(More customer reviews)This "FAMILY HOLIDAY COLLECTION" with 12 Holiday Movies (from 1935 - 1964), 49 Holiday TV Episodes (1950's and 60's) and 27 Christmas Cartoons (1940's - 1960's) is a very nice mix of seasonal Favorites of yesteryear. 8 DVD's and over 40 hours of Holiday entertainment!
NOTE: Most is in Black and White format, direct VHS transfers, ALL 4:3 aspect ratio (Standard) and some are grainy with some audio inferiority. But for the most part a very enjoyable and entertaining mix for the holiday's.
My favorites and suggested viewing for the movies: Beyond Tomorrow (1940) a very nice story about 3 old rich gentlemen who take in a young forlorn couple during the holidays (with a nice twist). The Miracle on 34th Street (1955 made for television) not as good as the 1947 version with Natalie Wood but still a fun story. And Scrooge (1935) a rare English version nice touch (a little grainy but a treat to experience).
My favorite Cartoons were The First Christmas, Howdy Doody Christmas, Jingle Bells, and Rudolph, the Red Nose Reindeer.
My favorite Tv episodes were many; All 5 of the "Ozzie and Harriet", Racquet Squad (the Christmas caper), Charles Dicken's The Christmas Carol with Vincent Price as the narrator, The RUGGLES (Christmas Eve 1952) and the A Child is Born. Also there is a BONUS virtual fireplace sequence too!! (very clear with crackling burning logs in COLOR)
Just sit back and enjoy some really memorable Christmas / Holiday fun!! I recommend this Collection for any family there something here for everyone!!!! Enjoy.

Call Me Claus (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)Whoopi Goldberg is an acquired taste, but to my mind she has never been funnier or had more affect than in this soon to be holiday classic. I don't see why, with a little luck, CALL ME CLAUS won't soon be regarded as the beloved Xmas perennial that is the happy fate of MIRACLE on 34TH STREET or SCROOGED. Or even A CHRISTMAS STORY or CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT or COME TO THE STABLE. Nigel Hawthorne, from the PBS MAPP AND LUCIA shows, and nominated for the Oscar for his part in THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III, outdoes every other part he ever had the privilege of playing and gives us the authentic Santa Claus for once and for all. You will laugh with recognition at Hawthorne' elfish grin and big red heart. Too bad he died so soon after making CALL ME CLAUS because as soon as this telefilm comes to an end, you're all primed for a sequel!
While Hawthorne is warm and tender, Goldberg is (at first) strident and severe, but soon liike Scrooge she melts right into the part of Lucy Cullins. Many of my friends credit the broadcast of this late 2001 film with helping them cure their depression and trauma over the events of 9-11-01, when it looked like for many the spirit of Christmas had been permanently extinguished, and then along came Whoopi and Sir Nigel, like two nutty Wise Men, to light the lamp of mirth and joy once again. Hosanna to entertainment for it goes a long way towards curing the ills of those sorry old world.

(More customer reviews)My family LOVES this movie! It's the first one we choose at the start of the Christmas season. I really don't understand the negative reviews. It's clean, funny, and in a beautiful setting. It's made for TV (abc family), which we like because there is more of a chance we can all watch together (parents in 40's, 10-yr-old son, and grandmother). I will admit, the DVD version is slightly different from the TV version (we liked the TV one better), but it didn't stop us from buying a copy. Give it a chance!

R.L. Stine's Mostly Ghostly Review

(More customer reviews)Mostly Ghostly is a great halloween movie. The acting is great and the storyline is even better. It is along the lines of goosebumps if you are familiar with that series. Here is a short version of the storyline...A brother (Nicky) and sister (Tara) come back to their old neighborhood just to find out that they are ghosts. They can't find their parents so they go to their old house in search of them only to find a new family lives there. One of the kids that lives at their old house (Max) can see and talk to the Tara and Nicky but Max is the only one. Tara and Nicky are scared because nothing is familiar to them now so they inlists Max's help to find their parents. A quest to find the parents lead the kids into a lot of different trouble...buy the movie to see what happens next.
There are a lot of familar faces in this movie including Madison Pettis (The gameplan), Kim Rhodes and Brian Stepanek (suite life of zack and cody), Ali Lohan (Lindsay's little sister), and Noah Cyrus (Miley's little sister). This is actually a great family halloween movie that the entire family will enjoy. If you are looking for a great family Halloween movie I suggest that you add Mostly Ghostly to your dvd collection.

