(More customer reviews)Based on the very popular and successful TV series, "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie" is one entertaining thrill ride that really shows how effective anime can really be when it is done correctly. It's hard to think of a cartoon being so action-packed and involving, but this movie does a splendid job of doing just that. You're plunged right into the nail-biting action that will have you glued to your seat until it is well over.
The movie revolves around a bunch of outlaw bounty hunters. In Mars, there's a suspected terrorist running around with a virus that could very well wipe out the existence of human beings. Spike and company decide to take the case, as there is a large reward that will be given to the person or persons who catches the madman. The only trouble is that Spike and the gang have stumbled onto something that is much more than a simple bounty and end up discovering a big conspiracy that will throw their lives into ultimate danger. The action and excitement never ends until the shocking finale.
I watched the movie TWICE in one day. Right after I had seen it for the first time, I had to immediately watch it again. You know a movie is powerful when it has that kind of effect on you. Very rarely do I run into movies that make me want to watch it again right then and there. When you're watching "Cowboy Bebop," you really don't view it as an animated feature, but as a real living and breathing film. It is done that well. And, the great thing about this movie is that you do not have to have seen the show before. I watched this without seeing any of the shows and was able to follow it without any problems. Of course, chances are that you will want to watch the series after viewing the movie. The story is well thought out and appropriately structured. There isn't a single dull moment in the entire movie.
A little warning; although this is an animated feature, the movie is rated R. While it is certainly more mild than most anime, the movie does contain violence and language. I don't think this is anything for very young children, but I don't see a reason why older teens shouldn't be able to enjoy it.
The DVD has some nifty features to offer. First off, the picture quality is GORGEOUS. Even though it is an animated movie, the picture quality is fantastic and it really shows if you have great home theater system. The sound is also very good. Extras included are featurettes, music videos, storyboard comparisons, trailers and more. You can also watch it in the original Japanese audio track or the dubbed English one. I have to say, they do a great job of dubbing it in English. If you're not a fan of subtitles, then check it out in English. Overall, a very cool DVD package.
If you're looking for a wild and exciting trip filled with humor and thrills, "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie" is just for you. Again, you do not have to have seen the actual TV series to understand the characters or the story. The movie does a fine job of standing on its own. This is truly a great movie that shows you just how exciting anime can be. Definitely a favorite. -Michael Crane

Mission Hill - The Complete Series (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)This series was truly brilliant, cut short by the WB. Ironically, the WB continues to show mediocre shows while canceling ones such as this. It makes you wonder who the WB's target audience is.
The series was ahead of its time ... on the wrong network, unfortunately. Were it a new series now, it might have been pitched to Comedy Central or Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) and survived not only to _finish_ the first season but for subsequent seasons as well.
The episodes have a slightly higher replay value than most series', a lot of the humor and in fact, some of the best humor is very subtle - such as the No Smoking sign in Jim's office. Moreover, the question everyone always asks is finally answered in the commentary, I am referring of course to the reason all of the characters appear to have Jaundice and yellow teeth. ;)
For ~$20, the two-disc set is well worth it - it would make a great stocking stuffer for anyone with a Kevin or Andy character in his or her own life. :)

