The Spartans Review

(More customer reviews)An engaging documentary artfully assembled, this 2003 British production has been a hit for PBS in the United States, with the videos and tie-in book (the US edition of Paul Cartledge's The Spartans) often on backorder status. It is a rarity in that it gives Sparta its due for helping Greece resist the Persian threat and credits Sparta for its more enlightened attitude toward women. Although at times it may project a faint pro-Athens bias, host Bettany Hughes is a sympathetic and knowledgeable narrator. THE SPARTANS boasts terrific location photography by Douglas Hartington, with some impressive aerial shots of the Taygetus gorges. For the first time in a television documentary, we are treated to detailed examination of many artifacts in the Sparta Museum as well as shown many photos of archaeological excavations at Sparta. The atmospheric soundtrack is composed by Anthony Burke. Evocative reenactor footage is used - not as much as in the A&E production "Rise & fall of the Spartans," maybe, but effectively presented, even if the footage tends to be come repetitive by Part 3.
Part 1
THE SPARTANS opens at Thermopylae and with the epitaph of the Three Hundred -- and very stirring it is to hear this spoken in the original Greek -- before introducing some of the topics that will be addressed in the program. (Hmm. The claim that "male homosexuality was compulsory" is extremely dubious; the first boldfaced assertion as fact of a subject hotly debated among ancient and modern experts.) After the introduction, we journey to the Dark Ages of Greece, the end of the Achaean Age and the coming of the Dorian Greeks to the Peloponnesus and Laconia. An effective look at the development of hoplite warfare is presented. Next comes the Messenian conquest, then the establishment of the Spartan constitution. The upbringing of Spartan youths, warts and all, is then addressed at length. A good point is made that the sublimation of the individual as practiced by the Spartans can be very liberating - "the possibility of transcending your limitations as an individual and becoming part of something bigger and better." Spartan institutions are credited for initiating a system of political rights and responsibilities among its citizens centuries before other Greek states conceived of such things.
The finding of the so-called statue of Leonidas in 1925 is used to introduce the Persian Wars, which are then examined in detail. There is much footage of Thermopylae, including the eponymous hot springs, and the commentary casts the Spartans' self-sacrifice in terms that hearken to the Japanese samurai's bushido code.
Part 2
This segment begins by exploring at how Sparta and Athens fell out after the Persian Wars, with a look at Athenian politics and society and how these contrasted to Sparta's. This is a refreshingly non-partisan treatment, not hesitating to be equally critical of Athens. Women's life in Sparta is given much attention. Sparta comes off as considerably more enlightened, by modern Western standards, than Athens. (Interesting sidebar - in her remarks during a November 24, 2003, online chat with Channel 4 (UK) viewers, narrator Bettany Hughes, when asked where she'd have rather lived, Sparta or Athens, replied "Sparta. No doubt.") Hughes wryly notes how Spartan women were "objects of fear and fascination" to non-Spartan men. The legacy of these "radical" Spartan customs on later societies is discussed. Amusingly, whether by design or not, Hughes wears a scarlet dress for much of this sequence - fit garb for a Spartanette - and conducts her narration while striding purposefully about the Laconian countryside or riding on horseback in full exhibition of energetic Spartan vitality.
Lastly, the Laconian earthquake of 465 or 464 BC and subsequent helot revolt is noted and seen as the event that lit the sparks of conflict between Greece's two leading cities. The opening clashes of the Peloponnesian War and the Spartan disaster at Sphacteria ends Part 2.
Part 3
The last section of the film opens at Delphi and takes a look at Greek religion and Spartan attitudes toward the gods and oracles before resuming the history of the Peloponnesian War. Alcibiades, the Syracuse expedition, and Lysander are all examined, taking up half of Part 3. Then the period of the Spartan Hegemony is briefly described, shaped by the "crippled kingship" of Agesilaus and marked by power struggles among Sparta's ruling factions. Hughes notes the critical decline of Spartan citizen manpower and the rise of Thebes as a rival. She takes us to the battlefield of Leuctra, where Spartan military superiority was broken in 371 BC. The remaining sequences very quickly sketch how classical Sparta became a second-class power and finally a tourist attraction for wealthy Romans. The show concludes with a summation of Sparta's influence on Western philosophy.
THE SPARTANS is a standout documentary, wonderfully photographed and directed, and is highly recommended as a visual overview of Spartan history.

