Standard Operating Procedure Review

Standard Operating Procedure
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Representatives for film director Errol Morris told me during pre-production that "Standard Operating Procedure" would be the very best documentary on the abuses of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib - the one that would tell the whole truth.
I had pinned great hope on that. It didn't turn out that way.

My perspective on the Abu Ghraib scandal came from spending from September 2003 to February 2004 at the Iraq prison as a sergeant in Army Intelligence. Working the 8 p.m.-to- 8 a.m. night shift, it was impossible not to notice who was directing the operation. And I shared all this with Morris.

But now I've seen the film and I'm disappointed. Morris does little to get to the bottom of what happened. He muddies already opaque waters regarding who was actually responsible for the abuse of prisoners.

The film focuses on the awful photos, the people in them and those who took them. This perspective plays right into the hands of the cover-up artists. It perpetuates the myth that the abuses are rightfully laid at the feet of those impressionable, but very human, young soldiers.

Morris should have been looking up the chain of command; at the civilian and military officials actually responsible for ordering these Military Police Reservists to rough up prisoners.

A no-holds-barred documentary? Give me a break.

Finally, the Whole Truth!

I was first put into contact with the makers of "SOP" while I was still in the Army. From the beginning, I was told this was going to be a huge project with the production support of Sony Pictures Entertainment; and that Morris, who had won an Oscar with his documentary, "The Fog of War," would be at the helm.

This was to be the breakthrough investigation into what really happened at Abu Ghraib, who was responsible for the abuse and why it was ordered - the project that really got people's attention, going where previous investigators and media had feared to tread.

Call me gullible but, believing this was to be a groundbreaking work, I fully cooperated with Morris. I assisted him in his quest for documents, videos, photos, notes and helped him contact fellow soldiers who were at Abu Ghraib and knew what happened.

When I was discharged from the Army in October 2006, I went to Boston for a two-day interview.

Morris asked me to sign several contracts before and after the interviews, and I did as he asked without paying much attention to them. I do remember however, that in one contract Morris agreed to pay me one dollar.

In any event, I never got the dollar, but was reminded of this last week when I read in the New York Times that others got paychecks for their participation.

I have never asked for or taken money for media interviews. To me, that undermines the process and trivializes the importance of the issues of torture and prisoner mistreatment and their meaning for the moral atmosphere in our country as a whole.

When the film was finished, Morris told me he had intended to use some of the footage from my two days of interviews and the materials I provided, but decided in the end to "narrowly focus" on the Military Police. This, of course, is what so many others have done and is in the worst tradition of a Nixon-style "modified, limited hangout."

Chain of Command?

Here's the oddest thing: Even though Morris's lens is trained on the Military Police, he does find room for a civilian interrogator, Tim Dugan, who worked at Abu Ghraib for CACI, a contractor factory for civilian interrogators.

I witnessed for myself how civilian personnel, like Dugan, corrupted the military. Indeed, they were the genesis of the break from conventional interrogation techniques into what Vice President Dick Cheney hinted at when he spoke of the "dark side" of intelligence.

It was they who ordered the Military Police and some of my own unit's Military Intelligence soldiers to "soften" the detainees for interrogation, and encouraged the behavior depicted in the photographs. I know; I was there. And, of course, I told Errol Morris.

So I was surprised, to say the least, to see Morris giving Dugan a place to contend that, essentially, the abuses were all the military's fault.

Odd indeed. Even Maj. Gen. George Fay, whose investigation of Abu Ghraib left much to be desired, reported the pernicious effect civilian interrogators had on the impressionable and inexperienced soldiers.

Fay reported, for example that Daniel Johnson, one of Dugan's CACI interrogator colleagues, whom I knew at Abu Ghraib, was using Spc. Charles Graner as "muscle" for his interrogations.

And yet, Morris describes Dugan as "remarkable." Remarkable, indeed, Errol.

Did no one tell you that CACI, Dugan and several of his fellow interrogators were sued by their victims in Abu Ghraib, seeking to hold them accountable for their behavior?

In the civil case brought by the Center for Constitutional Rights on behalf of Abu Ghraib prisoners, the lawsuit implicates Dugan in the abuse.

"CACI interrogator Timothy Dugan also tortured plaintiffs and other prisoners," the lawsuit alleges. "For example, he physically dragged handcuffed plaintiffs and other prisoners along the ground to inflict pain on them. He struck and beat plaintiffs and other prisoners. He bragged to a non-conspirator about scaring a prisoner with threats to such a degree that the prisoner vomited.

"When a young non-conspirator directed him to cease the torture and comply [with] Army Field Manual 34-52, Dugan scoffed at his youth and refused to follow the direction."

The lawsuit further alleges that Dugan took part in a CACI cover-up of when a detainee died by going through "the charade of interrogating a prisoner who was already dead as part of the conspiracy's efforts to conceal a murder." Dugan is accused, too, of threatening a fellow CACI employee who talked to investigators.