Sealab 2021 - Season 1 (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)If you stay awake long enough to catch Adult Swim on Cartoon Network Sunday nights (starts around 10:30 p.m. CST, my old time zone- now I'm on the east coast, and everything starts an hour later), check out "Sealab 2021". It's a spoof off the old 1972 cartoon "Sealab 2020", except that the original '72 crew has been replaced by a bunch of lunatics who probably shouldn't be allowed out of doors. Perhaps that's why they've been confined to an underwater lab where they can't hurt anybody (well, almost anybody). We loyal fans have long awaited Adult Swim gems to come on DVD, and with "Sealab 2021", you get the following eppys:
*I, ROBOT- News of a monkey whose brain has been implanted in a robot prompts the crew to have a long-winded "discussion" about the fate of their own brains.
*HAPPYCAKE- Captain Murphy is devestated to find his beloved Happy Cake Oven is missing, and orders the crew, along with a Jacques Cousteau-like narrator, to search the waters for it. Meanwhile, a giant squid endangers the life of the crew; or as the narrator sees it, "uses it's tentacles to cradle me like a Mother's arms".
*RADIO FREE SEALAB- Captain Murphy is bored and decides to use the lab's emergency radio beacon for a pirate radio station, starring as "Howling Mad" Murphy.
*CHICKMATE- Debbie questions the male crewmembers to see who will make the best Father for the baby she wants immediately, and Stormy almost learns a valuable lesson in race relations.
*LOST IN TIME- Bizarre episode in which Stormy and Dr. Quinn are mysteriously transported 15 minutes back in time to save Sealab from an explosion- even though the same explosion happens again, starting the vicious cycle all over again.
*PREDATOR- There's an invisible yet shimmery ghoul aboard Sealab that has the crew cowering in the corners. It's up to Dr. Quinn (with Dolphin Boy as bait) to capture the fiend.
*LITTLE ORPHAN ANGRY- Griffin, a terminally ill orphan, comes aboard Sealab to live out his dream. But Griffin's heart is not as pure as everyone thinks. Meanwhile, Capt. Murphy morphs into a germ-a-phobe freak as he fears a Bubonic Plague outbreak.
*WAKING QUINN- The eppy is a bit hard to follow- Stormy wants to show Dr. Quinn his new hairdryer while Quinn is in the water- yes, Dr. Quinn is electrocuted and bizarre happenings are afoot.
*ALL THAT JAZZ- In one of the funniest episodes, Capt. Murphy gets trapped underneath the BeBop Cola machine. Unfortunately for him, everyone else is at a concert. A year transpires before he is found, and in that time he loses all his teeth and becomes addicted to scorpion venom.
*MURPHY MURPH AND THE FENG SHUI BUNCH- This is my all-time fave eppy. Capt. Muprhy is dissatisfied with the disharmoy of the Sealab decor. He hires an extortionate Feng Shui "master" to redecorate everything- but "Master Loo" is a con artist who convinces the crew to buy his crap oragami and persuades Murphy to spend $50,000 on a solid gold toilet. Ofcourse, only Dr. Quinn sees through him.
*IN THE CLOSET- Capt. Murphy gets everyone stlocked in a closet, and tempers begin to flare.
*STIMUTACS- The ver witty Sparks has come up with a new drug that everyone wants,but the side effects are grotesque- and additctive.
*SWIMMING IN OBLIVION- A compliation of past episodes dominates this season finaale, including the informercials for the "Debbie Gone Wild!" DVD's.
Some of Sealab's best episodes were in it's first season, and thankfully they're all here.

Also, this series was (it seems to me, anyway) meant for adults, not kids. That's why it's on ADULT Swim. This is a great series which Hot Topic hasn't killed yet.

Robot Chicken, Season 1 (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)The topics and humor in this show come fast and in a highly random manner, which may not appeal to everyone, but if you like the old 1-minute "blackout" type of sketches done years ago on many variety shows, then Robot Chicken will appeal to you. If a gag misses the mark for you it will be over fast and the next one will be rolling by moments later, a gag that may be very different and a lot funnier to you. There's something for everyone, as pop-culture, politics and more are skewered using action figures and other models in a rapid parade of stop-motion comedy sketches. My personal favorites are those that use action figures from some popular cartoon, comic book or movie, placing them in character in situations where they are forced to deal with everyday frustrations and problems. It's bust-a-gutt funny when you see Lex Luthor and Skeletor stuck in traffic, Transformers suffering from severe chronic illnesses, and more. There's also a hilarious bit where a stop-motion Mark Hamill (who voices himself) walks off the set of Star Wars after Darth Vader spouts a string of the most improbable explanations of how things work in Star Wars mythology. Many other actors and well-known personalities provide guest voices on the show, often poking fun at themselves or work they have done in the past.
Robot Chicken Vol. 1 is funny enough to warrant repeated viewing and I'm looking forward both to buying this DVD set and to seeing the second season of the show which begins in April 2006.

