Thomas & Friends: Calling All Engines Review

Thomas and Friends: Calling All Engines
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of our most played DVDs, mainly because there are so many of my son’s favorite characters crammed into the story. Thomas fans will be able to identify many of the trains, both steam and diesel, including Thomas, Lady, Diesel 10, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, Harvey, Mavis, Diesel, Iron ‘Arry and Iron Bert, and more.
There are five catchy songs, including "Busy” which will have you humming all day, and for shorter attention spans there are short breaks in the action for cartoon challenges.
In this story, there is to be a new airport built on Sodor, which will bring in lots of visitors to the Island. Unfortunately, this also brings the Steam Engines into close contact with the Diesels, and before long the island is in chaos as train warfare breaks out. To compound matters, a storm hits the island, further delaying the work schedule.
With the vacation season plans headed for disaster, Thomas rallies the engines to work together and be really useful, but the real challenge will be to finish everything on time. A last minute emergency might put a damper on things, but maybe a little help from an unlikely source can save the day.
Entertaining and educational, this one is a must for any Thomas fan.Amanda Richards, March 1, 2006

We saw this movie in the theater (it is showing in July in various states). The screenplay was really well written and the movie was really well done. Pierce Brosnan is a superb narrator and does some really great engine voices; he is the best Thomas narrator yet. Even my husband enjoyed it, and he generally dislikes watching Thomas (I think it was partly the James Bond connection with Pierce, and partly how well the movie was done). The storyline: Thomas accidentally discovers an abandoned town on Sodor. A new engine (Stanley) is called in to do Thomas' work while Thomas supervises the restoration of the discovered town ...Stanley is a really nice, fun, hard-working engine and doesn't mean any ill will whatsoever towards Thomas....and Thomas ends up becoming very jealous of Stanley and how well he works and gets along with the other engines & characters (including Percy and Annie & Clarabel). By the end of the movie Stanley and Thomas become friends and both can see how the other engine must have felt. Great starting point for discussing jealousy and how to handle it with your preschooler.

Once again, the packaging has gotten me. I love Thomas and my son cannot live without him. We have tons of DVDs. The biggest problem of all: they do not issue DVDs in season groups, except for the very early ones with Ringo Starr. Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends - The Early Years (3-Disc Set)This means we have lots of repeats. This is a new package - 2008 - but very little is new. The problem is compounded by the lack of story listings on the cover.
Of course, once my son saw the cover, he HAD to have it.
So - while I have hardly ever seen a Thomas episode I didn't like, I really would love to be able to choose the episodes I buy; otherwise, I am suffering from confusion and delay! (Fortunately, no one was hurt.)

How cute this is! Thomas and all the other trains actually talking! My son was absolutely nuts, but here is a problem that I need to warn all of the parents. The Thomas & Friends DVD's have several stories which is what my son expected (he is 5 y.0.) This is just ONE story and the bonus story has nothing to do with Thomas, but a race car. My son had the biggest tantrum because he couldn't understand why was it only one story and the bonus story was about a car! So do not expect a bunch of little Thomas & Friends stories like the other DVD's. It's one story.

As a family, we have been watching Thomas shows since he was on Shining Time Station back in the 1980s. We have enjoyed listening to Ringo Starr, George Carlin, Alec Baldwin and Pierce Brosnan reading the stories and doing all the voices. However, nothing had prepared us for this one! On this DVD, the characters are all computer animated! It says nothing about it on the DVD package! I have heard people say they bought The Great Discovery or the theatrical movie because they heard that the trains' mouths move in those shows. THIS is the one you're looking for, folks! Our older children found it "weird", and I admit that it was a little disconcerting after all these years (and I still think Sir Topham Hatt doesn't look right), but our youngest son absolutely loves it, and that's all that matters!

My 5 year old grandson loves everything Thomas. I love them because they are great teaching tools for teaching valuable life lessons. Friendship, honesty, faithfulness, dependability, caring, sharing, and punctuality are taught in these stories and isn't that what we all need to get along better in life. These later edition Thomas DVD's are fully animated and that just makes them all the more appealling to children. Hope they keep up the wonderful work.