CACI has denounced the lawsuit as baseless, and the individual defendants were dismissed out on a technicality. However, on Nov. 6, 2007, U.S. District Court Judge James Robertson in Washington denied CACI's motion for summary judgment and ordered a jury trial against CACI.

A criminal investigation also is pending in the Eastern District of Virginia concerning some of the CACI employees.

In "SOP," Dugan presents himself as a whistleblower who tried to stop the abuses. He claims that he reported to his "section sergeant" that two Army female interrogators were stripping detainees naked as an interrogation technique, and how shocked he was to see this.

Dugan claims he got the brush-off; was told not to get involved. So who was this "section sergeant?" And is he/she above the law?

Why did Dugan not offer himself as a witness in any of the various investigations? Where has he been if he felt then the way he now says he did? Again, why sport the good-guy badge now?

I came away with the impression that Morris was unprepared for the interview and was being taken for a ride.

CACI's Defense

For obvious reasons, CACI has gone to extraordinary lengths to separate itself from the horrors of Abu Ghraib, arguing that the military alone was at fault.

CACI recently announced the release of a book, Our Good Name: A Company's Fight To Defend Its Honor And Get The Truth About Abu Ghraib.

CACI contends strongly that its interrogators adhered to the military chain of command, something it has been feverishly trying to establish in the lawsuits against it.

And so, the behavior captured in the photos? That was the military's responsibility, not CACI's.

That is not what I observed from my ringside seat.

I told Morris that the reality was that the civilian contractors paid little heed to the military chain of command, and that they were the ones actually running the show. That didn't make it into the final version of "SOP."

Even though it is now an established fact that between 70 to 90 percent of detainees at Abu Ghraib were completely innocent, something I learned directly on site, Dugan implies that the harsh interrogation practices applied there were legitimate - except of course for the failings of the military.

This myth-making is intended to hold CACI harmless and help it maintain its very lucrative government contracts. CACI International had $1.6 billion in revenues in 2005. Folks have always told me it all has to do with money; I suppose they're right.

But Congress should be asking some simple questions. It should start by asking why civilian contractors are being employed in connection with the interrogation of persons under detention in wartime, a function which previously has been entirely in the hands of the uniformed military?

This could yield some interesting answers. Indeed, evasion of military rules and discipline as well as avoidance of congressional oversight might be at the heart of the answers.

Morris takes pride in calling "SOP" a horror movie and - with the mood music and the needless slow-motion reenactments - he makes sure of that.

However, "SOP" does little more than humanize some of the "bad apples" (a good thing, I suppose), while gratuitously absolving the civilian interrogators actually responsible for fouling those apples.

But, wait. Abu Ghraib is not primarily about Military Police - or civilian interrogators. It is about the many thousands of wrongfully detained Iraqis - many of them abused, tortured and even killed. It is also about their...Read more›