Robot Chicken - Season Two (Uncensored) (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)The second season of Robot Chicken, created by geek-god Seth Green, continues the stop motion, action figure starring insanity that made the groundbreaking first season of the show so entertaining. If you enjoyed the first season of the show, you should know what to expect here: skits ranging from Star Wars to classic TV shows and cartoons, to politically charged moments, celebrity-aimed knocks, to just plain blink and you miss it insanity. However, there are some misses to this season, including a segment starring both Corey Haim and Corey Feldman as themselves, which is almost painful to watch. The good however, greatly outweighs the bad, as we see a crazed Ted Turner (not voiced by himself) masquerade around as Captain Planet, Barney the purple dinosaur looking for love, Castro playing "Dance, Dance, Revolution", a fantastic Highlander spoof starring the current day teen queens, and plenty, plenty more to boot. Also like the first season of the show, there is a horde of voice talent to be found with the second season of Robot Chicken, including Green, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Scarlet Johansson, Charlize Theron, Paul Rudd, David Hasselhoff, Seth MacFarlane, Christian Slater, Phyllis Diller, Breckin Meyer, Miguel Ferrer, Dana "Master Shake" Snyder, Dan Milano, Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, Michelle Trachtenberg, Ginnifer Goodwin, Macaulay Culkin, Bruce Campbell, Peter Gallagher, Emma Caulfield, Melanie Griffith, Gene Simmons, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Weird Al, Kelly Hu, Roddy Piper, and Hulk Hogan. There's a great selection of special features to be found on this two disc set, and yes, like it says on the cover, season two of Robot Chicken is uncensored, and even funnier than you may think it would be without the bleeps. All in all, even for casual Adult Swim viewers, season two of Robot Chicken is a must own.

Squidbillies, Vol. 1 (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)From one of the creative minds behind Adult Swim's smash Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Squidbillies pushes the limits for offensiveness compared to some of the other shows on the Adult Swim lineup, and in some cases, even goes over it. It's all good however, considering that Squidbillies is mostly pure comic glee. The show revolves around an ex-con, hillbilly, talking squid named Early, who is re-united with his illegitamite son in backwoods redneck country. In between the series of mis-adventures that the two embark on, they deal with crack-pot family members, and a sheriff that has his share of problems. There's plenty of gross out gags and cliche' hillbilly behavior, and for the most part it's all frequently hilarious throughout. The animation style may not be everyone's cup of tea to be sure, but it suits the environment and the setting. As said before, Squidbillies is definitely not for everyone, but it keeps on supplying the laughs, and in that department alone, is worth checking out.

Robot Chicken: Season Three (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)My husband and I love Robot Chicken. The first time he saw the show he laughed so hard our neighbors in the next apartment woke up and started banging on the wall. Our only gripe with this third season is that it is uncensored. I never would have thought this was a problem, as it is an adult show, but dropping the F-bomb more times in a 15 minutes show than most R-rated films do makes the show less funny. It makes it seem like it's trying too hard. It's excessive and distracting. It was way funnier when all of the swear words were beeps. All of the nudity is also uncensored. This mostly consists of Barbie boobs which aren't erotic in the least. It was funnier when they were blurred out because it made it seem like it was something inappropriate, instead of a child's plaything.
Some people might think we are just prudes that are offended by the language, but if that were the case, we wouldn't watch the show at all. My point is Robot Chicken was funnier when they didn't need so much uncensored language. The show can carry itself without it.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Vol. 7 Review

-They have switched to a one disc format which means
-less total episodes
-slightly slimmer special features
-Less deluxe of packaging
-they changed the order of some of the episodes (rabbot redux should have logically followed "the last one forever and ever") and they removed the christmas special from the lineup even though it came out before "rabbot redux"Overall though, the inclusion of a sequel to Terror Phone adds alot to the special features. The special features are still really good this time around even though they seem a bit slimmer. They packed ALOT of stuff onto one disc.