Thomas & Friends: High Speed Adventures Review

Thomas and Friends: High Speed Adventures
Average Reviews:

I think you just can't go wrong with Thomas & Friends. The programs always contain positive messages, they are wholesome in nature and yet still exciting enough for children to enjoy. There are always great lessons in that the characters make the same types of mistakes that everyone is prone to make. We see the consequences from being in a hurry or just plain fooling around, becoming jealous of others or lying to cover up mistakes.
These episodes feature the new CG animation, which means better facial expressions for the trains and townspeople. As always, the same great life lessons of discovery, friendship and cooperation are most certainly included.
In Thomas and the Billboard, Thomas becomes upset when he is inadvertently excluded from a photo taken of all the trains. Although it was a genuine mistake by the photographer, Thomas heatedly blames another train, which causes a whole new set of problems.
Steady Eddie refers to Edward, one of the older and most reliable trains. Because of his reputation, Steady Eddie is given the special job of delivering valuable cargo. He feels proud of his status and takes an alternate route where more people can admire him, instead of taking the directed path and gets himself into hot water.
Rosie's Carnival Special: Rosie is specially requested by Sir Topham Hatt to be one of two trains to transport the Carnival Special. Rosie is greedy and wants to do it alone, which causes an accident. She realizes that working together as a team can be very rewarding.
These are three of the six episodes on the disc. Also included are Mountain Marvel, Henry Gets it Wrong and Don't Go Back. Each one has its own valuable lesson which kids will benefit from, and plenty of action in the train yard they will enjoy.

"We" are watching this series as it comes on TV now and have seen all the episodes to date (not in order): high speed Acela, Ice cold produce train, Coal train, Amtrak sleeper train, steam train... did I miss any?
We have a train crazed 5 year old who makes us watch them over and over on our DVR until the next new episode runs and he then fixates on that one... We like the host Matt - I describe him as an adorable train geek - and as a parent I dont find him annoying like some video narrator/hosts can be (after you have to listen to the same video 100 times with you child) and the sound bites my 5 year old are picking up from him are more funny than anything ("full speed and full throttle" is one...)
The series is a good blend of info on the featured train and tangents into related subjects (how do you clean out a steam engines boiler? where do old freezer car box cars go to die and be recycled?...) If this video set was out now we would immeadiatley have bought it for Christmas (and to free up the space on our DVR) or told our childs uncles and such to get it for him for a present!

BEWARE, this does not come with George, but Lady. If you are like me, you look for the great deals where the DVD comes with the free toy. Thomas & Friends: James Learns a Lesson Review

