If you're looking at this product page, you've likely seen "Little Britain," so I'll skip reviewing this brilliant and hilarious show and instead address the DVDs themselves. This box set includes all three series of "Little Britain," plus the "Little Britain Live" and "Little Britain Abroad" specials. All of these DVDs are excellently produced and must-haves for fans of this program. The picture and sound are phenomenal, but best of all are the extensive extras.
Each DVD set includes episode commentaries from stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams, deleted scenes, interviews, talk show appearances, behind-the-scenes documentaries, and more. The included documentaries aren't the short featurettes found on many DVDs, but instead feature-length specials (often 60 min. long) that show what goes into creating the show for TV or stage. Particularly entertaining are the documentaries about the making of the live show (on the "Little Britain Live" DVD) and the live show's tour of Australia (on the "Little Britain Abroad" DVD). Walliams and Lucas are endlessly entertaining when not on stage, and there's a consistent stream of guest stars in the documentaries. In short, this set is highly recommended for fans of Emily, Vicky, Ann, Des, Lou, Sebastian and the rest.

After two highly successful seasons and a DVD release in Britain, BBC is finally giving us Americans the home version of the `less refined' nature of the British population. Not all "tea and crumpets" this or "jolly good" that, this comedy sketch series brings us two actors who morph into a myriad of more than one hundred and twenty different characters -- all who would give the Queen heart palpitations and are guaranteed to bring laughter to your living room. Although still foreign to most Americans these characters and their infectious catch phrases are already imbedded in the British lexicon. The whole show relies heavily on these character catch phrases and scenes full of running jokes repeating and trumping themselves in different contexts -- much similar to how real British `characters' act in real life just personified and embellished here by the amazingly diverse Matt Lucas and David Willams. Just reading the lines, situations, descriptions, and catch phrases won't do much for you. It's Matt and David's ability to bring these characters to life that will leave you laughing and repeating the lines with your friends. Walk into a pub, or grammar school, or store in Britain and you'll certainly hear many of them repeated. Share this series with your friends and you'll have a whole new vocabulary to share. A selection of characters follows:
"I want that one."
Not-so-wheelchair-bound Andy, and his long-suffering, volunteer caregiver Lou are the favorite characters of many. Although the formula for their running gag is always predictable, that's the point. Will Andy ever learn Lou knows what he wants better than he does himself? Will Lou ever stop enabling Andy' s strange whims? Will Lou ever discover Andy doesn't need the wheelchair Lou's been pushing all these years? Probably not, and that running gag is the recipe for their relationship and humor. The boys up the ante early on in the running gag department when Lou memorably takes Andy to the public pool.
"Yeahbutnobutyeahbutnobut, Shut up!"
Juvenile delinquent Vicky Pollard whose fast talking and nearly incomprehensible speech patter will have you grabbing for the remote to enable to subtitles option. Unlike Brits who watched this show on BBC, you'll actually be able to find out what she's rambling about. She'd swap her baby for a "boy band" CD and stabs out a cigarette in each episode. Part of the humor is the adults around her still trying to treat her babbling as normal communication and obviously missing some of the outrageous things that come out of her mouth -- things you'll just be able to catch. She's every parent's worst nightmare and is one character you definitely have to experience for yourself.
"I am the only gay in the village."
Dafydd is convinced, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that he is the only gay in his small mining village of Llanddewi Brefi. The most funny part of these sketches aren't the sight gags of Dafydd's rotund body sausaged into the next rubber/mesh/pleather outfit (each one more outrageous than the last) and the village people's indifference to his appearance in them, though you'll definitely laugh out loud at their sight. It's the small mining townspeople's comfort level at saying the most colored, cheeky, and outrageous things to Dafydd while conversing with him. Although everyone in the village tries to identify other gays for Dafydd to socialize with, Dafydd's self-identity is based around being "the only gay in the village" and keeps him isolated from some really good fun.
"The Prime Minister is Gorgeous!"
Government Aide Sebastian who is hopelessly in love with his boss the Prime Minister of Great Britain (expertly played by Anthony Head) gets it's humor from the audience trying to decide if the PM is aware of Sebastian's obvious crush and trying to decipher his dead pan looks. Each time Sebastian goes further over the line, you're convinced a sacking is next on the agenda.