Robot Chicken: Season Four Review

(More customer reviews)The fourth season of Robot Chicken finds Seth Green and co. changing things up a bit...okay, that's a flat-out lie, but be glad that it is because Robot Chicken is still as demented and hilarious as it always has been in its fourth season. Included in the chaos to be found here for this season are the revelation that Tila Tequila is really a cyborg, PaRappa the Rapper (anyone else remember him?) finds himself in court, a woman wanting her husband to role play being Jack Sparrow gets more than she bargained for, another Terminator comes back in time in a very different form, the spirits from Raiders of the Lost Ark try to get Indy to open his eyes, Jazz is still alive at the end of Transformers, Stephen King and Dean Koontz have a face off, and there's a fantastic Yellow Submarine spoof as well. There's also the usual skits involving G.I. Joe, Batman, Iron Man, and more besides; and there's so much perverse comedy to be found that it's just hard not to love Robot Chicken for all that it is. There's another slew of voice talent to be found in the fourth season as well, including Seth MacFarlane, Battlestar Galactica head honcho Ronald D. Moore, Joss Whedon, Katee Sackhoff, Breckin Meyer, Milo Ventimiglia, Tila Tequila, Sebastian Bach, Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, Zac Efron, Ron Perlman, Donald Faison, Joey Fatone, Amy Smart, Billy Dee Williams, Christian Slater, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lee Majors, Jon Favreau, Hulk Hogan, Mark Hamil, Stuart Townsend, Nathan Fillion, Triple H, Jean-Claude Van Damme, David Hasselhoff, Neil Patrick Harris, Simon Pegg, Rachel Leigh Cook, Sandra Oh, and James Marsden among others. All in all, four seasons in and Robot Chicken is still one of the best things to ever grace Adult Swim's lineup, and here's hoping that Seth Green's brainchild never, ever goes off into the sunset.

