(More customer reviews)Sharp-eyed fans may have noticed that the season one set is entitled THE COMPLETE SEASON ONE while seasons two and three do not contain the word COMPLETE. We know virtually every scene in which Jim Neighbors sings was expunged from season two. I am suspecting the same holds for season three. If true for the rest of the series, some of the later episodes will be heavily butchered as the singing forms most of the plot.
All the cut scenes have really taken the wind out of my sail as far as collecting all the seasons. My wife and I stopped watching when "Put on a Happy Face" was cut. Really took the excitement out of the set.
Paramount is too cheap to pay for the rights to the songs, I guess.

(More customer reviews)I don't even know how I came across it or why, but one of my favorite movies of all time is John Candy's 'Going Berserk'. I'm sure not many people remember this one since it probably got limited release, but it's packed with non-stop comedic genius.
John Candy, along with fellow SCTV alumni, Joe Flaherty and Eugene Levy star in this 1983 comedy centered around 'regular joe' John Bourgignon,(Candy)who's about to marry Nancy Reese, a congressman's daughter. Days before the wedding, John, who makes his living between drumming and limo driving, is hypnotized by one of his fare's, a big time cult leader, Rev. Sun Yi Day. The reverend plans to have John kill his 'would be' father-in-law, Ed Reese, on his wedding day, but John doesn't take to the mind control and begins to act like a moron whenever subliminally prompted to kill.
One of Candy's best comedic works of all time! If you like those classic 80's comedies, you won't wanna miss this one. 'Uncle Buck' and 'The Great Outdoors' are what most people will be getting this set for, but for me, it's 'Going Berserk'. Love it!! Oh and wait till you get to the 'I'm alone' part. Well, shucks, I guess every guys been there, huh?

Shrek Forever After (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (2010) Review

(More customer reviews)In the fourth and last installment of the Shrek franchise, Shrek (Mike Myers) finds himself becoming tired of his "domesticated" life when the routines of married life and fatherhood meet with the constant bombardment of fame and somewhat annoying friends. After storming out of his son's first birthday party Shrek runs into Rumplestiltskin (Walt Dohrn), who learns of Shrek's desires to be the ogre he once was and offers him a magical contract that would allow him to be an true ogre for a day, in exchange for one thing. In that exchange, though, Shrek gets much more than he bargained for.
When the first Shrek came out it was a brilliant anti-fairy tale fairy tale. Openly lampooning Disney movies and theme parks, Shrek was a fresh take on the animated fairy tale where the main characters didn't live happily ever after as picture perfect prince and princess, but as ogres, typically the scourge of any fairy tale. Since then two other Shrek movies have come out, and rather than embracing the counter culture of the first film, the franchise bought into it's own hype and into pop culture and lost the spirit of the original. While not bad films, they were unnecessary and even sapped some of the brilliance of the original. Now with the finale of Shrek in theaters, how does it stand up?
More-so than it's predecessors Shrek Forever After tries to come back home to more of the feeling of the first film. Even the plot of the film of Shrek's desire to go back to being a lone ogre on the outskirts of society seems to echo what the filmmakers were desiring to accomplish in picking a premise that allowed them to nearly replicate some of the situations of the first movie. That's one of the strengths of the film is that you get to re-meet the characters in a new fashion and in slightly new characterizations than previous which amps up the fun of this film compared to the previous films.
Reaching into an alternate universe has allowed the writers, and the actors, to revision the characters adding to the freshness of this installment in the series. Fiona is now a warrior, leading an ogre rebellion against the king. Donkey, while still the over talkative, funny if slightly annoying sidekick he's a little more wary and a bit brighter than he was in Shrek's real world. Puss has let himself go, and won't even chase a mouse that's sharing his milk. The real surprise here is Walt Dohrn, a writer/storyboard artist who makes his vocal film debut as the voice of the film's baddie, Rumplestiltskin. Everyone does a great job with their vocal work, but Walt and his character steal the show.
But for all the good, you can't go home, and Shrek doesn't quite go home either. Compared to the first film this one feels a little tame, sterile. First off, the premise makes this almost seem like a remake of the first film, causing it to loose some of it's freshness. On top of that there's a moral that really stands out, which is something I don't recall being aware of while watching the first three Shrek films, even though it was there.
All in all, I would highly recommend this film. Easily it's the second best of the four Shrek films. Each of the three sequels were unnecessary, but this was definitely a higher note to go out on than the last two films. If they had to go through sequels, I'm not sure they could have asked for a better film to go out on. If you've watched the last couple of Shrek films and found yourself to be disappointed give this a try, it doesn't quite capture the magic of the first film but it gets closer than the other sequels.

(More customer reviews)Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty galore was an action pack sequel. The reason I rated it so high is because I took my 3 yr old & 7 yr old to see this movie. It was perfect for their age ranges. My 3 yr old loved the animal factor and the action (the kitty litter scene had him laughing for quite awhile). My 7 yr old enjoyed the secret agent factor the most. Plus, with all of the celebrity voices that gave life to the characters was wonderful! Overall this was an enjoyable family movie. I'm not going to rate this as an adult. It wasn't painful to sit through. The CGI was fantastic. It would be a great idea for the younger kids for Christmas this year.

This dog is smart! And he looks out for people, like his master and the boy who gets lost - a really fun and loving story.

Shot in 2007, Finding Rin Tin Tin is based on the true story of an American corporal and his world renowned German Sheppard dog, Rin Tin Tin. The story begins with Corporal Lee Duncan, stationed in France during World War 1, who rescues a mother and her three German Sheppard puppies. Lee gives the mother and two puppies away, but keeps his favorite puppy, which he lovingly names Rin Tin Tin. When the General warns that keeping a young rambunctious dog is not permitted, Duncan discovers a solution is at hand expert dog handler, German Nikolaus Egger, Rin Tin Tin s mother s original owner, is being held as a POW on their base. At first, Egger is hesitant to help Duncan, but soon warms to him, and though on opposite sides of the war the two men become friends. Egger teaches Rin Tin Tin with patience and kindness, and soon the dog learns amazing skills, such as bringing first aid to soldiers on the battlefield. After the Great War is over, Rin Tin Tin returns home with Duncan and goes on to star in 14 feature films from 1920 - 1931 and was considered to be one of Hollywood s top movie stars.

There are 30 Episodes for Season 5. It really contains some great episodes: My Two favorite season 5 episodes are: Car For Sale and Come Blow Your Top!
Come Blow Your Top had it all. By the fifth season Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton had perfected their roles as Gomer and Sgt Carter respectvely. This storyline exemplified what the entire series was about. Well respected and tough as nails Sgt Carter trying his best to maintain a top notch platoon while the often clumsy but good natured Gomer seemed to always find a way to make waves and get under the Sergeants skin. This episode featured Alan Melvin as Sgt Hacker who put in one of his best performances of the series as he enlisted the help of Gomer to make Sgt Carter blow his top and win a bet at the same time.

(More customer reviews)I've just finished watching the first side of disk one(there are three two sided disks just as in season one.) which contains the first six episodes of season two plus creator Sherwood Schwartz commentating on the episode "The Little Dictator". The color is fantastic as is the sound. The picture is so clear that you'd swear you were watching the shows in their original run. Much clearer and much more colorful than the syndicated television versions, and best of all, UNEDITED! syndication chops off probably 5 to 8 minutes of each episode. Unfortuneatley, there isn't much for bonus features, but just having each episode unedited in great color and clarity is more than enough, with a great price to boot.

Megamind (Single-Disc Edition) (2010) Review

On the one hand, it takes the existing traditional tropes of comic-book superhero and supervillain and works within them, but at the same time it ventures into territory that one rarely sees, going one step beyond the traditional to answer two questions: (1) What really makes a supervillain truly 'bad'? and (2) What happens when the supervillain unexpectedly wins?
The film starts off with a traditional hook - Megamind apparently falling to his doom - and then flashes back to the beginning, with the origins of the two classic protagonists, superhero Metro Man and supervillain Megamind, each sent out as an infant in a spacepod from their respective doomed homeworlds. From there, however, things begin to take a twist. Megamind is the supervillain, but more from bad luck than anything else (Metro Man's pod lands in a mansion where he is adopted by rich parents who give him everything, Megamind's pod on the other hand lands in a penitentiary where he is adopted by the inmates). Megamind doesn't become a supervillain so much out of evil as much as lack of options, his main talent apparently being wreaking havoc and scaring the hell out of people. He and Metro Man become enemies/rivals in a series of confrontations where, in Megminds own words "Our battles quickly got more elaborate. He would win some, I would ALMOST win others!".
And, in classic comic-book tradition, a plucky news reporter, Roxanne Ritchie, and her hapless and socially inept camerman, Hal Stewart, are always on the scene when one of Megamind's schemes unfolds, with the result that Roxanne gets abducted so many times that it becomes almost routine ("Alligators, yeah, mm-hmm. I was thinking about it on the way over...").
But things take an unexpected twist when, in spite of all the glitches, Megamind's scheme actually works and Metro Man is apparently destroyed, leaving only a skeleton bearing his cape behind. At first Megamind is ecstatic, but after only a few days the supervillian finds himself at a loss as to what to do next. What _does_ a supervillain do when he has no superhero to challenge or to be challenged by?
In his existiential angst, Megamind unexpectedly ends up talking to Roxanne, albeit disguised as Bernard, a museum attendent at the Metro Man Museum. From her, he gets the inspiration to create a new superhero to restore the balance in his life. Unfortunately his plan goes hideously awry when the recipient of his superhero formula turns out to be Hal, Roxanne's inept and all too flawed camerman.
And once again the story turns back to the question of just what makes a supervillain truly bad. Hal isn't evil per se, but he is lazy, petulant, completely self-centered and prone to tantrums when he doesn't get his way. Highly destructive tantrums once he discovers that he, as the intended new superhero Titan, has powers that put him beyond anyone else's control. Jonah Hill as the voice of Hal/Titan manages to perfectly bring out these serious flaws in Titan's character that result in Titan becoming a far more menacing threat to society than the ostensibly 'evil' Megamind ever was.
Craftsmanship-wise, everything in Megamind works well. The animation is colorful and eye-catching, the character design superb, and the voice actors distinctive and entertaining (Will Ferrell as Megamind, Brad Pitt as Metro Man, Tina Fey as Roxanne Ritchie, Jonah Hill as Hal Stewart/Titan, and David Cross as Minion). There are also a lot of references and in-jokes worked in, some fairly obvious (Minion's exo-suit with the diving helmet head and gorilla-like body are a direct take from the classicly-bad scifi film Robot Monster) and fairly subtle (the museum attendant Bernard is voiced by Ben Stiller, who played a museum guard named Bernard in the two Night At The Museum movies).
Though the film was released at the theaters in 3D, you won't miss a thing seeing it on a DVD. Quite frankly, the whole 3D thing is a waste in most movies that have come out with it and Megamind is no exception.
Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys good animation with entertaining characters and story.

Family Affair - Season 2 (1966) Review

(More customer reviews)Just finished a 30 episode Season 1 marathon! What a great show. Not the funniest..but very touching. It reminded me of my younger days (yes I was alive when it first aired...I am around the twins age). Brian Keith does an excellent job of being tough but loving towards the kids. Sebastian Cabot is a joy to watch. Sorry, but I didn't care for John Williams (Sebastian missed several episodes in season 1 due to illness). Kathy Garver is sweet as Cissy. I would have like to see more of her...I realize the twins were the major focus. Anissa and Johnny were adorable. Season 2 will bring more great episodes..notably when the twins want to know where babies come from. Season 3 is my favorite...hope MPI will release early next year. For now..anyone thinking about this purchase...I can only say : It is great family fun !

Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.: The Fourth Season Review

(More customer reviews)The history of these DVD sets since season one has had the episodes literally butchered when it came to the music in the show. Even a small snipit of Sargent Carter singing "The Night Was Meant For Love" in one episode, or a full version of Gomer singing "This Train is a Going Home Train", the cheapsakes that are producing these DVD sets of Gomer Pyle make even Season 4 a disappointment. However, in watching these episodes I'm finding that it's not just music that's cut; there is also dialog in scenes that's been hacked out. Because of the electronic graphic and CG era that we live in, I look forward to shows being released on DVD because there are no "bugs" in the corners of the screens, no animated graphics promoting upcoming shows, or any other distractions. The shows for the most part are the way they should be seen, uncut and commercial free. This is not the case with the Gomer Pyle DVD's including season 4. Dialog, music and other scenes cut because the production companies don't want to pay the royalties for the music included in the original releases. Why dialog is cut, I'm not sure. I was such a fan of this show, and really wanted a complete collection of the episodes, but I'm very disappointed in the results that have come about on my store shelves. If we continue to purchase these edited sets, the production companies will continue to put out these cheap imitations of the real show. I've written a letter to CBS with a formal complaint, but I know it will fall on deaf ears. But if more enthusiasts like us continue, maybe we'll make a difference. If you're an avid fan of Gomer, then this is the best we can get for now. I only wish they were complete episodes.

Gilligan's Island: The Complete Third Season (1964) Review

I don't remember when the series was on during primetime, but I fondly recall coming home from school to catch it in the afternoons. This DVD set covers the final season of the short-lived series and it contains some of my favorite episodes. Gilligan thinking that he's a vampire, Gilligan being hunted by a big game hunter, MaryAnn thinking that she's Ginger, a witch doctor casting spells on the castaways, and many more memorable episodes. My all time favorite is included here - "The Producer" with Phil Silvers as the over-the-top movie producer Harold Hecuba.

#1 - Up at Bat - After being bitten by a bat, Gilligan is convinced that he is turning into a vampire.

Here's Lucy: Season Two Review

This is great news for Lucy fans that these shows will be out quickly, and I hope the film quality is just as good as the quick releases of this great series! Season Two starts out with a family trip out west, and after that, the great guest stars just keep on coming show after show! The first of these guest stars is Patty Andrews, who re-enacts the famous WWII Andrews Sisters singing act with Lucy and daughter Lucie Arnaz- they are just great! There are so many great performances by Milton Berle, Paul Winchell, Gary Morton, Johnny Carson, Ed McMahon, Jack LaLanne, Liberace, Lawrence Welk, Ann-Margret, Wally Cox, Alan Hale, Wayne Newton, Carol Burnett and many others. Even the wonderful Vivian Vance returns to guest star as Lucy's friend Vivian Jones. Lucy's real life 77 year old mother DeDe Ball (she passed away in 1977 at age 84) is seen as the woman in the audience on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. DeDe was in the viewing audience of every single show of I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy. They say you can hear her distinctive laugh and even hear her talking (DeDe always said UH-OH when her daughter Lucy was in trouble) on the background tracks in Lucy's shows, but this is the rarest time that you actually get to see Lucy's mom on a show! This second season is just wonderful with so many great stars and performances, one of the best being Desi Arnaz Jr. and Ann-Margret singing together and if Season Three comes out just as quickly, it won't be long before we get to see the highest rated show of Here's Lucy, which is the first show of Season Three-Lucy Meets The Burton's!

The Vicar of Dibley - 10th Anniversary Specials Review

(More customer reviews)After a several-year hiatus, the creative team and, remarkably enough, the whole original cast, return to Dibley, the little town that never says die. Except it's approaching dead.
The popularity of this show was originally based on its essentially upbeat, positive attitude and genial self-deprecation at a time when many sitcoms were descending into thirty-minute volleys of insults. So why is so much of the humor in these two episodes based on David slapping down Alice? Is it really funny that he fantasizes about his daughter-in-law's death? Are we amused to see Geraldine drunk in the pulpit, snarking at parishoners in the pews? Is the show really improved by personality clashes that amount to little more than volleys of darts back and forth between the principals?
There are some good concepts underlying the episodes. For example, in the Christmas episode, the village gets the idea in their heads that Geraldine is homosexual. Wow, what a great and timely concept! Just imagine the wacky hilarity as a small English village comes to grips with a lesbian in the pulpit! Go on, just imagine it! Are you imagining it? Good for you, because you've put more effort into the idea than the creative team did. They throw this sharp, fertile idea out, then sweep it aside almost as soon as it finds play.
These episodes aren't a total wash. The New Year's episode is particularly touching, comprising as it does an appeal to the G8 leaders to stop fiddling while Rome burns and do something about global poverty. Though perhaps a touch maudlin, this episode provides an appropriate extension of the characters into a real issue that Christians have failed to come to grips with. This is a very, very good use of the characters and their environment.
The special features are also worth watching. Of the content on the DVD, perhaps the best is a short sketch of the show done for Comic Relief. Though only fifteen minutes long, it's a good capsule of the characters, their conflicts, and the show's potential for social good and for touching interactions. This is why we fell in love with the series in the first place. There's also a gag reel, Dibley Defrocked. We get to see the actors riff on their lines, improvise short scenes in character, and mug for the camera. And it's all surprisingly sharp and witty. Perhaps if the creative team had trusted their actors more, they might have had a pair of episodes worthy of the lingering memory of the original series.
This DVD is for fans of the original series only. Newbies will find it slow, disjointed, and wearing; it depends too heavily on our memory of the characters and their quirks more than on actually developing new insights. Those already invested in the show will find these episodes fairly trying, but there's enough to like, and it has its high points. Just don't confuse this with the original show, or you'll only be disappointed.

Fran Fine (Fran Drescher) is a door-to-door cosmetics salesgirl from Queens who unwittingly becomes nanny to the children of rich Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy). As confidante to shy Maggie (Nicolle Tom), mischevious Brighton (Benjamin Salisbury) and junior couch-case Gracie (Madeline Zima), Fran discovers a whole new way of life, living in ritzy Manhattan and meeting the famous celebrities Max hires to star in his various shows.
Bringing Fran back to real life - and always there for a helping hand - is Max's deadpan butler Niles (Daniel Davis), along with her mother Sylvia (Renee Taylor), Grandma Yetta (Ann Guilbert) and best friend Val (Rachel Chagall). And there's also Max's frosty business associate CC Babcock (Lauren Lane) who is noticing the growing attraction between Max and Fran...and is as jealous as hell!
The first season of THE NANNY perfectly sets up the premise and the main characters. The Middle: The Complete First Season (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)You know all those over-hyped, supposedly 'edgy' and daring comedies the critics insist all discerning TV fans SHOULD love and appreciate? Well, The Middle isn't among them ;) But while critics have given the show a lukewarm reception, all of the actual TV viewers I know have been immediately charmed and delighted by this underrated gem of a show.
The Middle doesn't go out of its way to flaunt just how edgy and risque it can be. It doesn't, like so many other critically lauded shows, feature wholly unlikable people doing wholly unlikable things while half-winking at the camera over just how zany they are. It doesn't go for over-the-top wackiness or the kind of constant lowbrow sexual innuendo and fart jokes that you might unplesantly associate with high school locker rooms.
Instead, The Middle simply tells the story of a family that's likable and even admirable despite also being realistically, comically flawed. The humor stems from the strong characterizations, sharp dialogue and the clever insight peppered throughout. (You'll be thinking "that is SO true...it's scary how well I can relate to that!" at least a few times per episode). We get flashes heartwarming poignancy here too, but rest assured that it's never too sappy or forced.
This is one of those rare shows that successfully blends humor with heart, and I was pleasantly surprised to realize how much I've come to love spending time with this family. I used to have a weird visceral dislike for Patricia Heaton and, for reasons alluded to above, rarely like sitcoms...but this show immediately reversed my opinion of Patricia Heaton's acting abilities, and even gave me a renewed hope for the sitcom genre!
One major reason it's worth owning on DVD: The vast majority of the episodes not only hold up with multiple viewings, but actually improve, as you notice subtle moments of awesomeness that you were too busy laughing to pick up on the first time around. So many shows *claim* to have struck that balance between wit and poignancy; to have created lovable yet hilariously flawed characters; to have written dialogue that's sharp and memorable. This is one of the few shows that, in my clearly Middle-loving opinion, has actually succeeded in all those areas and more. It's a show that provides mood-boosting humor with moments of sharp insight into what it means to be part of a family and a steady supply of heartwarming charm. I can't wait to get my fangirl hands on those DVDs, and look forward to rooting for and laughing with the Hecks for many years to come!

Patricia Heaton stars as Frankie Heck in this warm and witty single-camera comedy about raising a family and lowering your expectations. Frankie Heck is a superhero. Well, no, not an actual superhero - but sometimes it seems to Frankie as though getting her kids out the door for school every morning is a superheroic act.