"Eh, eh, ehhh."
Anne the perhaps-not-so-mental patient in the Stephen Speilburg Hospital is under the watchful care of Dr. Morris. While `innocently' destroying everything around him/her, can only utter the phrase eh, eh, ehhh . . . unless talking on the cellphone with friends.
"Mayyyyybe yes, mayyyybe no."
The looney Innkeeper of the Ye Olde Hotel in Scotland and his magic flute. He can never give you a straight answer to your questions but will punctuate his responses with a few puffs on his flute. The humor lies in the fact that everyone in Scotland acts like this, right?
"Dust is low in fat so you can eat as much dust as you like."
Marjorie Dawes is the less than slender leader of the local chapter of Fat Fighters. In what can only be described as misdirected self-loathing she viciously belittles the members of her weight loss group who still keep coming back week after week. How this woman keeps her job is unknown. The acid interaction she has with the ever returning members of the group, especially Mira and Paul, provides the most humor.
Other reoccurring characters don't have catch phrases but still have their running gags nonetheless. Just a selection of these follow:
The schoolteacher at Kelsey Grammar school who confuses his students more than teaching them . . . Royal correspondent Peter Andr' who is in love with Princess Anne and also not right in the head . . . a quick peek behind the writing process will have you wondering how Dame Sally Markham ever became a famous novelist . . . Hypnotist Kenny Craig who is not afraid to use his talents to get whatever he wants. Just be careful not to look into his eyes . . .the former actor Sir Bernard Chumley who eats his invalid sister Kitty's Meals on Wheels. "I didn't push her," he claims even when not asked . . . Edward Grant is the schoolteacher who married one of his former pupils Samantha and still treats her as such. . . Dennis Waterman the pint sized actor who insists on writing and performing his own awful sounding theme tunes. The humor here is in the running "scale of objects" gag . . . Denver Mills the Olympic medalist who should really forget his new career in speech giving and stick to running . . . Des Kaye the ex-children's television star who's not adjusting well to loosing his show and taking a job at the "Do It Yourself" shop.
Other characters include Emily Howard the unconvincing transvestite who "is a lady and likes ladies things" still utters one of the most memorable and more quotable (though sadly not printable here) lines in the show when he's told before an getting an x-ray he must cover his `meat and two vedge' with a lead shield. "But I'm a lady," he protests, "I don't have (insert feminized version of `two vegetables' here). Jason, the bloke who fancies his friend' Gary's grandmother in the worst way is soooo wrong, very wrong, but you're compelled to watch anyway. Most of these skits veer deeply into the PG-13 category so you'd want to pack the little ones off to bed before breaking it out or you'll have you toddler repeating the most embarrassing phrases.
While the intro to each weekly episode is the same visually, it's the different voiceovers narrated by Tom Baker, of Dr. Who fame, that will elicit quite a chuckle. Baker introduces each sketch in a funny voiceover as well and closes each episode after a funny version of the latest, failed world record attempt. Baker's voiceovers are the glue that tie the whole show together and are just as humorous as the skits themselves.
For those of you who like Bonus features, you will not be disappointed here. There is a commentary track for each episode on this disk by Matt and David; surprisingly deadpan, you may miss the humor if you're not listening carefully. Also included are the Pilot Episode, Deleted Scenes, a hysterical television interview with Matt and David, a "Character Playlist" that will allow you to view an edited version of some of your favorite character's sketches in their running order. One warning when selecting "Lou & Andy." You'll have to tell Lou "Yes" twice that you want to "crash the disc" but NOT three times or your disc will indeed crash (it's not permanent). Try it once if you like and then simply eject the disc and reinsert to go back to the main menu. In the "Extras" section on the second disc, you'll get to see what Matt and David were up to prior to this series when you view the "Best of Rock Profiles" -- hilarious non-impressions of famous (and some local British) musical artists. "How to Make a Little Britain" is the behind-the-scenes feature that chronicles the filming of all eight episodes over the time span of 40 days. The "Teenage Cancer Trust Sketches" are fun to watch and the "Radio 5 Interview" will give you more inside scoop. "What Does Britain Mean to You?" is a collection of man-on-the-street interviews with the characters humorously answering the question while poking fun at themselves in the process.

