These four TV series are valuable in treating interesting phenomena of World War II that are less frequently covered on video. Each episode is in stereo, 4:3 format, and vintage B&W (mostly) and vintage color, with modern embellishments (maps, background info, etc.) in color. The quality of the archival footage is variable of course, but all is watchable. The quality of the modern color supplements is very good to excellent (e.g., Bletchley Park). Narration is by actor Robert Powell (born 1944).

During the chaos and destruction of WWII, ordinary men and women from all walks of life were thrown into fearsome, real-life situations worthy of any Hollywood movie -- the only difference is that this series every story is true. Ordinary GIs and US Air Force and Navy personnel suddenly found themselves flying against the Japanese in China, jungle fighting in Burma and being dropped by submarine on enemy coasts at midnight. Each fifty-two minute story gives the viewer a clear view of the historical context, the strategic objective, and the tactical effort made by flyers, sailors and foot-soldiers - often in the most oppressive and life threatening situations - to win victory from the enemy.

(More customer reviews)After a TWO YEAR delay between the first season and second season DVD releases, it's nice to see Paramount finally placing "Laverne and Shirley" on the DVD fast track! I hope that the rest of the seasons are also released as quickly as the second, third and fourth! Still, it's a shame regarding the music changes and lack of extras!

Cops - Shots Fired (1989) Review

(More customer reviews)I saw almost all of these episodes on TV. You dont even see the shots being fired you hear them. They count tazing someone as shots fired. It is not graphic at all. The only good part to this DVD is the bonus section. Its about 10 to 15 minutes long and its how the entire DVD should have been done. I am training to be a police officer so I like this DVD just because of some training value it can give. If you watch COPS a lot you won't really like this DVD.

Laverne & Shirley - The Third Season (1976) Review

(More customer reviews)Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley were in many ways a sitcom "team effort". If you liked one, you probably liked the other too. I've always felt that Laverne and Shirley started out GREAT, right from the very first episode, while Happy Days had a rather lack-luster first season. It's true that the characters in Happy Days may have been more realistic and varied, but what truly drives Laverne and Shirley is the chemistry between the two actresses (Williams and Marshall) and their nitwit friends, Lenny and Squiggy (Landers and McKean)
Thankfully, we don't have to choose between the two series and can enjoy them both. But if I absolutely HAD to choose, something tells me that I wouldn't be able to resist the wacky charms of Cindy Williams and Penny Marshall. The girls really managed to create an atmosphere of TOTAL FUN, even when the plots or writing could have been a little stronger.
Here's a brief break-down of episodes, for those who might be looking for a favorite.
