ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS returns for a fifth series of unbridled fun and hilarity, with 8 superb new episodes. Join Eddy and Patsy as they sink even lower into the abyss...
"Cleanin'" - With Saffy gone on a long-overdue holiday, Patsy and Eddy have the house to themselves, though curiously it isn't everything they imagined it would be. Eddy has moved her PR business into her living-room, with several high-profile new clients on the books including Emma Bunton. Suddenly Saffy returns..with an announcement that will send Eddy's world into a tailspin.
"Book Clubbin'" - Eddy and Patsy's little book club meets to discuss their latest selection, an abridged mini version of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray', though Mariella Frostrup fails to bring her celebrity pals. Meanwhile Saffy invites her boyfriend around to break the big news.
"Panickin'" - Eddy installs a panic room, whilst Patsy tries to get chummy with Minnie Driver. Real panic ensues when a lockdown occurs leaving Eddy and Patsy trapped in the high-tech fortress, leaving Minnie in the 'capable' hands of Bubble.
"Huntin' Shootin' Fishin'" - Eddy is doing some Royal PR so she and Pats decide to travel down to the country to see how the other half live. Saffy holds her baby shower with Emma Bunton and her ever-bizarre old school friend Sarah (aka 'Titty KaKa')
"Birthin'" - Saffy has gone into labour, ruining Patsy's expensive outfit when her water breaks. Marshall and Bo stop by for another strange interlude, whilst Katy Grin has been cast as Roxie Hart in 'Chicago'.
"Schmoozin'" - The lost Beatle tapes have been found, and Eddy's in love again, this time with an old school flame. Patsy's old sex films get released by a Japanese company including 'Boobarella'.
"Exploitin'" - Patsy has signed up baby Jane (or Lola) with an infant modelling agency, and a job has come up for a Jean Paul Gautier photo shoot at the zoo. The only problem is getting around Saffy...
"Cold Turkey" - Christmas has come again, and this time Eddy's staying home with the family. Patsy, in a moment of sheer rage, finally lets Eddy have it before mysteriously passing out. In the hospital, Patsy is told she is dying. Her wayward sister Jackie comes to visit, but does she have a more sinister motive? Is this really the end for Pats....?
AB FAB finally raises the bar after the lacklustre Series 4. Once again Jennifer Saunders has given us a hilarious, laughter-filled ride. Longtime fans rejoice: Series 5 is one to treasure!
Starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks and June Whitfield. Guest starring Kate O'Mara as Jackie, Elton John, Clarissa Dickson Wright, Kristen Scott Thomas, Mariella Frostrup, Emma Bunton, Minnie Driver, Jean Paul Gautier and Naoko Mori as Sarah.

In Absolutely Fabulous: Series 5, Edina and Patsy surround themselves with a constellation of stars, including Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Gosford Park), former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, Hollywood star Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, Gross Pointe Blank), fashionista Jean-Paul Gaultier, and the one-and-only Elton John! High on the agenda are book clubs with London's top glitterati, weekends in the country a la Madonna and Guy, and intimate gatherings with Elton on the piano. But when Saffy returns from a few months as an aid worker, Edina's heady world is turned upside down by her startling news. Babies and Bollinger don't mix, after all...or do they?

Absolutely Fabulous - White Box (1994)

This ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS special originally aired during Christmas in 2004.
With Saffy (Julia Sawalha) in Africa getting married, Eddy (Jennifer Saunders) decides to renovate the kitchen...again. She calls in her old friends Bettina and Max (Miranda Richardson and Patrick Barber), but Bettina's concept of "white box" soon causes more trouble than Eddy wants. Meanwhile Patsy (Joanna Lumley) is in hospital for some "pay as you go" procedures. Adding to the chaos are Marshall and Bo (Christopher Ryan and Mo Gaffney), on the run from the authorities following their latest fraudulent television ministry.
Needless to say, by the time Saffy returns home, the kitchen is still in a shocking state. Convinced the answer lies in one of her myriad past lives, Eddy organises for a regression to find the kitchen of her dreams...
It's fun catching up with old characters Max and Bettina (previously seen in the "New Best Friend" episode from Season 2), plus there are some great cameo roles for Nathan Lane as an eccentric designer, and Laurie Metcalf ("Roseanne") as Eddy's psychic medium. Home design guru Sir Terence Conran also puts in a fleeting appearance. And don't forget the always-hilarious Mother (June Whitfield) and Bubble (Jane Horrocks).
It's been a long time in coming to DVD, but fans of AbFab are sure to love it!

Edina and Patsy are back and devastatingly divine in this extra fabulous special, with a hilarious guest appearance by Nathan Lane! Edina has been bitten by the home makeover bug and wants to redecorate the kitchen. The trouble is, she's awfully fuzzy on the specifics. At wit's end, Eddy and Patsy shop for inspiration -- under threat from Saffy to make a decision -- but will they fail and have to resort to redecoration regression therapy?DVD Features:FeaturetteOther

Break out the Bolly and the Japanese finger-food for the third hilarious series of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, the show that is - well - absolutely fabulous!
DOORHANDLE - Edina's got an electronic organiser and a plan to become a model (of efficiency, that is). And what's more efficient than flying to New York on the Concorde for a doorknob?
HAPPY NEW YEAR - It's New Year's Eve and Edina's got a full house - including Patsy's ultra-glam sister Jackie. But Edina's not going to let the crowd interfere with her resolution to have more fun!
SEX - Edina and Patsy plan to get in touch with their inner sexuality - they're planning an orgy!
JEALOUS - Edina's feeling low and needs an award for her PR work to make her feel better. Supermodel Naomi Campbell could be her ticket to success (that's if arch-rival Claudia Bing doesn't get to her first!).
FEAR - Saffy's moved out and Mother has become a Shopping Network junkie. Patsy might be moving to New York and suddenly Edina is free to change the whole direction of her life. Straight down could be a refreshing course!
THE END - Cosmodrama, deep breathing, sand play - Edina's on a quest for inner peace and enlightenment. Before the search drives her crazy, she'd better find Patsy in New York...
With Jennifer Saunders (Edina), Joanna Lumley (Patsy), Julia Sawalha (Saffy), June Whitfield (Mother) and Kathy Burke (Magda).
Guest starring Helen Lederer, Gary Beadle, Lulu, Celia Imrie, Naomi Campbell, Ruby Wax, Josie Lawrence and Kate O'Mara.

Gentlemen Prefer French & Saunders (1953) Review

Gentlemen Prefer French and Saunders (1953)
Average Reviews:

Dawn French & Jennifer Saunders emerged on the British comedy scene as one of the new crop of performers who began at the "Comic Strip" club. This clan produced great TV comedy throughout the '80s & '90s, much to America's indifference: "The Young Ones (the most successful of the bunch stateside)," "The Comic Strip Presents...," "Bottom," "Filthy, Rich, & Catflap," and "French & Saunders." Then, Jennifer Saunders wrote and starred in a program based on a sketch from a "French & Saunders" show called "Absolutely Fabulous." Of course, it became an worldwide hit and put Saunders on the map. "AbFab" is unquestionably brilliant and Edina Monsoon a fantastic creation but the fact that Yanks love "AbFab" while remaining ignorant of "French & Saunders" is like having people love John Cleese's "Fawlty Towers" while never having seen his work in "Monty Python's Flying Circus." "French & Saunders," being a sketch show, covers a wider range of subjects and humor than "AbFab" and reveals Dawn French as a formidable talent on her own and a perfect compliment to Saunders. Many of the shows parody popular films and musical acts and, while some pieces may be very dry, others are rather vulgar and savage. Personally, I think these shows are greater than "AbFab" in that there is so much more in them - including the full breadth of Saunders talent (both women have an endless stream of diverse characters inside them). Grab this disc and discover what they already know overseas: that French & Saunders are the greatest comedy team of the past 20 years!

French & Saunders - The Ingenue Years Review

French and Saunders - The Ingenue Years
Average Reviews:

This collection has what is some of the earliest material from any of the French & Saunders DVD collections and some of the best. Whereas the other DVDs rely more of parodies of well-known films, this DVD features some of the ladies' best repeated characters and aggressively bizarre but hilarious scenes (like a profile of two strange performance artists). The scenes, as a result, succeed more as the comedy is not limited to the confines of movie plots or characters that must be lampooned. There are many classics bits here which the girls have kept around for years in live appearances (i.e., a discussion between two schoolgirls - "worldly" Dawn & naive Jennifer - about contraceptive devices). And, as a bonus, the DVD features their early '90s Christmas special which includes guests shots by Adrian Edmondson (Vyvyan of "The Young Ones," Eddie of "Bottom," and Jennifer Saunder's husband) and Christopher Ryan (Mike of "The Young Ones," Dave Hedgehog of "Bottom," and Marshall of "Absolutely Fabulous"). Also, look for Dawn French's husband, comedian Lenny Henry, in a fine Dinner Party sketch. Other highlights: a history of dance crazes and the absurd conversations which take place in Jennifer's sparse flat. Great stuff!

i've been a long-time french and saunders fan and think that at they're best they're amazing. i'd heard that their latest series for the BBC, 6 episodes which ran last year i believe, got tepid to bad reviews, so i wasn't sure what to expect for this. fortunately, i found this release to be as enjoyable as any of their other released DVDs. the duo, noticeably older than their appearances on previous compilations, still have tons of energy and an uncanny knack for comedy that isn't ever mean-spirited and is oftentimes surrealistically funny. the movie parodies are actually the least funny parts (mostly just including parodies of cold mountain and troy and nods to kill bill and the matrix). the highlights include french and saunders on their way to work at the BBC; the familiar but always wacky conversations in jennifer's all-white living room; two incredibly funny scenes where coldplay's lead singer's mother calls him; and a parody of a british tv show called rosemary and thyme and reworked as "sausages and mash" which, like their house of idiot parody, is extremely funny even if you're not familiar w/ the source. great stuff.

I have always been a fan of Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French; they are the funniest actresses in the world, bar none. And after four DVDs were released of some of their best sketches, I was sure that this was all that was going to be shown in America. But, I have been proven wrong, for here is the first of two new DVDs being released by BBC - DVD! Clearly, you can see that this DVD will include the hilarious special for "Titanic" but it will also include the spoof on "Making-of" documentaries that is hosted by Jennifer Saunders co-star Joanna Lumley from "Absolutely Fabulous"! At this moment there isn't much information on what else will be included, but in a recent BBC America cataloge it stated that this DVD will have 4 1/2 hours of F&S which is quite a lot more than the other DVDs, which usually run for not even two hours! So, it seems we might be getting closer to having nearly every moment from the long-running series avalible here in America! Mark your calender, because French and Saunders : On the Rocks and Back with a Vengance will be released on March 1st! Also, on a side note, if you want a copy of BBC's hit soap opera "EastEnders" (which will be released publicly on March 1st as well), you can find a copy on the BBC America Shop website for sale...right now! It has been on sale there for almost a month already, so if you want this copy you can get it on bbcamericashop.com before most! If only they would do it with these DVDs.....

All of the 4 available French & Saunders DVDs released in the U.S. so far are good, entertaining examples of fine British parodies, but "Living in a Material World" is beyond fabulous. It includes as a BONUS FEATURE the Easter Special that ran on Comedy Central as "The French & the Saunders" . . . which puts a hysterical spin on Peter Jackson's "LOTR" movies that even Ian McKellen reportedly suggested Jackson include on the bumper disc for the trilogy. Especially at amazon.com's low price, you can't afford not to own this DVD if you love F&S or LOTR!

This is black comedy, a devastatingly funny, satiric look at "reality" TV a la Jerry Springer, with crazed guests and equally crazed backstage doings at a TV show. Jennifer Saunders is sensational, and all others in the marvelous cast are also brilliant. Each episode of the six can be enjoyed by itself, but it's best to see them all in sequence. The last episode is the best half-hour I've ever seen on TV.