Last of the Summer Wine Review

Last of the Summer Wine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Anyone who has ever watched Open All Hours or Keeping Up Appearances will already be familiar with writer Roy Clarke's distinctive brand of humour, and if you've enjoyed the type of humour in either of these two shows, Last of the Summer Wine is certainly worth checking out. Humour aside, however, this series is somewhat different from the other two. It's overall a very laidback, gentle series filled with some extremely scenic views of the Yorkshire dales and the loveliest theme music of any Britcom. One ought not to expect, therefore, to find a powerhouse (like Arkwright or Hyacinth) leading the show (oh, they are here--and in greater numbers than in the BFS boxed set which contains the earliest episodes--but they're relegated to supporting roles!). Rather, the series revolves around the humorous adolescent antics and "philosophical" musings (if one can call it that) of three carefree, lay-about geriatric men.
Most memorable is the tatty, peg-toothed Compo Simonite (Bill Owen, who sadly died at age 85 of pancreatic cancer in 1999--like most, he was with the show till the very end), who's spent his life on the dole, is the most rangy-tang and mischievous of the lot, and is forever dreaming of his neighbour, Nora Batty--wrinkled stockings and all. Then there is Norman Clegg (Peter Sallis), a man who's terrified of women--which is unfortunate as he is constantly called upon by his neighbour Howard (the epitomy of a hen-pecked husband) to assist Howard in communicating with his "young lady" friend, the man-eating Marina. Lastly is Foggy Dewhurst (Brian Wilde), a humorously regimental (but totally inept) ex-military man, without whom the other two would never do anything and there'd be no show! Wilde, who left the show for a brief period from 1985-90, retired permanently in 1997.
Though series is still in production after more than 30 years, the years from 1990-1997 (the Howard & Marina/Foggy Dewhurst years) were among the strongest for the series. This BBC boxed set, subtitled Vintage 1995, falls within that classic era and includes ten 30-minute episodes (the complete second series of episodes to be filmed during 1995) plus the 60-minute Christmas special entitled "A Leg Up for Christmas."
Special features include "30 Years of Last of the Summer Wine", a 60-minute look back at the show, the characters, how the series came about, the scoring of the music, etc.--even the odd blooper is included. The producer, writer, and many of the actors share their thoughts. Also included are a 6-minute skit entitled "The Funny Side of Christmas" (which dates between 1976-1985) and an enjoyable 30-minute "Tribute to Dame Thora Hird", who was unforgettable as the "motor-vehiclely challenged" Edie Pegden, the battle-axe wife of Wesley (who rarely appeared without his greasy overalls and could always be found tinkering in his shed with something mechanical--usually to a disastrous end!). Sadly, Gordon Wharmby (Wesley) passed away at age 68 in 2002 from lung cancer, whilst Dame Thora died at age 91 in 2003 after suffering a stroke.
This series is a classic example of British character comedy--and what a wealth of characters there are. Apart from the aforementioned, who can forget wily Auntie Wainwright, who sells antiques like a venus flytrap catches flies; or the hilarious antics of blind-as-a-bat Elie (sadly Danny O'Dea also died in 2003 aged 91). From the ladies' coffee mornings, to Compo's amorous advances towards Nora Batty, to Howard's ill-fated clandestine romance with Marina, this is a series our entire family enjoys (it's my dad's favourite). Although we enjoy the current episodes, with the loss of so many memorable characters, the 1995 Vintage hails back to a time when the series was truly at its zenith. One can only hope the BBC will continue to bring more episodes to DVD.