Gumby: the Movie (1995) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this DVD as a little treat for my birthday. I was unsure about what the director's cut would do to this movie and, despite not seeing it for a while, I knew what was going to be in it.
For the most part, the Director's Cut was a an improvement over the original. Art Clokey and the editor that helped him knew what to cut and how to do it without calling attention to itself. There were a few cuts that felt abrupt and, knowing what was supposed to come next made it obvious for me what was cut. Also, a few continuity bloopers came about due to the cutting. However, these new bloopers are not more noticable than the bloopers that were present. Most importantly, this new cut gets rid of scenes that, quite frankely, just bogged the film down and were never needed. This film works without the cut scenes and is more enjoyable than the first cut, which I enjoyed very much as well. My only big complaint was that it cut out No Buckle's (the yellow Clayboy with white hair) first big scene and he doesn't get a line until the middle of the film. For the most part, however, this film rocked (and to be fair, most fans of Gumby are tuning in for Gumby, Goo, Pokey, and Prickle, not the new characters).
If you're reading this and sweating that you're favorite scenes were cut, never fear, because they are all included in a deleted scenes section. Between the movie and the deleted scenes section, the first cut is included on the DVD. There's an added treat, as a scene that was never a scene in the movie is included (it's a scene with Minga and Gumba, right before Gumby is seen cleaning the fire truck).
The greatest special feature are the four Gumby episodes. It includes one from the 50s and three 80s ones. They're were all enjoyable, and two of the 80s ones included Denali the mastadon and Tilly the Chicken. Very good episodes.
If you're a Gumby fan, you'll want this DVD. I absolutly love this movie and this DVD is a great tribute to Gumby. Buy it.
I almost forgot...it includes a little Gumby toy. How much better can it get? (That was rhetorical, don't answer that :) ).

Thomas & Friends: Calling All Engines Review

(More customer reviews)This is one of our most played DVDs, mainly because there are so many of my son’s favorite characters crammed into the story. Thomas fans will be able to identify many of the trains, both steam and diesel, including Thomas, Lady, Diesel 10, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, Harvey, Mavis, Diesel, Iron ‘Arry and Iron Bert, and more.
There are five catchy songs, including "Busy” which will have you humming all day, and for shorter attention spans there are short breaks in the action for cartoon challenges.
In this story, there is to be a new airport built on Sodor, which will bring in lots of visitors to the Island. Unfortunately, this also brings the Steam Engines into close contact with the Diesels, and before long the island is in chaos as train warfare breaks out. To compound matters, a storm hits the island, further delaying the work schedule.
With the vacation season plans headed for disaster, Thomas rallies the engines to work together and be really useful, but the real challenge will be to finish everything on time. A last minute emergency might put a damper on things, but maybe a little help from an unlikely source can save the day.
Entertaining and educational, this one is a must for any Thomas fan.Amanda Richards, March 1, 2006