With happenings like Chandler spending Thanksgiving in a box, Phoebe becoming a surrogate mother for her half-brother, Ross getting married and saying Rachel's name instead of Emily's and of course, Monica and Chandler hooking up, the fourth season of Friends contains some of the show's best moments, which makes it a must have for any Friends fan.
1. "The One With the Jellyfish"- In Montauk, Ross dumps bald Bonnie after kissing Rachel, who gave him an 18-page letter that he fell asleep reading. Chandler pees on Monica's jellyfish sting.
2. "The One With the Cat"- Phoebe finds a stray cat and she thinks that it's the reincarnation of her mother. Joey gets locked in his entertainment center that he is trying to sell, while the potential buyer robs the apartment.
3. "The One With the Cuffs"- Chandler and Joey furnish their looted apartment with a canoe and some patio furniture. Rachel's boss, Joanna, who is seeing Chandler, leaves him pantless and handcuffed in her office.
4. "The One With the Ballroom Dancing"- Treeger, the building's superintendent, threatens to evict the girls unless Joey can teach him to dance.
5. "The One With Joey's New Girlfriend"- Ross and Rachel attempt to make each other jealous with their new significant others. It turns out that Ross's new squeeze just wants him as a babysitter and Rachel's beau is an immature thief. Phoebe discovers her sexy phlegm voice while she has a cold.
6. "The One With the Dirty Girl"- Ross dates Cheryl (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos), a paleontology doctoral candidate, who happens to be very sloppy. Chandler buys Kathy a copy of "The Velveteen Rabbit" as a birthday gift.
7. "The One Where Chandler Crosses the Line"- Kathy becomes aware of Chandler's feelings for her and lets him know that she feels the same way by making out with him.
8. "The One With Chandler in a Box"- It's Thanksgiving and as a punishment for Chandler for kissing Kathy, Joey makes him stay in a box. Monica injures her eye, goes to the ophthalmologist and the doctor turns out to be Richard's son.
9. "The One Where They Are Going to Party"- Monica's scathing review of a local restaurant gets her hired as a chef. Mike "Gandalf" Ganderson ("only, like, the funniest guy in the world" according to Ross) is coming to town. Joanna is killed by a cab.
10. "The One With the Girl From Poughkeepsie"- Monica is sick and tired of the staff at the restaurant treating her so badly, so she decides to hire Joey just to fire him in front of the crew to show them how tough she can be.
11. "The One With Phoebe's Uterus"- Frank Jr. and Alice ask Phoebe if she'll be a surrogate mother for them. Ross gets Joey a job as a tour guide for the museum.
12. "The One With the Embryos"- It is Rachel and Monica vs. Chandler and Joey in a game to find out who knows who the best ("He's a transponster!"). If the girls win, the guys have to get rid of their chick and duck. But if the guys win, they get the big, purple apartment. Phoebe undergoes implantation of Alice's embryos and later finds out that she is pregnant.
13. "The One With Rachel's Crush"- Kathy's sexy appearance in a play has got Chandler worried about her faithfulness. Rachel tries desperately and clumsily to get the attention of Joshua, a newly divorced client.
14. "The One With Joey's Dirty Day"- Rachel asks Ross to take out Mr. Waltham's niece from England, Emily. Monica and Phoebe try to help Chandler get over his breakup with Kathy by taking him to a strip club. Charlton Heston guest stars.
15. "The One With All the Rugby"- Trying to impress Emily's rugby playing friends, Ross takes up the sport.
16. "The One With the Fake Party"- When pregnant vegetarian Phoebe is tortured by her cravings for meat, Joey offers to trade dietary preferences with her. Rachel is determined to invite Joshua to an unplanned bon voyage party for Emily.
17. "The One With the Free Porn"- Joey and Chandler come upon an unscrambled porn channel and decide not to turn off the TV, in case that would make them lose it. Phoebe finds out that she's having triplets.
18. "The One With Rachel's New Dress"- Ross gets nervous when Emily hits it off with Susan (his ex-wife's lesbian lover).
19. "The One With All the Haste"- Rachel is irked by the singing neighbor across the alley and the battle to re-swap the apartments is on. Ross asks Emily to marry him.
20. "The One With All the Wedding Dresses"- Rachel blurts out an impromptu proposal to Joshua, which scares him off. Monica and Phoebe hang out in wedding dresses.
21. "The One With All the Invitations"- Writing out invitations to his wedding causes Ross to have flashbacks about his relationship with Rachel.
22. "The One With the Worst Best Man Ever"- Phoebe's horrible mood swings have Rachel and Monica walking on eggshells. Joey doesn't know what happened to Emily's missing wedding ring.
23. "The One With Ross's Wedding"- The gang, sans a pregnant Phoebe and a heartbroken Rachel, head to England for Ross and Emily's wedding. But Rachel decides to fly to London herself and tell Ross that she loves him. She ends up losing her nerve to tell him when she gets there, but, of course, he ends up saying her name during the ceremony.

