to feature a powerful female lead (a woman the commercials proudly proclaimed had "backbone and bite"), it also dealt realistically with situations formerly taboo for TV. It began by revealing that Victoria's husband, Tom Barkley, a prominent, wealthy cattle rancher now deceased, had been involved in a secret affair leading to the birth of an illegitimate son. In addition to the ranch, the family controlled gold and silver mines, citrus groves as well as logging camps.
This five-disc (episodes on "A" and "B" sides) boxed set contains all 30 of the show's first season episodes, including its pilot. A few of these episodes were available years ago on poor quality VHS tapes, but this fantastic release represents the first time that the entire first season of the series has been available to the public in ANY format! As such, most of these episodes have not been seen uncut since the show aired more than 35 years ago.
The pilot, which introduces the powerful and proud Barkley family, depicts the conflict when the illegitimate son, Heath, abruptly arrives at the huge Barkley Ranch in the San Joaquin Valley, near Stockton, Calif., in the midst of a range war and claims his birthright.
After the recent death of his mother, Heath had learned his father's identify. None of the Barkleys had known of his existence, and it is later revealed that Victoria's husband had broken off the brief affair with Heath's mother and that she had never told him that she was pregnant. Victoria immediately accepts Heath and soon treats him as one of her own sons.
In addition to Miss Stanwyck (who performed many of her own stunts despite her age), the cast included Richard Long as eldest son, attorney Jarrod, Peter Breck as son and ranch foreman Nick, Lee Majors as Heath, Linda Evans as daughter Audra, and during its first season, Charles Briles as youngest son Eugene, a character who was dropped without explanation. Napoleon Whiting portrayed the family's servant, Silas, throughout the series.
First season episodes included in this set are: (Disc 1, Side A) Palms of Glory; Forty Rifles; Boots with My Father's Name; Young Marauders; (Disc 1, Side B) Odyssey of Jubal Tanner; Heritage; (Disc 2, Side A) Winner Lose All; My Son, My Son; Earthquake!; The Murdered Party; (Disc 2, Side B) The Way to Kill a Killer; Night of the Wolf; (Disc 3, Side A) The Guilt of Matt Bentell; The Brawlers; Judgment in Heaven; The Invaders; (Disc 3, Side B) By Fires Unseen; A Time to Kill; (Disc 4, Side A) Teacher of Outlaws; Under a Dark Star; Barbary Red; The Death Merchant; (Disc 4, Side B) The Fallen Hawk; Hazard; (Disc 5, Side A) Into the Widow's Web; By Force and Violence; The River Monarch; The Midas Man; and (Disc 5, Side B) Tunnel of Gold; and Last Train to the Fair.
As of this writing, the studio had not announced what, if any, special features would be included in the boxed set.
Just a few of the guest stars in this first season were Andrew Duggan, John Anderson (Richard Dean Anderson's father), Jeanne Cooper (Young and the Restless), Katharine Ross (The Graduate), Charles Bronson, Warren Oates, Martin Landau (Mission: Impossible!), Ron Howard, Anthony Zerbe, Claude Akins, Yvonne Craig (Batgirl), William Shatner (Star Trek), Bruce Dern (Laura Dern's father), Jill St. John, George Kennedy, and James Whitmore.
Here's hoping the remaining seasons of this award-wining series will be released ASAP! We can also only hope that this means other studios that own the rights to other worthy vintage westerns, like The High Chaparral, will get the message that there is an appreciative audience anxiously waiting and begin releasing these episodes on DVD complete season boxed sets.