(More customer reviews)My 19 month old daughter LOVES Maisy mouse. We have watched the Maisy TV show on Noggin, so I wasn't sure if I wanted to get a DVD, too. I'm so glad that I did! The Good Night Maisy DVD has 3 episodes: Maisy's Springtime (31 minutes), Maisy's Winter Fun (31 minutes), and Maisy's Bedtime (37 minutes). Each episode is broken into smaller 5 minute long segments that focus on a word or theme. (These are the same as what you would see on the TV show). Between the 5 minute segments are songs, with Maisy and her friends dancing, etc. The songs are NOT shown on the TV show, and my daughter loves them.
I do wish that the DVD had come with a guide, telling you which segments are on each episode. It's tricky to find them when your child wants to see a particular segment. After spending several frustrating minutes trying to find the segment where a cat has kittens, I decided to go through and write down what exactly was on each episode. To save some of you from similar frustration, the 5 minute segments in each episode are the following.
Maisy's Springtime: Eggs, Nest, Farm, Rabbit, Meow.
Maisy's Winter Christmas Tree, Christmas, Snow, Gingerbread, Cards.
Maisy's Bedtime: Bedtime, Bat, Camping, Bath, Picnic, Dog.

Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (Universal Backlot Series) (1944) Review

(More customer reviews)Back in the 1940s, Jon Hall and Maria Montez carved out their own little niche in cinema by teaming up for a handful of nifty fantasy and action adventure films (Arabian Nights (Universal Cinema Classics), WHITE SAVAGE, COBRA WOMAN, etc.), these under the Universal Pictures banner and featuring elements of sword, sand, and sandal. ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES, coming out in 1944, simply exudes this aroma of "remember when" and showcases Jon Hall at his most dashing and Maria Montez's lovely exotic looks. We just won't talk about her acting.
Interestingly, the film does away with the traditional magical trappings (excepting one enchanted phrase) and instead places this story in actual historical context, sometime in the 13th century. Driven back by the conquering Hugalu Khan's swarming Mongol hordes, the Caliph of Baghdad and his child Ali suffer the foulest of betrayals. The Caliph loses his life in an ambush, but the boy Ali slips away and goes into hiding. Stumbling in the desert, Ali meets and comes under the protection of forty far-ranging thieves. In the thieves' cavernous hideaway den, Ali Baba grows to young adulthood, at which time he sets out to overthrow Hugalu Khan and regain freedom for his people and also, in his spare moments, maybe win the heart of a beautiful princess (who, by the way, is bethrothed to the Khan).
There's a warm place in my heart for these spirited old-fashioned adventures on the big screen, stuff that I used to thrill to as a hyper kid on those lazy Sunday afternoons. In watching Hall and Montez's films the audience came to nurse a certain threshhold of expectation. The acting came and went, with Jon Hall mostly serviceable as the male lead, and I don't know that these two demonstrated that much of a spark together, despite the flowery dialogue ("Strange are the fortunes of war which placed a thief beside the Khan's beloved."). But, somehow, Universal kept pairing them up in these things, and it worked. ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES belongs to that era when rugged horse-riding thieves sang songs and no one made fun, and the rousing score rose to a crescendo every fifteen minutes or so. There were the colorful exotic costumes and the fancy stilted script and the promise of high adventure in far away places. The sword, the sand, the sandals. As a kid I loved the derring-do in the desert, the sword fight clashes, the daring rescue at the market place, and that old Trojan Horse trick. I hissed at the despicable villains and even had a soft touch for the corny romance, of which origins spooled back to Ali's early youth and the pledge he made to a young princess. Back when I saw this decades ago, even comedy relief Andy Devine seemed to blend in as Abdullah, one of Ali Baba's stalwart thieves, although, nowadays, it's a bit jarring, hearing Devine's distinctive catchy-croaky-drawly voice trying to do justice to lines like "Me, Abdullah? The Terror of Bagdad, nurse to a whimpering infant?" It's also kinda funny that Ali's henchmen tend to pronounce his name closer to "Ollie" than "Ali."
But, mostly, I look at this movie now, thru old decrepit eyeballs, and I brush aside the flaws. Mostly, I remember the fluttering crimson kafiyas and powder blue robes of the forty thieves and the ringing cries of "Open, oh sesame!" as they once more seek sanctuary inside that treasure-laden cave. Hall and Montez's movies never attained the heights of The Thief of Bagdad - Criterion Collection or The Adventures of Robin Hood (Two-Disc Special Edition), but neither were they meant to. New generations of viewers will look at ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES and may dismiss it as nothing more than a dusty old cinematic relic. For me, though, it's a savory cup of nostalgia and the memories it jolts back remind me of just how good I had it when I was a kid.

Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines - The Complete Series (1969) Review

(More customer reviews)This classic cartoon, commonly known as "Stop That Pigeon" among young viewers over the years, first debuted on September 13, 1969 on CBS and subsequently aired on and off in syndication over the years. I first saw the series growing up in the 80s.
The stars of the series are Dick Dastardly and his snickering canine sidekick Muttley (who always muttered his signature "rassuh-frazza-pazza). The duo was first introduced in 1968 as part of the ensemble cast of Wacky Races (which received a similar dvd treatment from Warner Bros. Home Video last year). Along with the rest of the Vulture Squadron (fellow dimwitted pilots Zilly and Klunk), they use WWI aircraft in an attempt to follow the orders of "The General." Those orders being: STOP THAT PIGEON!
The show is somewhat reminiscent of Road Runner, with the Vulture Squadron filling the Wile E. Coyote role. The outcome is similar too, with Dastardly and co. failing spectacularly in each episode to stop the pigeon.
Dastardly's voice, and that of The General, were done by Paul Winchell, whose other roles include Winnie the Pooh's friend Tigger, Zummi Gummi and Marmaduke. The legendary Don Messick (famous for his work as the voice of Scooby-Doo), did Muttley as well as the other members of The Vulture Squadron.
The half-hour show originally consisted of two Dastardly/Muttley adventures, a brief segment in which Muttley daydreamed about adventures of his own, and a few quick, unrelated gags. All 17 episodes are included in this set.

(More customer reviews)I saw it when it came on cartoonetwork at first before it came on I thought it was going to be like the first one.But I was wrong it was way better than the first one if you ever watch the TV show and liked it then your enjoy this movie.Every thing about the show was just like in the movie Kevin was cool and funny ,Gwen powers was the same wich was cool but Ben did the best job in the movie and his aliens where way better then the first movie.I think they should make another one I just have one more thing to say just give it a chance dont judge a book buy its cover but the cover is cool to thanks.

My Little Pony: Twinkle Wish Adventure (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my 3 and 5 year old, who love MLP and have seen all of the recent movies. I have to say I am unhappy with the revamping of this favorite. This movie does not have the same quality as the rpevious movies! Along with a new too cutesie look these ponies are also sporting new (and not so great) attitudes. Instead of the adorable, sweet, caring, and loving friends that we know and love these ponies show jealousy, greed, envy, they fight, stick their tongues out at each other, sneak around to cover up a mistake, and lie. The redemption and moral that you might expect never really comes as they quickly wrap it up by tossing out a few quick and not heartfelt apologies. I was hugely upset with this movie and will probably get rid of it as soon as possible. I'll stick with our favorite loveable ponies!

Dora the Explorer - Rhymes and Riddles (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)My 2 year old daughter is a huge Dora fan, and she loves this DVD. The 4 episodes are very good, and include Dora had a little lamb, which is very entertaining, and deals with many of the nursery rhymes our kids see at preschool and look at in books.
The menu selection on the DVD is easy, though I wish there was a way to have the episodes repeat or go back to back with one another- when my Mom babysits, she has trouble turning the DVD on, so easier is always better.
The DVD also contains some interesting features, like games which I think will be good for my daughter when she gets a little older.

(More customer reviews)I absolutely LOVED this movie! Jean is soo cute too! they had a good plot, it was very funny, and the ending really summed everyhting up. This is a great teenager movie and even adults will get a kick out of it. My parents did. The only thing I would like to know if anybody knows where to get the soundtrack to this movie. I know that there was talk about it coming out but I cant find it. But anyway, I totally recommend this movie to kids and adults 11-12 and up.