Personally, I consider this to be Friends' best season for two reasons. The first one being the great episodes showcasing the beginning of Ross and Rachel's relationship ("The One Where Ross Finds Out," "The One With the List," "The One With the Prom Video" and "The One Where Ross and Rachel...You Know") and secondly, the hilarious Chandler and Joey moments during the time when Joey's moving out ("The One Where Joey Moves Out," "The One Where Eddie Moves In" and "The One Where Dr. Ramoray Dies"). This is a must have for any Friends fan!
Just so you know what episodes you'll be getting in this collection, here's a complete list:
1. "The One With Ross' New Girlfriend"- Rachel is mad when Ross brings home his new girlfriend, Julie. Phoebe chops off Monica's hair.
2. "The One With the Breast Milk"- When Rachel discovers that Monica has been spending a lot of time with Julie, she's jealous. Ross is shocked when Phoebe tastes Carol's breast milk before she gives it to baby Ben.
3. "The One Where Heckles Dies"- The cranky upstairs neighbor, Mr. Heckles dies and leaves Monica and Rachel his belongings in his apartment.
4. "The One With Phoebe's Husband"- The gang finds out about Phoebe's secret- she married her gay Canadian friend so he could get a green card. Rachel tries to keep Ross and Julie apart.
5. "The One With Five Steaks, An Eggplant"- Monica gets fired for accepting free steaks from the meat vendor at work.
6. "The One With the Baby on the Bus"- Joey and Chandler babysit Ben for the day, only to leave him on the city bus.
7. "The One Where Ross Finds Out"- Rachel leaves a drunken message on Ross' answering machine saying she's over him, which confuses Ross because he didn't know she knew about his feelings for her.
8. "The One With the List"- Ross makes a pros and cons list about Rachel and Julie, hoping it will help him decide which girl to be with. Wouldn't you know Rachel finds the list?
9. "The One With Phoebe's Dad"- Phoebe learns that all of the stuff she's been told about her father isn't true, so she asks Chandler and Joey to help her find him.
10. "The One With Russ"- Rachel's the only one that doesn't realize her boyfriend, Russ (David Schwimmer under a wig and makeup), looks just like Ross.
11. "The One With the Lesbian Wedding"- Ross' ex-wife, Carol and her partner, Susan decide to get married. Phoebe thinks she's possessed by an 82-year-old lady who died on her massage table.
12. "The One After the Super Bowl" Joey dates a crazed fan of his who thinks he's really Dr. Drake Ramoray, the character he plays on Days of Our Lives. The gang visits Marcel on the set of his movie.
13. "The One With the Prom Video"- Monica's parents bring her a box of her stuff from when she was in high school, which includes a tape of Monica and Rachel getting ready for the prom. Joey gets Chandler a best bud bracelet that he hates.
14. "The One Where Ross and Rachel...You Know"- Monica falls for Dr. Richard Burke (Tom Selleck). Ross and Rachel go on their first date.
15. "The One Where Joey Moves Out"- Joey moves out of the apartment he shares with Chandler after a co-star on Days of Our Lives offers him a bigger and better place.
16. "The One Where Eddie Moves In"- Monica's going crazy since Ross is spending so much time over at her apartment now that he's dating Rachel. Chandler gets a new roommate.
17. "The One Where Dr. Ramoray Dies"- Joey tells Soap Opera Digest that he writes his own lines on Days of Our Lives, which is a lie, so the writers kill off his character. Chandler discovers Eddie's psycho side.
18. "The One Where Eddie Won't Go"- Joey deals with being unemployed and he finally moves back in with Chandler.
19. "The One Where Old Yeller Dies"- Phoebe decides to watch all of the sad movies her mom shielded her from when she was a kid. Rachel freaks out when Ross tells her his plans for their future.
20. "The One With the Bullies"- Monica gets a job at a 1950s theme diner. Two mean guys won't give up the sofa they're sitting on at Central Perk to Chandler and Ross.

22. "The One With the Chicken Pox"- Phoebe's Navy officer boyfriend returns, but her plans for a romantic time are dashed when they both get chicken pox.

Mission Hill - The Complete Series (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)This series was truly brilliant, cut short by the WB. Ironically, the WB continues to show mediocre shows while canceling ones such as this. It makes you wonder who the WB's target audience is.
The series was ahead of its time ... on the wrong network, unfortunately. Were it a new series now, it might have been pitched to Comedy Central or Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) and survived not only to _finish_ the first season but for subsequent seasons as well.
The episodes have a slightly higher replay value than most series', a lot of the humor and in fact, some of the best humor is very subtle - such as the No Smoking sign in Jim's office. Moreover, the question everyone always asks is finally answered in the commentary, I am referring of course to the reason all of the characters appear to have Jaundice and yellow teeth. ;)
For ~$20, the two-disc set is well worth it - it would make a great stocking stuffer for anyone with a Kevin or Andy character in his or her own life. :)

Beverly Hills, 90210 - The Third Season (1990) Review

(More customer reviews)Ok, I don't want to be negative about this show...or a traitor to my generation... I love Bev Hills 90210! I was a sophmore in high school when they were, at the shows start, and we were the same age and we grew up together. I watched (and taped) every episode for the whole 10 years... but those VHS tapes wear out, so imagine my joy when the DVD set came out... or not...
As I said, I have taped every episode, and I watch it now on Soapnet... and as you know like watching your favorite movie over and over, you can "talk along with the movie"... well I am that way with this show. I now know (but didn't until after having bought the first 2 seasons) that the box says in fine print on the back of the box that "MUSIC HAS BEEN CHANGED FOR THIS HOME ENTERTAINMENT VERSION. SOME EPISODES MAY BE EDITED FROM THEIR ORIGINAL NETWORK VERSIONS.", but come on!!! I noticed a wierd edit in another season episode and a spot here and there, not to mention in season one when all the girls have a slumber party and are signing along to "Mony Mony" but now the music is different... but The Senior Prom episode was seriously butchered! There were major parts gone... not to mention Cathy Dennis sang 2 songs at the prom and they cut the whole second song out, along with shots of her and most of the actors lines that were said during that song. I am very disappointed in this. The prom episode was a great one, not to mention a pivital part of the season. Part of the greatness of 90210 was the fact that they used new, up to date music for every episode.
Come on FOX... how cheap are you? We are all paying $40 or more for a set that probably costs $5 to make... You couldn't shell out some cash to keep this amazingly cool show intact in it's original condition??? And what are you going to do in future seasons??? There were tons of episodes later on in the Peach Pit After Dark where a famous music group plays there... are those hour long episodes going to be edited down to a half hour show?
So, before you start sending me hate email, let me say this:
My review comes to this = Yes, I love the show and Yes, I have and probably will buy every season on DVD. But Yes, I am disappointed in the editing. So to all of you die hard fans like me... be aware of this before you buy and watch it, so you aren't completly disappointed like I was when I first bought and watched them. Maybe they will get this figured out and stop their "editing" or "ruining" our favorite show!!!

Hawaii Five-O - The Complete Second Season (1968) Review

In the case of Hawaii Five-O, it easy to dismiss it as a typically television crime drama that got lucky by finding its audience and keeping it. The same could be said for Law and Order. Except, in television years, luck usually runs out after two or three years. Gimmicks get old, the formula is figured out, and sharks are jumped so often they don't even complain.
But shows that last five years, much less 12, have to have something besides luck, gimmicks, and great scheduling. Hawaii Five-O had a number of things going for it. First of all, let's be honest. The setting was, and still is so lush and exotic that it is easily intoxicating. Hawaii is beautiful, and most people either live there or want to live there. Filming on location has always been a blessing when it's been done, and probably no more so than on this series.
Next, Jack Lord, playing Five-O chief Steve McGarrett, was one of a long line of no-nonsense law enforcement figures. The strength, integrity, and dedication of these kinds of characters cannot be overstated, and these characters will always have lots of fans rooting them on, not unlike Law and Order's Jack McCoy.
Finally, watching shows like this is always a treat because you see so many stars that were either big stars enjoying a working Hawaiian vacation, or lots of up and coming stars before they got their big break. Hawaii Five-O was a natural draw for both categories, and it's fun to watch them and remember when.
It's also fun to remember when you could look forward to hearing one of the best and most recognizable theme songs in television history. Not a small thing when you add it with the other factors. Hawaii Five-O had a lot going for it then, and it has a lot going for it now.

I Dream of Jeannie - The Complete First Season (Black & White) (1965) Review

(More customer reviews)A few years ago I started watching IDOJ for the first time since I was a kid on cable TV reruns. As an adult, I was able to perceive many things that simply went over my head as a child. This was actually quite an edgy show by mid 1960's standards. Oh how I wished this show would be released on DVD, and lo and behold it my wish was granted!
(And, I bought the B&W version because I prize historical accuracy. I want to see exactly what was shown on TV back then, without the lousy TV's we had back then.)
You've got a blond bombshell, who is eager to please in every way a man could imagine, living out of wedlock with an astronaut, who represented the most heroic all-american roll models we had back in the 1960's. And somehow, for years, this show provided good clean TV fun for millions of viewers.
Part of why it worked I suppose is that Jeannie really wanted to marry Tony, and slowly but surely she broke down his resolve not to marry her until toward the end of the series, when they actually do get married. The meta-narrative of the show is that
Jeannie got her wish. (Oh yeah, and she slept in her bottle until she did!)
Is IDOJ really a "knockoff" of Bewitched? Yes and no. I rather think of IDOJ as an improvement.
For example, the last scene in the pilot has Tony walking into his bedroom and closing the door, Jeannie turning to smoke and entering his bedroom under the door, Tony yelling "Knock it off!!" or something like that, and Jeannie coming back out from under the door and reappearing with a wink to the camera. It's all left to the imagination what happened in there and it's funny!
And that's where IDOJ is very different from Bewitched. In IDOJ, the hottie with the supernatural powers gets to be sexual, whereas in Bewitched she does not.
In Bewitched, Samantha is the sane one with a world of lunacy around her in which she tries to maintain order and survive the crisis of the week. She is usually uptight and in crisis mode and after a while I just start to wonder what she ever saw in Darrin in the first place. Also, this formula gets repetitve. I doubt that I'll ever order the Bewitched series for that very reason: it's much the same story every week.
In IDOJ, Tony is the sane one in a world of lunatics, and Jeannie is often part of the chaos. Jeannie gets to be beautiful, sexual, smart, mischevious, and most importantly, unpredictable. Will she be part of the problem or the solution this week? Or, will she try to be part of the solution and instead bring on more chaos? You really don't know whats coming.
Also, I really appreciate the work that went into some of the props and stunts that often only provided a gag lasting a few seconds. In particular when Jeannie makes herself small and has to hide in items like coffee cups, pencil holders, and things like that. Those kind of scenes take a lot of work to set up. There's some genuine special effects work in this series beyond just objects dissappearing and reappearing.
Oh, and one more thing. The DVDs are single sided!! I can actually look at them and see what disc I'm holding! I can handle them without going into "brain surgeon" mode in order to avoid damaging them! They actually did the packaging correctly! WOW!
So, here you've got a properly packaged example of the best that 1960's sitcoms had to offer, and for under $30. Stop wishing and start buying!
Postscript: My one dissappointment with this DVD set is the commentary on the pilot episode. I expected great things since the commentators would be the main three actors in the cast, but it's like they didn't understand the purpose of a commentary or didn't prepare. Don't expect a lot of additional insights into the series. I tried to watch this with my wife and got so embarrassed for them that we turned it off and just watched the pilot episode without the commentary.

We couldn't wait for Season Two to start on HBO and I admit,we were a little disappointed in a few of the episodes. However, after the season ended, I watched all the episodes several times again on HBO "On Demand" in April and was shocked at how fabulous some of the episodes that I thought I didn't like were. I ended up LOVING Season Two. My favorite episode is still Unnatural Love where Jermaine dates the Australian girl...Too Many [...] on the Dance Floor and Carol Brown are great, creative, funny songs! The Cup and the Tough Bretts are other great episodes. Have fun! You'll enjoy good intellectual humor with any of the Conchords Seasons DVD's. I can't wait to get mine!

(More customer reviews)Australia has given us some excellent character actors: script-ripping stagemen who can become larger than life caricatures. Think Crocodile Dundee, or -- better yet -- Dame Edna.
But Chris Lilley has come along and surpassed them all. Indeed, his versatility and roaringly off-putting humour surpasses any of the dark humour in 'Little Britain' or other such countrywide satires.
Now we in North America can enjoy 'Summer Heights High', one of the truly wicked and funny send-ups of a secondary school mini-universe, its cliques, turf wars, and teachers (who are barely more mature than the students).
'Summer Heights High' deserves proper sequential viewing -- one cannot simply dive into a later episode and acquire the plot. Lilley's immense talent for character-forming deserves close attention and patience as he lays down, through improvisation, innuendo, and sheer brilliance for skit acting, three distinct narratives (which amazingly never cross paths) in a suburban Australian school. Details of these three personas which he takes on can be found widely, so I won't repeat the background stories here. I just want to state that Lilley's ability to assume different characters is positively uncanny. I mean, uncanny. Take an excellent method actor and combine it with a razor mouthed pirrahna of improv and quick-thinking, and you get a sense of just how kooky and unpredictable Lilley is.
For my money, it surpasses the muti-headed hydra pranks of Cohen (of 'Borat' fame). Because Lilley can deliver sinister and scathing satire on racism, drugs, and just about every other taboo -- but just when you wonder if he's a nihilist, out comes a breathtaking moment of magnificent spirit and heart. The final scenes involving Jonah Takalua are simply headshakingly good, without any hint of that 'very special moment' that usually mars most dramas supposedly about teens.
Chris Lilley, you're brilliant, mate.

It has some catchy little songs that you will find yourself singing throught the day...even if you don't want to. This video shares fun recipes that your daughter will want to make with you more than likely because it's Strawberry's and the insert has 2 printed out recipes. This movie isn't all about cooking. It has a story where Apple Dumplin has a dream that she is Strawberry's age and Strawberry and all of her friend become the babies and she has to "take care" of them. My neice really enjoyed that story and she was really excited that all of Strawberry's friends were back for this movie since they were no where to be found in the Berry Fairy Tales! Your little one will be pleased with this movie.