Absolutely Fabulous: Complete Series 4 (1994)
Average Reviews:

Although all six episodes in this series are good, only three are really exceptional and will go down in "AbFab" history as classics. They are: "Paris" (the girls go on a vacation to Paris- Edina and Saffy actually bond, if you can believe that! It's very touching, almost!); "Small Openings" (Saffy writes a "Mommie Dearest"-esque play that Edina and Pats initially object to, but then later become friends with the people that play them! Patsy, incidentally, is played by a man!); and "Menopause" (Patsy's bones become very brittle and start breaking. Edina and Saffy's reactions when Patsy gives herself a shot of pain medication is BRILLIANTLY HILARIOUS!).
Lots of extras here: the "Mirrorball" special that features all of the main "AbFab" actors in different roles (not as funny as "AbFab" but still well worth your time); great commentary from Jennifer Saunders; photo gallery; outtakes/bloopers, etc. My only complaint, and it's minor, is that the "Who's Who Guide to the stars of AbFab" is a bit hard to read. It looks like handwriting on a piece of graph paper- and even on my gigantic television, it was a bit hard to make all of the writing out. They should have just used a font that was easier to read.
The DVD's come packaged in a plastic case, unlike the last set that came in a cardboard case. The plastic is a lot better and durable than the cardboard, so this is good! The design elements of the case are the same as the last set (it's just a different color), so at least the two sets basically match when they sit on a shelf together. It's so annoying when things in a series aren't designed likewise, so it's nice to see that Warner Bros./BBC Video did this correctly!
Oddity: all of the extras appear on both DVD's. This is not a complaint, I just thought it was sort of strange that they are repeated within the same set.
And no... "The Last Shout" does not appear on this DVD set. The rights to that are owned by a different company, hence the reason why that's not out on DVD yet.
Edina, Patsy, and Saffy are just as fab as ever! Hopefully there will be another series of episodes soon!

I've been waiting impatiently for the second series of this delightful British show (titled Jam and Jerusalem there) to be available on this side of the pond. Although it still hasn't aired here on BBC America, I did catch these episodes in 9-minute chunks on YouTube (certainly not the best way to catch a TV show, but grateful for the access anyway). It's a sweet, funny, and very poignant character study of the quirky women of Clatterford, a small fictional village in Devon. If you've not seen series 1, don't think you're getting another AbFab from the brilliant Jennifer Saunders. This is a very different show. Like series one, it showcases the gentler side of English village life that is sadly passing away.

Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous, Shrek 2), Dawn French (The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Vicar of Dibley), Sue Johnston (The Royle Family, Waking the Dead), Pauline McLynn (Father Ted), Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones\' Diary). Synopsis:The ladies of the Clatterford Women's Guild are back for a second season of side-splitting hilarity! Set in a small west country town, Clatterford follows the continuing exploits of ex-practice nurse Sal Vine and the memorable - and not a little eccentric - members of the local Guild. The Women's Guild - its ideals are to promote truth, justice, tolerance and fellowship - or is it just an excuse for good old gossip? Written by Jennifer Saunders and starring some of the best-loved names in British comedy, Clatterford is a comedy that takes an affectionate look at village life and the empathy and togetherness found in a local community where everyone knows everyone else's business.

I saw the English broadcast of this series and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a heartwarming view of small village life complete with all of the quirky types of characters you might expect. Think Calendar Girls, with its focus on the local Women's Institute (called the Women's Guild in Clatterford). I read one review that aptly compared it to Northern Exposure. The BBC has done the series as much harm as good by promoting it as "by the creator of Absolutely Fabulous," Jennifer Saunders. This is not AbFab and one shouldn't expect anything like that. But Jennifer Saunders continues to be a master at taking common events, situations, or conversations and embellishing them to the brink of absurdity. This series can provide plenty of smiles, but don't expect hilarity. It wasn't written that way.

A hilarious and heartwarming comedy from the creators of Absolutely Fabulous, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley. Welcome to Clatterford, a small town big enough to have a good cross section of people, local shops and a late night convenience store. It's also small enough where everyone knows everybody's business but doesn't talk about it unless asked. Cue the Women's Guild, who aren't afraid to ask. Their topical meetings -- ranging from 'How to solve world poverty' one week to 'the benefits of using marrow in jam' the next -- are the center of village life, like it or not.