(More customer reviews)The 30th Anniversary Edition of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was originally botched as a fullscreen-only effort. However, Warner listened to the people and gave them a wonderful widescreen transfer.
Colors are vibrant, the 5.1 Dolby Digital track is very nice, and there are a handful of cool extras. There is the 30-minute documentary "Pure Imagination" which shows some of the cast today, including all the children and Gene Wilder himself. The interviews of the cast looking back at the movie which was the defining thing for so many of them is very interesting. The documentary on the whole is rather fulfilling. While one feels that the documentary could have delved deeper and maybe been an hour-long, at a brisk 30 minutes, the pacing seems okay and it won't leave you wanting too much more. There is a limited amount of archival on-set "B" roll footage, but all that is there is interesting.
Also included is the original theatrical trailer (Warner left off the 25th Anniversary trailer that was on the original DVD release from 1997), a 4-minute featurette on the production design, and a feature-length audio commentary from the children, who have now grown up. The other features - "character bios" and sing-alongs - are pretty much fluff features. Since this was one of my most anticipated DVD releases of the year, I can't help but feel Warner could have done more in the way of extra features - games, outtakes, deleted scenes, etc. Nevertheless, the overall content of this DVD is satisfying enough.
As one of the greatest films of all time, and certainly one of the most enjoyable musicals and most enjoyable films of the 1970s, "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" has a timeless feel to it. This DVD deserves a place in every collection.
If you like the movie, then know better than to be the fullframe edition, which was released earlier. Widescreen in the original ratio is the only way to go. Especially in a few years from now, when we all have 16 x 9 widescreen TVs, and that "fullframe" version leaves you with big bars on the side of the TV. See the movie the way it was made and meant to be seen - in widescreen. And when you do get that 16 x 9 television, guess what - the widescreen DVD will fill your screen!
A classic movie with classic peformances, and a wonderful amount of heart. What are you waiting for -- get the widescreen 30th Anniversary Edition DVD of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory so you can enter a world of pure imagination today!

(More customer reviews)I thought this movie was good although I agree that Kimberly was missed. I too was disappointed.. But the new girl (Sara) did alright--> big shoes to fill don't you think? As far as Debbie goes she could get as much screen time as she wants.. She obviously did not want anymore than what she had. Remember she is really up in age now.. I know I am 50.. I have watched her movies since I was a little girl.. I very much missed her too in this movie.. I was more disappointed that "Sophie" did not a part in this but I was glad "Dillon" did.. All in all I liked it.. I hope to see more of Halloweentown with Young Sophie...??

The ten episodes included in this retrospective were handpicked by the fans themselves as the cream of the crop. Episodes include "Angelica Orders Out," "The First Cut," "Reptar On Ice," "No Bones About It," "Be My Valentine," "Chuckie vs. The Potty," "Doctor Susie," "Vacation Special," "Finsterella," and "Bigger Than Life." Plus, you get bonuses. I loved these episodes so gave this 4 stars. I would have liked to see a Seasons box sets though instead of all these greatest episodes DVD's.

(More customer reviews)This set is wonderful but, a few things have changed since this set was first announced. it was to be a 2 disc set and the 2 films were to be the colorized versions. What this set has is just 1 DVD and so both movies are on 1 disc and in black and white. The back of the DVD case shows the colorized photos which makes you think the films are the color versions. The menus also show colorized photos. The VHS versions which are in color looked very good but for some reason Universal decided to not include them.
The real prize of this DVD is the extra, which is Shirley's very first movie and which has NEVER before been available on VHS or DVD or 16MM or any other format. "THE RUNT PAGE".Shirley is not shown much at all during the 10 minutes this film runs. She is shown right after the opening credits and then again during the last 3 minutes. She is very adorable here and, for this first film short, she is wearing only shorts, she would be covered up more in her next 7 berlesk film shorts.
In this film short, she is aware of the camera and theres a few times where she is looking at it. She is so very adorable in her scenes and its amazing that at this time she was 3 years old!
You will really enjoy this film short as well as the 2 movies which are in super quality!
