Gallagher - The Smashing Watermelon Collection (1983) Review

Gallagher - The Smashing Watermelon Collection (1983)

I have been waiting a long time for a decent Gallagher DVD to be released, but it has been worth the wait. This compilation contains 11 full length Gallagher concerts including:
Disc 1
"Mad As Hell" "Two Real" "Stuck in the 60's" "The Maddest"
Disc 2
"Melon Crazy" "Over Your Head" "The Bookkeeper" "Overboard"
Disc 3
"We Need A Hero" "Messin' Up Texas" "An Uncensored Evening"
These all appear to be unedited and uncut since there original airing. I used to catch these concerts re-aired on Comedy Central on Saturday mornings but have not seen them for about 10 years. I am SO happy that they finally released this great collection of Gallagher works... his comedy has already stood the test of time for over 20 years, and with this DVD, Gallagher can be introduced to new audiences and remembered by his fans.
There are also 2 "Best of Gallagher" DVD's that have been released, and I am wondering if they are just highlights from the 11 concerts contained on this "Smashing Watermelon Collection" or if they have different material on them. Hopefully someone will review them soon.
If you like Gallagher, I am sure you will buy this collection... but even if you just like comedy, you should get this in order to realize just how smart and funny Gallagher really is and you will discover how much influence he has had on many other comedians.

Heckler (2007) Review

Heckler (2007)

i think the title says it all, this movie would have been better if they would have stuck with the stand-ups and actors, but it just becomes a whine fest for jamie kennedy...... this movie is good for about 15 min. thats about how long the comedians interviews last!!!!!

Heckler, a comedy-documentary that explores the increasingly critical world we live in, follows Jamie Kennedy as he investigates hecklers and the entertainers who endure them: Russell Peters, Lewis Black, Craig Ferguson, Bill Maher, Paul Rodriguez, Roseanne Barr, and more. A fast-moving, "hilarious...claws-out look at the often brutal relationship between performers and their most vocal critics" (VARIETY), Heckler shows just how nasty and mean the fight is between those in the spotlight...and those in the dark.

It\'s always been a dream of mine to do a show at the Fillmore. The name itself is synonymous with legendary performances. Countless iconic musicians and comedians have been on that stage. To be a part of that history was something I\'ll never forget. As much as I was trying to keep my head together before the show, I couldn\'t help but feel like a tourist or just some random dude who won a contest. LET IT GO represents the culmination of material I developed on the road from 2008-2009. As always thanks to everyone who came out to my shows, laughed at the funny stuff and stared during the bombing.I hope you enjoy it. – Bill Burr

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010) Review

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010)

"Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work" is thoroughly enjoying. She has always been outrageous and I knew what to expect. I got what I wanted - a time to laugh and cry and sometimes do both at the same time. Joan is not only a genius, but amazing in her drive and fantastic comedic timing. She thinks on her feet and not only has the guts to say what people keep deep into their psyches, she brazenly lets us look and laugh and not be afraid to peek at life's unfairness. Joan is a fascinating woman, who knows what she wants -she works constantly at 77, keeps herself on the go - I was tired watching her hectic schedule. Joan does not feel alive unless she is working - and she will work anywhere at anytime. Although she complained of not saving money for her old age, she makes plenty and spends it freely on herself and others. Her generosity to staff and thoughtful Thanksgiving dinner belie her unrelenting drive to support a lush lifestyle. She is a workaholic and has kept her brain from "rusting" out, but may "wear out" by constant travel, gigs, writing material, and never stopping trying new venues. Her plastic surgeries and botox injections are discussed as a matter of course and are part of the show business routine she accepts. At the beginning we see her without makeup, and as she is painted up and prepped it is amazing a 77 year old can look that good. She is not afraid to bare her feelings (she give background on leaving Johnny Carson show and her husband's suicide), her foibles (Am I a Diva? All comediennes are angry?) and keeps hacking away at "sacred cows" so we may laugh with her on life in blasphemous joy - it is nothing but cathartic.

Joan is exquisitely complex, smart (reads voraciously), honest, generous, kind and anything but ordinary. What a joy it is to see her full throttle on the big screen.

Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious (2007) Review

Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious (2007)

4.8 stars
By far the best stand-up performance I've seen since Chris Rock's perfect Bigger And Blacker, this is one hour of extremely edgy yet somehow good-natured comedy. Tosh spares nothing and no one, least of all America in general. And he does it all so slyly, with that engaging grin and flashing eyes that say, yeah, you know I'm right, admit it.
The material here is twenty minutes longer than what the Comedy Chunnel shows from this dvd. They cut a lot of the best, most over the top bits, so it's a treat to see them here. What really distinguishes Tosh is the intelligence and subtlety of some of his lines. He's skewering all of us, and our selfish society, and does it with so much verve and bonhomie that you hardly notice how deep the cuts go.
I enjoy a comedian who can get straight to the heart of things, and Tosh is a master at that already on his first dvd. He's one of the few stand-ups I've seen in years who clearly has the goods in spades, and seems more interested in commenting on his version of the truth than getting easy laughs. He says things that seem so wrong at first, but one quickly realizes what's really wrong is how right he is about our complacency and prejudices.
His new show on CC, Tosh.0, is decent, but goes for easy laughs and is nowhere near as funny as this dvd and his earlier cd. Let's hope the tv stardom doesn't derail his excellent stand-up, and that he doesn't go the Rock route and release only one performance every five years. Truth is at a premium these days, and this guy is poised to be a prime conduit.
Absolutely recommended to any fan of Carlin, Pryor, Hicks, or Rock.

Daniel Tosh, comedy's chosen one, has been healing the sick, stopping wars, helping underprivileged children... not to mention filming COMPLETELY SERIOUS, the single greatest hour in comedy. What have you been doing? Tosh has appeared multiple times on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Show with David Letterman, and his debut CD, True Stories I Made Up, is close to reaching ten million copies sold (That's Diamond!!). The torch has been passed and stand-up's newest superstar will try not to drop it.

Shaq & Cedric The Entertainer Present: All Star Comedy Jam (2009) Review

Shaq and Cedric The Entertainer Present: All Star Comedy Jam (2009)

I was introduced to this dvd courtesy of Youtube and a 2-minute clip of Arie Spears. I immediately placed my order for a copy of this comedy show and can't say enough about it. Cedric the Entertainer is brilliant .... Arie Spears is a star who needs to continue to rise because his combination of comedy/improv/impersonation is 100% on point .... and DeRay Davis is a force to be wreckoned with in the comedy world. I was surprised that Tommy Davidson wasn't as funny as he has been in his previous standup concerts...but he warmed up the crowd. Kevin Hart is hysterical. This dvd is well worth every penny (and then some); it's something that for me will never get old!