Thomas and Friends: James Learns a Lesson
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now you can get the old Thomas & Friends episodes on DVD! This year they're making "James Learns a Lesson", and probably they'll make "Trust Thomas", "Thomas Gets Bumped", "Thomas, Percy & the Dragon", and others. This one ("James Learns a Lesson") was Volume 2 and was made in 1990. These are the episodes:
James Learns a Lesson - James is a splendid red engine who is new to the Island of Sodor, and Sir Topham Hatt has asked Edward to show him how to pull the express. When they get to the station, James accidently "weeshes" some steam and gets water all over Sir Topham Hatt's brand new top-hat. James wants to leave quickly, so Edward and James go. Later, Sir Topham Hatt scolds James and threatens to paint him Blue! Then he tells James to pull the express by himself, but Edward warnes James not to go too fast and not to bump the coaches beacause like freight cars, they will get back at you. James doesn't listen and goes too fast and bumps the coaches. The coaches get back and make him stop dead on the track! The driver and fireman find a hole in James' brakepipe, and the only way to mend it is with some newspapers and a leather bootlace. But where are they going to find a bootlace? They check all the passengers, until one man, (whose name is Jerimiah Jobling). He refuses to give the driver and fireman his bootlace, but the driver says that without the bootlace, the train will have to stay here forever! He gives them is bootlace, and James is on his way. But this is a sadder and wiser James and remembers to take care to never bump coaches again!
Foolish Freight Cars - Sir Topham Hatt scolds James for bumping the coaches and locks him away in the shed. The next day, Sir Topham Hatt comes to see James. He says that the railway is running slowly, so he gives James another chance. The job Sir Topham Hatt gives James is to pull a very heavy, long line of freight cars. James is determined not to let the freight cars cause trouble. So while on his way, he always has to stop so that the driver and fireman can make sure that the freight cars' brakes aren't on. When James comes to the hill, the tail of the line of freight cars comes down the hill. James makes it to the top of the hill, until the driver finds out that the tail has been left behind. Edward is at the bottom of the hill when James goes back for the freight cars. James manages to make it all the way up the hill. When he reaches the station at the bottom of the hill, standing there is- Sir Topham Hatt! He tells James he is proud of him and gives him a new coat of paint.
A Proud Day for James - The engines are making fun of James about the time he made a hole in his brakepipe (from "James Learns a Lesson"). When Gordon is to pull the express, he tells James that he has "enstinct" and knows just where to go. A few moments later, Gordon returns and says that a signal diverted him on a loop and sent him back to the station. Sience Gordon is late, Sir Topham Hatt tells James to pull the express and James is delighted! James pulls the express so well, and doesn't even make a hole in his brakepipe! When James returns from the station, he and Gordon decide to be friends, and Gordon won't make fun of James again.
Thomas & the Conductor - Now its Thomas' turn on this video. Thomas has is own branch line (given to him in "Thomas Saves the Day", from the "Thomas Gets Tricked" video), and has two coaches called Annie and Clarabel. One day, when he reaches the station, Henry is late, so when Thomas leaves, he forgets the Conductor! Annie and Clarabel try to tell Thomas that he left the conductor, but Thomas doesn't hear them. Until finally, he hears them and stops to see the conductor, running and panting. Thomas says sorry, and the conudctor hops onboard, and Thomas goes on his way.
Thomas Goes Fishing - Thomas loves to see the river, and really wishes to fish. But the other engines say that engines don't fish! But Thomas still wants to fish. When the water tower by the river is out of order, his driver decides to get some water from the river. But, unknown to them, there's a fish in the water! When Thomas goes on his way, he feels a pain in his tank and puffs smoke like he is sick. The driver stops the train, and Sir Topham Hatt and an Inspector come to inspect Thomas. When they look in Thomas' tank, they see a fish! Sir Topham Hatt, the Inspector, the Driver, and Fireman take turns fishing in Thomas' tank. They then have a lucnh of Fish and Chips (French Fries). Sir Topham Hatt then tells Thomas that engines don't fish, and Thomas agrees!
Terence the Tractor - It is fall on the Island of Sodor, and in a field a tractor is hard at work. One day, Thomas stops to see the tractor. The tractor introduces himself as Terence, but Thomas makes fun of his catipiller tracks. The next day, winter comes, and the snow is piling up on the track. Sir Topham Hatt tells Thomas to put on his snowplow. Thomas doesn't like the snowplow, so he shakes and bangs his snowplow and breaks it. The next day, Thomas is delighted not to have his snowplow. But while coming out of a tunnel, he gets stuck in a pile of snow! The driver and fireman try to dig him out, but it doesn't work. What are the passengers going to do? Then a bus comes and saves the passengers, and who to save Thomas? Terence the Tractor! He pulls Thomas out and Thomas says sorry for making fun of his catipiller tracks.
Thomas & Bertie's Great Race - One day, Thomas meets a bus (the same bus that rescued the passengers in "Terence the Tractor").
He introduces himself as Bertie, and says that roads are much faster than rails. Thomas says that rails are much faster than roads any day, so they decide to have a race. Their drivers agree, and off they go. But they face obsticals such as for Thomas: stations and old tracks, and for Bertie: railroad crossings and traffic lights. Thomas makes it to the last station first, and then Bertie arrives. The passengers cheer for Thomas, and cheer for Bertie. Sir Topham Hatt tells Thomas not to race at dangerous speeds, and the passengers don't like to be bounced around like peas in a frying pan, but he is still impressed at the race! Thomas and Bertie soon become friends.
So that is it! Extras on this disc include:
