Paranormal State: The Complete Season Four Review

It hasn't been very long ago that I thought paranormal occurences were made up. Now I am a true believer. I remembered years ago the house I grew up in had alot of unusual noices and sounds and missing items. I was told by my parents that it was nothing. But watching this show and learning that what I saw and heard probably were ghosts or other things. I like this show because nothing is done to make an investigation more interesting. I think these young investigators have done alot to do away with everything but the real deal. This season is the best one they have done so far and the quality of the show is alot better than other hunters. Good job well done on this DVD.

If your interested in the paranormal, this series will not let you down.
The various cases are interesting, Buell & his cast actually have screen presence by just being themselves, and the outcome of each episode is not always predictable.
I've viewed Ghost Adventures & Ghost Hunters, and similar themed programs, yet none have the overall appeal this series consistently offers.
As i pre-ordered "Season three," here on Amazon, i was also knocked out by the low, low price!
You simply can't go wrong for value & entertainment.

Ghost Hunters - Season 2, Part 1 (2004) Review

Ghost Hunters - Season 2, Part 1 (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Big Vision, the company responsible for putting out "Ghost Hunters: Season 2, Parts 1 and 2" and "Ghost Hunters: Season 1," still have a long way to go with the production quality of their discs, but they definitely listen to their customers and attempt to make corrections. For starters, they've hulked up the DVD cases for Season 2, making it virtually impossible for the discs to become dislodged during shipping. This was a major complaint of many folks of Season 1's release. Secondly, the picture has gotten better. Granted, it's not perfect, and it's still too grainy during the investigations to see everything that's going on, but it has improved slightly. Finally, the audio is okay. As stated before, there is still plenty of space for changes and improvements, but Big Vision seems to be taking its customers advice to heart.
Now, on to Season 2, Part 1, in which we find Jason and Grant and the rest of the TAPS team seeking out more ghosts or lack thereof. This particular set includes one of my favorite cases: Myrtles Plantation. They also revisit Eastern State Penitentiary and tackle the Rolling Hills Asylum, the wacky Winchester House, and the U.S.S. North Carolina.
TAPS has always managed to impress me with their professionalism. Search any number of "ghost hunting" websites and you'll see that many of them are nothing more than a bunch of teen and college-aged kids hanging out in the graveyard or trespassing onto abandoned property. TAPS takes the paranormal very seriously. It almost takes an act of God to make them label a location as haunted. When they do, you can rest assured that they've done everything in their power to debunk a ghost's existence.
I highly recommend this DVD set, as well as Part 2 of Season 2 and the first season. You'll be impressed at how the TAPS team takes time to explain what an EMF detector is, what "orbs" are and probably aren't, and how something as simple as a mirror can play tricks on your mind.
Another great thing about this particular set is in the deleted scenes area where Brian is confronted by a woman and called a few derogatory terms. It's fun at the expense of Brian, but let's face it, Brian's just a funny guy.
"Dude, Run!!!"

Ghost Hunters: Season 3, Part 1 (2004) Review

Ghost Hunters: Season 3, Part 1 (2004)
Average Reviews:

Unlike the other "Paranormal" shows out there, I still find TAPS to be the most credible of them all. The investigation at The Birdcage in Tombstone was awesome, and the USS Lexington episode was fantastic. But, to me, the investigation that involved the Manson Murders, and the tortured sounds of those EVPs really shook me, I have to admit.
That one stuck with me, and I would have to say that was the most gut and heart-wrenching of any episode of Ghost Hunters I've seen.
I write horror, and I don't shake easily, but remembering how beautiful Sharon Tate was and hearing those EVPs really got to me.
That has to be one of their best investigations yet.
EDIT:
When this review was written, the product information was not yet up. As the Manson episode was the last episode of Part One of Season Three, I assumed it would be on Part One of Season Three's DVD set. Apparently it is not.
But, Tombstone, The Stanley, and Nightmare Noises are, and they are definitely worth checking out.
GH has come to my town for Eastern State Penitentiary, I wish they would come back and do Fort Mifflin (a supposedly VERY active fort that was used in the Revolutionary War where hundreds died battling the British Navy as they pushed their way up the Delaware giving Washington time to regroup at Valley Forge, and later became a prison during the Civil War).

A Haunting: Season 3 (2008) Review

A Haunting: Season 3 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season 3 of A Haunting continues to provide well made documentaries of paranormal experiences and investigations. The episodes are just as good, and in some cases better, than those from Seasons 1 & 2. A Haunting is a documentary series that explores allegedly true tales of hauntings, ghosts and the paranormal. Each show is composed of high quality atmospheric reenactments that follow descriptions of eyewitnesses. Superimposed on the action is the creepy, measured voice of a narrator who sets the mood and explains the events. The show is exceptionally effective. Most episodes have at least some unnerving moments and some are downright scary. Viewers interested in the paranormal should love this series as should people who like horror movies.
Below is a short description of each episode in Season 3. The number in parentheses is my "scariness rating"; scale = 1-5 with 5 being the scariest. Minor spoilers throughout.
Fear House - Two separate families independently experience terrifying events in a Missouri house that seems to be able to identify and attack a persons deepest fears (3)
The Attic - Several entities, one good, one harmful, torment a Michigan family when they move into a new home (1)
Hidden Terror - Mysterious ghosts scare a young couple and their friend away from a house in upstate New York (2)
The Unleashed - A young Michigan man unwisely dabbles in black magic over the site of an Indian burial ground and releases demons that psychologically attack him and his family (2)
A Haunting in Ireland - The arrival of a new baby into an Irish household triggers extreme poltergeist activity (3)
The Forgotten - When a young family moves into a one hundred year old home in Salt Lake City, they discover a sinister hidden room where an evil entity dwells (4)
The Wheatsheaf Horror - The use of an ad hoc Ouija board leads to the dramatic escalation of paranormal activity in an English pub where a young girl was murdered (3)
The Possessed - The paranormal investigation of a Virginia barn used for satanic rituals goes awry when the lead investigator becomes possessed by a demonic entity (3)
The Presence - A dysfunctional family is the target of paranormal attack when they move into a northern California house where a demon was unleashed by Black Mass (4)
The Dark Side - An exceptionally creepy New England house is the site of recurrent paranormal events; when a young couple buys the property they discover that the current residents have nailed all of the upstairs doors closed (4)

Ghost Hunters: Season 4, Part 2 (2008) Review

Ghost Hunters: Season 4, Part 2 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ghost Hunters is a was a good show, but it is saddled with loud horrible music. The music [insert loud keyboard sound here] drowns out anything the viewer might hear. The music also incorporates odd sounds so if you COULD hear something, you can't tell if it's the ghost sounds or the music [insert loud "bang" here]. I personally do not need the music[fade the music here]. In fact, I get frustrated, not scared because of the music [insert more insidental music here]. One thing that "Most Haunted" and "Paranormal State" do is use the music in the history portions of thier shows and keep it to a minimum to none on the actual ghost part so you can hear with the crew what is going on. With "Ghost Hunters" the music tends to make the viewer feel as if they are really not to be included on the hunt that you, the viewer are an outsider looking in on the clique as they hunt and you will find out when they are good and ready to let you in on the haunting. That's a cheat to the fan, really. On the epidoe called "Spirits On The Water" everytime a caption appears, there is loud whoosh of music, at times so loud that it drowns out the dialogue. There are also loud knocks every few seconds designed to put out on the edge of your seat, but actually are so loud you can't tell what happened on the show. And suddenly, in odd places, there is a loud keyboard "shock" sound which actually cheapens this show. This whole show seems so hokey now.I also get frustrated with the editing. It cuts off sounds, jumps about and sometimes makes the show flow very uneven. makes the feel of the show "rushed". Like the early morning shows on tv when they have a guest, get the guest to start talking, then hurry them through the segment because we're about out of time! They tend to be very repetitive in some things. For example, in the "Bottled Spirits" episode, within the first 4 1/2 minutes they repeat 5 times that cases with children take high priority. That's great, but why tell us 5 times in a row? Why not say it once and use the rest of the time on ghost footage or history? It reminds me of "Barney" because on that kid's show, they repeat stuff over and over for education. Hopefully little kids aren't watching ghost shows when they should be watching "Barney".
One good thing is Jason and Grant take a more active roll in this season rather than sitting back in the van and letting the others do the work. Gone is Jason's superior attitude that he carried in the earlier seasons. He seems more down to earth and the crew doesn't seem so tense and worried about him losing his temper like they did in the past. They all seem to work well together now.
This show also tends to set up scenes as one thing, go to break, then come back and the scene turns out differently. There's alot of hype for things that almost always, when it comes back from commercial break, are usually false or explained away in a few seconds, or really have no significance to anything at all.
I had stopped watching for awile due to the music and attitude of the show. But now I started watching again. I do like it, but I see it getting stale. The formula is pretty much the same as in seasons past. They repeat what some terms are endlessly such as what an EMF is and EVP. They talk between the vans with walkie talkies...why? I don't know...and it's usually stuff they already established back at the round table or already discussed. And they almost always bump knuckles in the end. This show really needs to break up the repetition in explanations, flow, everything. You can predict each episode how it will go...Jason willl say this...Grant will do this....Steve will explaine this...week in and week out...and in reality...that is not how the paranormal works.
Also, this season, almost all the dialogue seems "staged" and rehearsed. It would be a much more enjoyable show if it weren't so "puffed up" and the music toned down or pretty much eliminated. This show used to be enjoyable, but due to the over editing, the loud music, the staged scenes, it's not so good anymore. There's no "meat" to it, so repeated watchings are just dull.
This also contains the embarrassing live event that had the internet a buzz claiming that TAPS was faking it. You be the judge but the coat pull has me suspicious, too. Also, I noticed far more of the "Did you see that!" type stuff and not actually showing the viewer. Why? Because the camera is on the stars of the show!

This "Best of Ghost Hunters" Dvd was just recycling previous (inconclusive for the most part!) shows - certainly not anything new or exciting at all. The team bickering that plagued season 1 & some of season two is down played in season 3. Jason & Grant's team works more like a well oiled machine. If you are new to the series, you should start with either of the season 3 sets. Watch the earlier seasons afterward to see how it started.
There is one ghastly episode: the "Manson House". Those who are old enough to remember the Charles Manson massacres in the 1960's may find this bringing back bad memories. Even Jason & Grant looked disturbed by the gruesome details.
The top-notch episodes in this half of the season are:
U.S.S. LEXINGTON & WARWICK CITY HALL
THE JIM HENSON STUDIOS & THE "MANSON" HOUSE
NORTHERN STATE HOSPITAL & UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
SAN FRANCISCO PRESIDIO & LULLABY LANE
THE GIBBONS HOUSE & MOORE THEATER
A PRIEST HOUSE & SPRAGUE MANSION
LYCEUM RESTERAUNT & HAWTHORN HOUSE
WAVERLY HILLS SANATORIUM & ATHOL HOUSE
GHOST HUNTERS REVELATIONS
Bonus Material:
Deleted Scenes
Additional Investigations
While not quite as memorable as season 3's set #1, this set is still well worth getting. It is nice to see the team hunting ghosts instead of themselves.

Just received this DVD and was sorely disappointed. I guess I've been spoiled by only watching the good ones with David Wells and Ciaran O'Keefe so far. The THREE episodes on here (yes, only three) all have that over dramatic/over acting Derek A. in them. In addition, they were not at all scary, nothing substantial happened in any of them, and I actually fell asleep during the last one. Very sorry I wasted my money on this. Derek's constant yammering throughout all three episodes gets old fast. Seriously, the man does not shut up. I recommend season 7 and up only.

If you have Ghost Hunters Season 2, Vols. 1 & 2, you'll notice that two episodes are missing. The Top 20 countdown and the Halloween Special, both of which are contained on this "Best of" DVD. But note, these are the only 2 episodes on the disc. While I'm glad that these episodes are available, it seems dumb to put them on a separate disc when they were a part of the regular season. A double dip? You make the call! The Halloween Special is particularly of interest to fans because it's where Brian Harnois is allowed back into TAPS, making its omission from the season confusing.
While I love having Ghost Hunters on DVD, please "powers that be," hire a different company in the future. These transfers and audio mixes are the worst ever. Because they're so bad, I'll only rent these titles instead of buying them. If, however, they rectify these issues, I would buy them in a second.