Are You Being Served? The Complete Collection (Series 1-10) 14 vol Review

Are You Being Served The Complete Collection (Series 1-10) 14 vol

Ten series of this classic Britcom were produced between 1973-1985, and all sixty-nine 30-minute episodes, including the black-and-white pilot and the Christmas specials (positioned chronologically in the order originally broadcast), are here in one boxed set.
The series revolves around the staff of Grace Brothers' Department Store--particulary the staff of menswear and ladieswear. The ladies' department is headed by the pompous, air-assuming Mrs. Slocombe (Mollie Sugden). She's a bit of a man eater (or would be could she get her hands on one!) and is forever fretting about Tiddles, her pussy--cat that is! Her junior is sexy Miss Brahms (Wendy Richard), who is constantly fighting off the advances of the menswear junior, Mr. Lucas (Trevor Bannister, who left the show after series seven due to a scheduling conflict). From series eight on, Mr. Spooner (Mike Berry--a former singer) takes over as the new menswear junior, flirting with Miss Brahms and insulting Mrs. Slocombe at every opportunity! The menswear department is headed by curmudgeonly old Mr. Grainger (Arthur Brough, who died (aged 73) following series five). In between him and Mr. Lucas is the flamboyant Mr. Humphreys (John Inman). With his mincing gait, outrageous costumes, and familiar cry of "I'm free," he's my personal favourite--though the whole cast really is terrific!
Of course one cannot forget the subtly lecherous floorwalker, Captain Peacock, a pompous ex-army officer (or so he claims). One gets a sense that this is probably the only position of authority he's ever had, and he milks it for all its worth, barking orders at his underlings at every opportunity. His favourite target is the rough, bawdy maintenance man, Mr. Mash (replaced by Mr. Harman in the fourth series), a militant trade unionist who loves to goad Cpt. Peacock (and who probably makes more money than Peacock does too!). Of the four actors who temporarily took over the role of department head following Brough's death, my favourite is Alfie Bass, who played shrewd Mr. Goldberg, himself an ex-army man, and from whom we glean a lot more about Corporal--I mean Captain--Peacock than Peacock would care to have known!
Then there is Mr. Rumbold, the bald-pated, jug-eared department manager (like Mollie Sugden, Nicholas Smith was very good-natured in allowing his physical appearance to be the basis of so much humour!). Finally, there is Young Mr. Grace, the elderly and extremely frail but hilariously lustful store owner (Harold Bennett, who died of a heart attack in 1981 following series eight, was 74 when the series began!).
There are two discs of DVD extras, the first of which consists of three 30-minute profiles (John Inman (1999), Mollie Sugden (1998), and Wendy Richard (2001)), each of which provides a brief bio, snippets from the various television productions in which the actor has been involved, and remembrances from fellow actors. The final feature is "Are You Being Confused?", a text-based dictionary of British slang. The second disc contains two features which have appeared as PBS specials over the years: Firstly, there is the 75-minute "The Best of Are You Being Served?", which is hosted by Mr. Humphreys and his mother (both played by John Inman, of course!), and which contains snippets of some of the funniest moments in the series. Secondly is the lovely 90-minute profile of Mollie Sugden (2002), which also contains snippets from the shows she's been in and remembrances from fellow actors, yet it doesn't entirely duplicate the other profile. Also included is the first episode of the 1992 sequel, "Are You Being Served? Again!".
With scripts liberally laced with double entendres, innuendos and puns, and a cast of characters made all the more memorable by some of the most capable actors in British comedy, this is character comedy at its best--a real Britcom classic!

Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 1977 (2008)
Average Reviews:

Once again we get another "series" of antics from our favorite boys from Yorkshire.
This time we get series 4 which appears to indicate Warner/BBC has gotten the message that we want all the series released in order. Series 4 has 8 episodes, 6 of which aired in 1977 and 2 in 1978.
Here is the episode list along with the original air date:
Episode 1: Ferret Come Home - 9 November 1977
Episode 2: Getting on Sydney's Wire - 16 November 1977
Episode 3: Jubilee - 23 November 1977
Episode 4: Flower Power Cut - 30 November 1977
Episode 5: Who Made a Bit of Splash in Wales, Then? - 7 December 1977
Episode 6: Greenfingers - 14 December 1977
Episode 7: A Merry Heatwave - 1 January 1978
Episode 8: The Bandit from Stoke-On-Trent - 4 January 1978
The sole reported "Special Feature" will be:
A rare 1977 interview with show Creator/Writer Roy Clarke.
Unfortunately, this series does *not* include the episode "Small Tune on a Penny Wassail" which aired on 26 December 1978. This is a "Christmas Special" which are not typically considered part of a series by the BBC. Hopefully we'll see this episode on a "Christmas Specials" release.
The picturesque Pennine village of Holmfirth in the Yorkshire Dales is the setting for the antics of our aging delinquents and their oddball friends and fellow townspeople. Miles and miles of unspoilt moorland, and a breath-taking backdrop to the adventures of Compo, Clegg, Foggy.
As I've mentioned before, if you've not seen any of the episodes before don't be suprised if you are lukewarm to the program upon first viewing. This is a show that grows on you with each episode.
Now that Warner/BBC has blessed us with the next series I have but one request. Let's get on with it! With 6 months between series it will take another 12 years to get it all released! I, for one, do not wish to wait that long!
OK... I have 2 requests. The 2nd is: Stop pricing these short 6-10 episode series the same as series containing 24-32 episodes. This gross overpricing is typical of almost *all* BBC releases.

Are You Being Served? Collection 2 (Series 6-10) Review

Are You Being Served Collection 2 (Series 6-10)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those, like myself, whose quest was to see every episode of AYBS? on PBS only to have a time change, slot change, or telethon get in the way, will be relieved to finally have all 69 episodes of this hilarious series in two convenient box sets to watch anytime (take that, PBS). Yes, in this second box set Mr. Grainger is replaced by a string of, mostly unmemorable, characters, and Mr. Lucas will eventually be replaced by the more mean-spirited and less tactful Mr. Spooner; however, there are still many excellent episodes in the last half of the series, including some personal favorites. In "Grounds for Divorce" it seems almost every female member of Grace Brothers is enamored with Captain Peacock. "The Erotic Dreams of Mrs. Slocomb" are about you know who. "The Hero" with Capt. Peacock developing a boil on his bum is another of my favorites. It also includes Trevor Bannister's last episode "The Punch and Judy Affair" which, although I find to be boring and repetitive, is a fan favorite.
"The Best of..." extra was disappointing. I thought John Inman would provide commentary to AYBS? clips. Actually, it is just a bunch of random clips (some quite long) that any fan of AYBS? has seen many times before. The piece on Molly Sugden looked as if it was going to be the same clip show but, fortunately, ends up with more interviews with actors and a look at Sugden's life in her own words which makes for a very welcomed extra. Grace and Favour was a cute series and I hope that the other episodes will be released on DVD soon. Yes, if you are only going to buy one set, buy the first but, if you're going to own the first, why not the second as well?

Steohanie Cole is a national treasure. She is adept at drama (watch Tenko) as with comedy. She and Grahame Crowden have created the perfect odd couple of the geratrics generation.
While most seniors go gently into the night, not Tom and Diana. They are not going to let the establishment (The Idiot Baines) push them around because they are old.
Tom and Diana have been battling the establishment and Harvey Baines for two series and now for the third round. Series 3 contains the following 10 episodes and a Christmas special:
The Funeral - The Vicar is suffering from burn-out and cannot even get through a funeral. So he goes to Bayview to get some rest but Tom has an idea to help. Tom points his alcoholic/oversexed daughter-in-law Marion his way. But Marion and Vicar run together.
Two Nasty Kids - Geoffrey decides to run after Marion and presses Tom and Diana into babysitting his two kids (Tom's grandchildren).
Looking for Work - Diana decides to look for a job. But at her age, it is easier said than done.
Harvey's Fiancee - Harvey finds Ms. Right (Lucy) and wants to intoduce her to Mother. But Tom and Diana decide it would be fun to pretend to be Harvey's parents. After they run off Lucy, Harvey has Jane pretend to be his fiancee when Mother arrives.
The Estate Agent - Harvey gets entangled with a beautiful estate agent, who turns out to be even more unscrupulous than Harvey. It takes the dynamic geriatric duo to uncover her evil plot.
Scandal - Following a wild wake, Diana wakes up in Tom's bed.
Sabotage - When Harvey "borrows" the money from the vacation fund for his new pet project, it is up to Tom and Diana to correct this.
Politics - Diana is bored, so she puts herself up for counsel. Harvey also decides to run for the same office. And Tom decides it would be fun to make it three.
Sleeping Pills - Diana collapses and is rushed to the hospital. She thinks she is dying and wants to do it on her terms.
Great Aunt Diana - Tom and Diana hijack a bus (the driver would not let them in early even though it is raining.) Diana's niece Sarah is pregnant.
Christmas at Bayview - This is the show's first Christmas special.
This show is extremely popular on PBS. Thank-you BBC for this wonderful show. No US network would have the guts to make this show.
Three series down one to go!!