Family Guy, Vol. 6 Review

(More customer reviews)Definitely the highlights of this volume are the incredible Stewie Kills Lois/Lois Kills Stewie episodes. I remember watching "Stewie Kills Lois" when it first aired and I was blown away (well not as blown away as Lois) and I couldn't wait for the conclusion after the courtroom cliffhanger. They were the debut of the season seven, right? (I can't keep track of which season is which on Family Guy anymore). Did you ever wonder what would happen if the Griffins actually knew Stewie's evil intentions? Well, you'll find out in these episodes without future episodes being jeopardized. Yes, things will return to "normal," but, as Stewie says, he hopes you'll enjoy the ride. I found it funny (and a little odd) that "Stewie Kills Lois" re-aired on Mother's Day. I have the Target special edition of this volume which includes a cool mini poster featuring those episodes. This volume also includes the last we'll see (I guess) of Brian's short lived romance with Jillian. I wish that were not the case because she was hilarious! Anyway, here is what you get with Volume Six:
Disc 1:
"No Meals On Wheels"--The Griffins open up a restaurant. To boost the low turnout, Joe offers to make "Big Pete's House of Munch" the new hangout for his buddies...but not his cop buddies. That "Cripple Tron" was pretty stupid.
"Boys Do Cry"--Lois tries out for the new church organist (highlight: Herbert plays and sings "I Know What Boys Like") and when she gets the job, she forces her family to go to church. When Stewie spits up the communion wine, he's believed to be possessed by the devil, so the Griffins flee to a more tolerant part of the country...Texas. This was a good one until Gilbert Gottfried ended it on a stupid note.
"No Chris Left Behind"--Chris is expelled from James Woods High School for being the dumbest student. He ends up at his grandfather Pewterschmidt's alma mater Morningwood Academy, but is hazed for being poor. Highlight: Stewie as King Friday. Oh, and am I the only one who hates that fighting chicken?
"It Takes a Village Idiot, and I Married One"--While vacationing at Quagmire's cabin, the Griffins swim in a toxic lake. After an Amadeus parody (they sure grew back their hair fast), Lois is outraged when Mayor West tells her he is allowing oil companies to dump waste in the lake. Lois decides to run against him, but will she be just as susceptible to corruption?
"Meet The Quagmires"--In this "Back to the Future" parody, Peter gets death to let him go back in time to 1984 so he can have fun during his bachelor years. When he turns down Lois for a date, he finds he has changed the future. Peter is now married to Molly Ringwald and Lois is Mrs. Glenn Quagmire! Highlight: Peter keeps going back in time to fix his mistake and keeps making the same mistake (he makes Homer Simpson seem like a genius).
Disc 2:
"Movin' Out (Brian's Song)"--Brian tries to prove he's serious about Jillian by moving in with her. Meanwhile, Meg gets a job at a convenience store, but when she gets Chris a job, she ends up fired while Chris and the boss talk movies all day. I didn't like the ending because I liked Jillian as Brian's airheaded girlfriend.
"Believe It Or Not, Joe's Walking On Air"--Ha! They got the title from "The Greatest American Hero." Highlights: Fred Flintstone confesses something shocking about Betty to Barney Rubble, Dr. Hartman and Mr. Pewterschmidt's voice comparison, frogs on vacation in Ethiopia. Out of guilt for holding Bonnie back, Joe undergoes an experimental procedure to get his legs back, but ends up walking out on his friends and family (get it? "walking out").
"Stewie Kills Lois"--Now for the highlight episodes of the season. Lois and Peter go on a cruise without Stewie. Stewie is so mad he threatens ruthless revenge, but Brian doesn't believe he really means it so he dares him to really go through with it. Stewie: "I did it! I killed her! She's dead! Ha, Ha, Ha!... [falls]... Ow! Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!...Oh yeah, that's right." The cliffhanger to this episode is awesome!
"Lois Kills Stewie"--Stewie looks like he has finally taken over the world, but there is one last hurdle: the final showdown with Lois. I don't remember seeing the "Never Will Be Missed" musical number during the TV airing.
"Padre De Familia"--After a Veteran's Day parade, Peter becomes a rabid American patriot who goes on a campaign against all illegal aliens...until his mother gives him some shocking news.
"Peter's Daughter"--After Meg almost dies in a flash flood, Peter becomes overprotective, especially when she wants to date a young, handsome doctor (why he would want to date Meg is never explained). Meanwhile, Stewie and Brian fix up an old house.
Disc 3:
"McStroke"--Peter joins the mustache lifestyle, which includes stepping in as a volunteer fireman and saving a man from a burning McBurgertown. Given a lifetime of free burgers, Peter eats so much he suffers a stroke and decides to sue the restaurant. His case is aided by a talking cow he finds in "Dacow." Special Features--OK, one episode on a DVD seems like a gyp, but there are a lot of extras on this disc. They include, and are not limited to, "Family Guy 100th Episode Special," "I'm Huge (and the babes go wild)" music video, "Family Guy Live-Just For Laughs," and my favorite part of the bonus features: "Deleted Scenes" of which there are lots.