This season, we discover that Julia's baby is Sean's, and that it has Ectrodactyly (lobster claw syndrome). Surgeries include Sean doing a procedure on a Treacher/Collins syndrome patient (severe facial deformity), Dawn Budge is "earjacked" (her ear sliced off by an earring thief) a burn reconstruction on Escobar (he's back!), and a breast reconstruction on a woman (Escobar's wife) who's had her breasts brutally cut off.
Guest stars include Brooke shields as Faith Wolper (Christian's therapist), Larry Hagman and Sanaa Lathan as Burt and Michelle Landau, Peter Dinklage as Marlowe Sawyer, Rosie O'Donnell as Dawn Budge, Jacqueline Bisset as James LeBeau, Alanis Morissette as Poppy (Liz's girlfriend), plus the stellar, fantastic, and sexy Catherine Deneuve as Diana Lubey.
Some of the plotlines this season include Liz (the fantastic Roma Maffia) getting a kidney stolen (a la urban legend), the dog and the peanut butter, Matt joins Scientology, Sean has an affair with a potential nanny, Christian gets involved with Michelle, James (a woman) LeBeau has a dangerous hold over Michelle - running an organ theft ring, Christian battles with his own sexuality after his therapist hints that he might be gay, Liz's remaining kidney fails and she has to go on dialysis, Kimber seduces Matt to revenge Christian, Julia sleeps with Marlowe, Merrill Bobbitt returns, Wilber (Christian's "son") returns.
My favorite is the return of Escobar (Robert LaSardo). Escobar is so bad he's good, and he makes for a few great episodes. This time he's not just masking as Sean's conscience, he's really back.
The soundtrack is again fantastic (pick up the CD of the soundtrack to Season One), using music to complement the scenes, such as playing Don McLean's 'Starry Starry Night' (a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh) during the ear replacement surgery.
The season finale was fantastic, with major resolutions and some very big questions left for Season Five. The fault with this season is that once again there wasn't enough surgery scenes. Unlike Season's One and Two which focused on more surgeries, Season's Three and Four focus more on the daily lives of Sean and Christian, and have more personal trauma in them than surgery trauma. I'd like to see them go back to the old formula of more surgery issues. Since Troy/McNamara has made some major changes this year, I'm wondering how many more of the interesting pro-bono reconstructive cases we'll be seeing in the future. Overall, Season Four is as good as Season Three but still doesn't measure up to One and Two. Enjoy!

The show centered on two university-based parapsychologists, portrayed by Shari Belafonte (as Laura Wingate) and Carl Marotte (as J.J. Stillman) and their explorations of poltergeists, telekinesis and other such eerie phenomena. Also appearing infrequently was Nicole de Boer (as Celia Powell).
MCE's DVD set of BEYOND REALITY contains all 20 Season #1 episodes plus two from the second season. (More customer reviews)The fourth season of HBO's critically acclaimed The Wire picks up after the explosive events the conclusion to the third season, as cop Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West) finds himself patroling the streets of Baltimore and seemingly out of the loop (McNulty is relegated to more of a supporting player in these episodes than ever before) as this season focuses on the coming election between Mayor Royce (Glynn Turman) and Tommy Carcetti (Aidan Gillen), and a group of young corner kids getting ready to go back to school. What makes this season of The Wire so surprisingly compelling isn't the drama between the cops and the crooks like we've seen before, but what this group of young corner boys (Maestro Harrell, Julito McCullum, Tristan Wilds) experience and the choices they make, which not only effect their own lives, but inexplicably effect the lives of everyone else involved as well. In the meantime, new kingpin Marlo (Jamie Hector) makes even more of an impact as the cops try to nail him, Herc (Domenick Lombardozzi) finally gets his stripes, Prez (Jim True-Frost) becomes a teacher, and Omar (Michael K. Williams) gets in over his head when he goes toe to toe with Marlo. By the end of season four, it is apparent that the end is near, and that McNulty and his crew are sitting on a powder keg that will be as explosive as anything that has ever been seen on HBO. Undoubtedly one of the finest and most realistic TV dramas ever crafted, The Wire is once again spectacular entertainment.