If you liked the first series of "Little Britain", you can buy this one without hesitation. As of early May 2006, it hasn't been released in the US yet, so when I received a british copy as a gift, I ran out and bought a region-free DVD player just so I could watch it !
There are a few more wacky characters this time around, and the existing ones are more outrageous than ever. Some of the skits are so un-politically correct, it would never fly in the U.S, which probably makes it even more fun to watch.
If you go to your bank to apply for a loan, you'll probably have a smile on your face. " Computer says no".

Little Britain is the reigning king of UK comedy. Its quirky, off-kilter characters have quickly become British national treasures, garnering numerous accolades, including three BAFTAs (UK equivalent to Emmys) and double gold at the prestigious Rose d'Or of Lucerne (Europe's highest comedy award). With the second season comes a host of new characters as well as returning favorites. Unconvincing transvestite Emily Howard has a new friend, Vicky Pollard is still butchering the English language; and an assortment of new oddities are on exhibit, including Bubbles De Vere, Carol "Computer Says No" Beer and and Harvey Pincher, who has an unusually strong attraction to his mother. transvestite. Then there's Andy, sitting all day in his wheelchair painstakingly looked after by Lou, who has no idea his friend can walk. This is the live version of Little Britain that played on stages around the UK, which means that the performances were uncensored, but not over the top. All of the favorite skits are represented including a cameo from Anthony Head as the Prime Minister. What is more interesting I found was the parallel story of costar David Walliams' training during the stage tour for an attempt to swim the English Channel for charity and his subsequent successfuly attempt. The DVD is well done with a blend of on-stage performances, off-stage background, and David's training.

Dylan Moran is brilliant. The perfect antidote to those oh, so perfect american sitcoms filled with bright and shiny people. You know, the ones with impossibly white teeth who never look rumpled or stinky or real. Moving walls, thongs, and summertime girlfriends...this one's got it all. You will need your pause button as you'll laugh right through the next jokes!

The foul tempered and wildly eccentric bookshop owner Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) is back for a second season. Bernard's devotion to the twin pleasures of drunkenness and willful antagonism deepens and enriches both his life and that of Manny (Bill Bailey), his assistant. Bearded, gentle, sweet and good, Manny is everything that Bernard isn't and is punished by Bernard relentlessly just for the crime of existing. They depend on each other for meaning as Fran (Tamsin Greig), their oldest friend, depends on them for distraction.DVD Features:Audio CommentaryOtherOuttakesPhoto gallery

One Foot in the Grave: Season 5 (2008) Review

One Foot in the Grave: Season 5 (2008)
Average Reviews:

If you're considering Season 5, then you already know what a great show this is. I just felt the need to negate another very misleading review. Firstly, the comedy is very, very broad (not dry) yet all reasonable in context. The storylines are interwoven so brilliantly that everything, perversely, makes sense. Secondly, Victor is not a grumpy old man; he's actually a lovely, pleasant man who's constantly baffled and frustrated by an inconsiderate, vulgar world; his mistake is that, instead of ignoring this world, he chooses to confront it in hopes of making change. Thirdly, this series is most certainly not especially for older people. I began watching it just after it began. I wasn't old then, and I'm not even middle-aged now. This is a series for people who love farce and appreciate great writing and acting. And unlike so many comedies, you really won't see what's coming until it's there and you're howling with laughter. Great, great, great show.

The winner of an International Emmy(R) Award for Best Comedy Program, The Vicar of Dibley is one of the most popular series ever produced by the BBC. It boasts the brilliant comic writing of Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Bridget Jones's Diary) and a gifted ensemble cast led by Dawn French of the hilarious comedy duo, French and Saunders. The sleepy village of Dibley was blindsided back in 1994 by the arrival of its new vicar -- who had the audacity to be a woman! Over the twelve ensuing years -- with the help of a sharp wit, a double dose of double entendre and a healthy supply of chocolate -- she gradually won the hearts of even the crustiest of the town's eccentric inhabitants. This collection contains every episode ever created of this brilliant comedy series, and it promises to warm your heart, while keeping you in fits of hysteria along the way!DVD Features:DocumentaryFeaturetteOther

Little Britain - The Complete Third Series (2004) Review

Little Britain - The Complete Third Series (2004)

Let me preface my review by saying that I'm a die-hard fan of "Little Britain." However, I will be as unbiased as possible in my review of this DVD.
I have to admit that I do agree with people's criticism that Season 3 of "LB" was not as funny as the previous 2. I didn't find the new characters they added terribly amusing, and sketches with the old favorites do tend to get a little repetitive. I've seen the episodes on BBC America, but I'm looking forward to hearing the episode commentary and deleted scenes. Having said that, I still think that there's enough laughs, giggles, and smiles in each episode to warrant purchasing this DVD. I'd kind of only recommend it for fans and purists... but please know that Matt Lucas and David Walliams' lesser work is still a million times funnier than a lot of drivel that we get here in the US.
Also, as for extras, that's a real enticement to get this DVD. UK fans were disappointed because they were all previously seen television clips. But they're treats and rarities for us US fans. Matt and David never disappoint when they appear on talk shows and such, so that's guaranteed laughs for you too! All in all, if you're a fan and you're considering getting this for yourself or a friend... I'd say "Computer says yes." :)

Black Books - The Complete First Series (2001) Review

Black Books - The Complete First Series (2001)
Average Reviews:

Black Books is a charming, absurdist situation comedy series set in a bookshop. "Charming," you ask? "The main character is a nasty, morose, chain-smoking drunk with a neurotic for a best friend and a bearded simpleton for an employee." Ah, but what's what makes it such a gem of writing and acting.
Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey met during the Edinburgh Fringe and were the top two contenders for the Perrier Prize. Moran came out on top, but remembered Bailey a few years later when he was offered his own show. Moran's character of an ill-tempered grouch is matched perfectly by Bailey's good-hearted goof, and their chemistry as Bernard and Manny is what makes Black Books such enjoyable viewing. Tamsin Grieg is a good comic actress, but I found Fran Katzenjammer to be a little grating at times. Her character does develop more in subsequent seasons, so don't discount her performance.
Fans of Father Ted, Spaced, BlackAdder, and Little Britain should adore this show, and if I have to explain that any further then you should go back to watching "According To Jim".
It's rare to find comedies that are as intelligent as funny, and Black Books is a prime example of such shows. Of course it'd never take off in America, but I thought the same thing about The Office. Please, please, please do not remake this as an American sit-com.
For reasons unknown, Comedy Central used to run this early Sunday mornings back in 2001 before dropping it from the roster. I had only caught two episodes before and was distraught at its departure. Cue to last year and its Region 1 release and my frabjous rapture.
Bring on season Two (and Three...)

Black Books is a second-hand bookshop in London run by an Irishman named Bernard Black. He is probably the planet's worst-suited person to run such an establishment: he makes no effort to sell, closes at strange hours on a whim, is in a perpetual alcoholic stupor, abhors his customers (sometimes physically abusing them) and is often comatose at his desk. Help comes in the lumpy shape of Manny Bianco, a hairy, bumbling individual who (almost by osmosis) becomes Bernard's assistant. Manny is not exactly great at the job either but he is a million times better than Bernard. Next door is Fran, an anxious, frustrated woman who runs a sort of new-age shop selling the most unlikely bits of arty junk. Fran is friends with Bernard and, through him, with Manny; together the trio become embroiled in escapades that are sometimes extreme or violent or fantastically ludicrous, and always bizarre.