Family Guy, Vol. 4 (Season 4 Part 2) (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)First off, what is with the selection screens? I have to adjust my television just to read the options! Anyway, several episodes here are up to the high standards of previous Family Guy seasons. My favorites are "PTV," "The Fat Guy Strangler," "Father, Son, and the Holy Fonz," and "You May Now Kiss..." (Jasper is funny). Others, however, I found to be mediocre or just plain bad ("Patriot Games"). There are not as many episodes I want to see over and over as there are on volumes 1-3, but this season is still good enough for 4 stars. There are a lot of extras on disc 3, too. 44 deleted scenes and you can select all and have them play one after the other (some of these jokes are better than the ones that got left in the shows). The featurettes are very interesting where many of the directors and artists are interviewed on what all is entailed in putting a show together. Also, these episodes are uncensored (there is an F-Bomb dropped or two) but there is a censored option (isn't it usually the other way around?). Anyway, here are the episodes:
Disc 1
"PTV": A wardrobe malfunction involving David Hyde Pierce at the Emmys causes the FCC to censor all tv--"The `bleep' Van `bleep' Show, Starring `bleep' Van `bleep.' So Peter starts his own network featuring such highbrow programs as "The Side-Boob Hour" and "Dogs Humping."
"Brian Goes Back to College": The New Yorker magazine is interested in Brian as a contributor but requires a college degree. Brian had dropped out of Brown University. It's strange to think of an animated dog in this way, but I'd always thought Brian was so cool and together. Hearing him lament about how he never finishes anything put a new spin on his character.
"The Courtship of Stewie's Father": Chris works for that disgusting old man who likes young boys while Stewie and Peter bond over something they both enjoy immensely: terrorizing Lois. This episode almost makes one sympathize with that old pediaphile (well, almost).
"The Fat Guy Strangler": My favorite of this volume. Lois finds out she has a brother who went crazy after seeing their mother having relations with Jackie Gleason (hence his hatred of fat men). Meanwhile, Peter makes the shocking discovery that he is fat and starts the NAAFP.
"The Father, the Son and the Holy Fonz": Peter's father baptizes Stewie with tainted holy water and he has to be quarantined in a plastic bubble. Meanwhile, Peter starts the church of the Fonz--"Please rise.....Now sit on it."
Disc 2:
"Brian Sings and Swings": A near-death experience causes Brian to feel he must live for the moment so he hooks up with Frank Sinatra Jr. as part of the New Rat Pack. A funnier side story is Meg pretending to be a lesbian to be accepted into a club.
"Patriot Games": This has to be the most stupidest Family Guy ever. Peter meets Tom Brady and joins the New England Patriots (along side Diet Pepsi machine?) but is transferred to a London team for showboating. Meanwhile, Brian fails to pay a debt and Stewie gives him a beat-down mob-style.
"I Take Thee Quagmire": Quagmire gets married and soon realizes it was a mistake. Meanwhile, Lois is weaning Stewie but he finds he is addicted to breast milk.
"Sibling Rivalry": Peter donates to a sperm bank and Stewie's rival baby is born (remember "Emission Impossible"?). Meanwhile, Peter stops having relations with Lois after his vasectomy and Lois gets fat. I like that part. Another highlight: Chris's shoebox diarrhea of the evolution of man.
"Deep Throats": After getting what he deemed to be an excessively high parking ticket, Brian wants to find dirt on Mayor West and sees him dating his young intern: Meg.
Disc 3
"Peterotica": First off, that Quagmire stuff in the beginning is very annoying. Anyway, Peter writes erotic novels and uses Lois's father's name as the publishing company. When someone gets into a car accident listening to Peter's book on tape (read by Betty White), Mr. Pewterschmidt loses everything and must move in with the Griffins.
"You May Now Kiss the...Uh...Guy Who Receives": (You get it? Hahaha). Brian's gay cousin Jasper plans on marrying his partner but Brian first must fight Mayor Wests' ban on gay marriage.
"Petergeist": Peter digs in the yard and finds an Indian skull and weird things start to happen. Part of the plot is similar to that Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors where a 3D Homer is stuck in another dimension.
"The Griffin Family History": The Griffins are stuck in a panic room while their house is being robbed so Peter tells them stories of his ancestors Nate the slave, Willie "Black-Eyed" Griffin the silent comedy star, and Peter H*tler who was the brother of...yeah.

(More customer reviews)Hands down the best show featuring land dwelling cephalopods ever made. One thing the show has going for it is a total disregard for continuity. It's fun seeing characters mutilated or killed repeatedly. Also, it is a show about hillbilly squids. They live in Northern Georgia and are protected by the Endangered Species Act so they're free to raise hell. In addition to the squids other regular characters include a Sheriff and an evil capitalist named Dan Halen that looks like a....I don't know. He has no knees and looks like half a ball sac. He talks like Orson Welles and is immortal and then there is Krystal. And well, come to think of it, you got a bunch of great characters including the Reverend (another bizarre creation) and the Devil and Jesus too --both as you've never seen them before. Anyway, I've seen hillbilly shows and hillbillies in person and the same with squids and putting the two together to make one creature makes perfect sense. The animation is superb. Crude and decadent as it should be. One aspect of the show that I love is the narration featured on some episodes. Cracks me up like an Easter egg. Just the tone of it. The second volume is even better than the first one. Do it to it.

Family Guy, Vol. 2 (Season 3) (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)It is an unfortunate fact that in the politically correct age we live in that edgy comedy is categorized as offensive when it is really just being silly. That is exactly what happened to "Family Guy" a series that laid siege to every one of our sacred cows (religion, sex, violence, race relations, etc.), but did so in such a matter of fact manner, I find it hard to believe that anyone could have taken issue with it. Nonetheless, the series is no more; fortunately, we have the DVD compilations featuring every episode in its uncut hilariousness.
Season Three comprises twenty-one episodes, one of which was never aired on television. Actually, "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" exemplifies my point about political correctness, as its silly, even complimentary view of Judaism could offend only the most supremely sensitive person. But enough with the negative, as there are some genuinely hilarious episodes on these discs. Moreover, since Fox aired them somewhat sporadically during the final season, it's likely there are one or two episodes that will be new to the viewer. For example, I had never seen "A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas" or "Road to Europe" both of which feature some of the best parody in the set. Other highlights include "A Fish Out of Water" which features a spectacularly fat Peter, "To Love and Die in Dixie" which is the best "Family Guy" tribute to a TV series with its "Dukes of Hazard" inspired storyline, and "Family Guy Viewer Mail #1" which features three shorts that abandon all pretense of a basis in reality and produce some the best sight gags ever seen during the show's run.
That said, anyone who buys this set probably already knows how funny this show is, but what makes this collection really impressive is the quality of the extras. First off is the packaging itself which features an episode guide on the back of each case, which makes it easy to find that specific episode you're looking for. Or, if you've got more time, the ability to play every episode on the disc consecutively is a great feature. In addition, the commentary which is available on five of the episodes ranges from informative to hysterical. However, the true highlights are to be found on Disc 3, which contains animatics (pencil drawings) of several deleted scenes, complete with dialogue. These are nice not only because they contain new material, but also because they offer some insight into how the episodes evolved into their finished form. Next are two short documentaries, which offer a funny, interesting look into the series' development, the voice talent, how the characters evolved, and ultimately, why the show didn't last. Finally, there is the "Family Guy" pilot that was pitched to the network; again it's interesting to see how these relatively crudely drawn (but well voiced) characters evolved into the show that become such a cult hit.
Ultimately, if you are a big fan of the show, you need this collection, and nothing I say here is going to make you more likely to buy it. However, if you're sitting on the fence, I can't emphasize enough what a great show "Family Guy" is. It is literally funnier than anything on TV today, and over time, I expect it will be even more broadly appreciated for its comic genius. If you want to laugh until it hurts, and aren't offended by humor on the edge, this is definitely a show for you. Finally, I would just like to point out that Seth MacFarlane alludes to a line written for Stewie in an episode that never aired, so let's all hope that there may be yet more to come!

Superjail: Season One Review

Clearly it's not for younger viewers as it was developed for the AdultSwim programming block on Cartoon Network.
As I mentioned before this is not a review of the Show, but of AdiultSwim's DVD product.
While the show is great in and of itself, this DVD is not.
Once again Adultswim is releasing a DVD with an "UNCENSORED" sticker on the package (Like they did with the Metyalocalypse DVDs) when this content is still COMPLETELY CENSORED as it was on the original Cablecasts and "air dates".
This is ridiculous.
I bought this DVD to see this amazing show without the silly BLACK BARS over images and without loud BEEPS over language.
Instead only the animatics, -the auxiliary extra content- is free of censor beeps etc.
I hope Adultswim smartens up and eventually releases these shows uncut, uncensored as they are currently advertising -falsely.
I doubt I'll be buying more Adultswim DVDs outside of the Venture Bros. releases (which actually are UNCENSORED as advertised)
I received this DVD in the mail on Thursday, and I just sold it this morning.
I'm waiting for the real uncensored version if it ever comes out.