Clatterford: The Complete Season Two (2009) Review

Clatterford: The Complete Season Two (2009)

I've been waiting impatiently for the second series of this delightful British show (titled Jam and Jerusalem there) to be available on this side of the pond. Although it still hasn't aired here on BBC America, I did catch these episodes in 9-minute chunks on YouTube (certainly not the best way to catch a TV show, but grateful for the access anyway). It's a sweet, funny, and very poignant character study of the quirky women of Clatterford, a small fictional village in Devon. If you've not seen series 1, don't think you're getting another AbFab from the brilliant Jennifer Saunders. This is a very different show. Like series one, it showcases the gentler side of English village life that is sadly passing away.

Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous, Shrek 2), Dawn French (The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Vicar of Dibley), Sue Johnston (The Royle Family, Waking the Dead), Pauline McLynn (Father Ted), Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones\' Diary). Synopsis:The ladies of the Clatterford Women's Guild are back for a second season of side-splitting hilarity! Set in a small west country town, Clatterford follows the continuing exploits of ex-practice nurse Sal Vine and the memorable - and not a little eccentric - members of the local Guild. The Women's Guild - its ideals are to promote truth, justice, tolerance and fellowship - or is it just an excuse for good old gossip? Written by Jennifer Saunders and starring some of the best-loved names in British comedy, Clatterford is a comedy that takes an affectionate look at village life and the empathy and togetherness found in a local community where everyone knows everyone else's business.

I've written about this series several times and will repeat some of my previous comments on the show in general.
Don't be surprised if you are lukewarm to LOTSW on first viewing. This show grows on you over time. The first time I saw LOTSW I was underwhelmed... it was slow and seemed almost without a plot. But after watching a few more episodes I was hooked!
This is a better value than the previous sets as we get 2(!) series (6th and 7th) this time out for a total of 13 episodes!
From the press release:
"Britain's oldest-if not wisest-adolescents and incorrigible senior citizens uncork another barrel full of laughs as their ongoing antics continue to corrupt the picturesque town of Holmfirth. Compo (Bill Owen), Clegg (Peter Sallis, Wallace & Gromit) and Foggy (Brian Wilde) enjoy more merry, misguided adventures in the longest-running series on Earth! From the creator of Keeping Up Appearances."
Episodes this time are:
Season 6

Original Air Date--4 January 1982
Episode 2: Car and Garter
Original Air Date--11 January 1982
Episode 3: The Odd Dog Men

Episode 5: One of the Last Few Places Unexplored by Man
Original Air Date--1 February 1982
Episode 6: Serenade for Tight Jeans and Metal Detector
Original Air Date--8 February 1982
Episode 7: From Wellies to Wet Suit
Original Air Date--15 February 1982
Season 7
Episode 1: The Frozen Turkey Man
Original Air Date--30 January 1983
Episode 2: The White Man's Grave
Original Air Date--6 February 1983
Episode 3: The Waist Land
Original Air Date--13 February 1983
Episode 4: Cheering Up Ludovic
Original Air Date--20 February 1983
Episode 5: The Three Astaires
Original Air Date--27 February 1983
Episode 6: The Arts of Concealment
Original Air Date--6 March 1983
Once again the "Christmas Special" episodes are *not* include. I don't understand this mentality. Even if they are *not* in continuity release them in airing order! Oh, well... At least the ones from the early series are currently available on Last of the Summer Wine: Christmas Specials 1978-1982. This prior release appears to have 1 of the 2 which *should* have appeared on this set.
I maintain my plea to Warner/BBC:
Get on with it! At the current release rate of 2 series per year we'll see the successor to Blu-ray come to market before all series are out on standard DVD! For a program with a over 30 year run, 2 per year is entirely too slow a release rate!