Bitch Slap (Unrated) (2009) Review

Bitch Slap (Unrated) (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Oh yes, "Bitch Slap" is everything you think it is. Girls. Guns. Catfights. Explosions. Lesbian romances. A story of bad guys, booty, alliances, betrayals, and secrets. It's being billed as, "a post-modern, thinking man's throwback to the B movie/exploitation films of the 1950s - 70s," but the truth is it gives us little to think about, and I'm hard pressed to say that it reexamines modern assumptions of culture, identity, and language. It does, however, open with a Joseph Conrad quote: "The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness." We see the word "men" and automatically think it's a blatant anti-male message. But by the end of the film, it's made abundantly clear that women are just capable of being wicked. Equality through evil. Funny.
This movie is irredeemably enjoyable, preposterous in both its story and its characters yet magnetic as a satire disguised as a schlocky male fantasy. It tells the story of three bad girls, all smoking hot, who find themselves in a plot to extort diamonds and weapons from an underworld kingpin, whose identity is a secret. The redhead is Hel, presumably short for Helen (Erin Cummings); she seems to be the leader of the group, tough but levelheaded, able to see the big picture and plan accordingly. The blonde is Camero (America Olivo), an oversexed hothead who's on medication. She's one of those people that hates everyone and is mad about everything, and has the dialogue to prove it. The brunette is a stripper named Trixie (Julia Voth), always upset, always overwhelmed, always wanting to play by the rules.
Every opportunity is taken to flaunt their feminine assets, and boy, do they have them - a basic shot is a slow-motion close-up of heaving breasts and deep cleavage, although some time is set aside for bare legs. There's never a moment when they aren't wearing high heels or don't have makeup painted on their faces. And then there are times when they pause to do a little manual labor, such as digging in the middle of the desert. My, but it's burning hot, and ... is that a bucket of water sitting there? Maybe they should splash each other playfully in order to stay cool. Things will heat back up later on, when Trixie and Hel discover that their feelings for one another are deeper than they first imagined. That's about when the situation goes completely out of control. Loyalties change. Identities are revealed. People get shot. Things blow up. And did I mention the catfights?
Intertwined with this is a ridiculous but somehow appropriate subplot about a notorious criminal known only as Pinky, never dealt with directly and never seen but fabled to be the most dangerous criminal mastermind who ever lived. When Trixie innocently brings up the subject, Hel and Camero speak in the same tones as someone telling a ghost story around a campfire. "Many believe Pinky's a phantom," says Camero. "Others think he sold his soul to the devil. I think he IS the devil." Maybe so; a flashback sequence shows a silhouetted figure going nuts with what appear to be samurai swords, used to decapitate people left and right. Do we ever discover what Pinky looks like? With such gorgeous women displayed on the big screen, can you honestly say that you care?
When this movie is not going out of its way to be sexy, then it's being incredibly goofy. Take Olivo, for example; the angrier she gets, the funnier she becomes, not only because she spews unbelievably inane profanity, but also because her character is the most aggressive. And just wait until you hear of her tryst with a sideshow contortionist. Let's also consider the director, Rick Jacobson; he's currently at work on the new "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" television series and has been involved with "She Spies," "Cleopatra 2525," "Batwatch," "La Femme Nikita," "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," and "Xena: Warrior Princess." The last two are noteworthy because Kevin Sorbo, Lucy Lawless, and Renée O'Connor all have cameos in "Bitch Slap." Or maybe they aren't noteworthy at all. Whatever.
This movie is, essentially, a cross between an erotic photo shoot and a silly crime caper, one that has been fed into a low-tech special effects mill. And I suppose that's why I had fun watching it. While I ultimately have no good reason for recommending it, you have to admit, there is something infectious about a movie that actively tries to be bad. I'm reminded of an often repeated Pauline Kael quote: "Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash, we have very little reason to be interested in them." "Bitch Slap" is, indeed, great trash, projected up on the screen in all its violent, foulmouthed, double-D glory. Fellas, this is your lucky day.

A modern throwback to the "B" movie exploitation films of the 50's-70's, mixing beautiful women, fast cars, big guns, nasty tongues, outrageous action, and jaw-dropping eye candy. The movie follows three bad girls, a down-and-out stripper, a drug running killer, and a corporate power broker as they arrive at a remote desert hideaway to extort massive booty from an underworld kingpin.

Cruel Intentions 2 (2001) Review

Cruel Intentions 2 (2001)
Average Reviews:

Now, I liked the first CRUEL INTENTIONS starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (it was entertaining in a sick, twisted kind of way, and the production values were great), but I didn't even know they made a sequel until I saw this on cable! Well, after watching it, now I know why I've heard nothing about it. This was apparently supposed to be a television series called "Manchester Prep", but it's clear why it was rejected -- the subject matter is just too risque. There's more gratuitous nudity and sexual innuendo in Cruel Intentions 2 than in the original film.
This movie stunk worse than a New York subway car in August without any air conditioning. You thought the lesbian kiss scene in the first movie was a little over the top? Man, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Cruel Intentions 2 is really nothing but a soft-porn B-movie. The first movie was a "modern retelling" of the "classic" story Dangerous Liaisons. Cruel Intentions 2 is a "prequel" that leaves almost no taboo unexplored. Since this is a "family" site, I will not go into any graphic detail here. Suffice it to say that virgin eyes should not behold what transpires in this movie (Scenes like an innocent freshman girl getting aroused while learning to ride a horse, twins in a shower, Valmont's stepmother giving him a massage...you get the idea).
Anyway, consider this a public service announcement: beware if you turn on your tv and are flipping through the cable channels and you come across a little movie called CRUEL INTENTIONS 2. Or if you see this on your videostore shelf. Or if you were thinking of buying this film. The production values and the acting and the story are nowhere near as good as the original. You might find some of the nudity and erotic content enjoyable if you're looking for that sort of thing... ...You have been warned.

21 Jump Street: Season Two Review

21 Jump Street: Season Two
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The second season of this FOX action series continued to blend pop and politics together in an irresistible mix. People who were tuning in to drool over Johnny Depp (among others) may have subsequently had no idea they were getting a dose of `issues'. Building on the success of last season, this series talked about issues much more directly than the standard after school special.
"Two for the road" has the Jump Street squad confront the dilemma of what to do when their superior officer, Adam Fuller, is arrested for drunk driving during the investigation of a counterfeit drivers license ring. Because these cops are also supposed to have a clearly defined sense of right and wrong, they are visibly shaken by such a development inside their own tight knit group. Hinting at his own (then-upcoming) 90's issue-laden series, Jason Priestly guest stars in this episode.
"Honor Bound" is a junior grade foreshadowing of the gays in the military debate of the early 1990's. Penhall and Hansen go undercover at a military academy after the cadets are suspected of killing homosexuals. Their interpretation of the military code of honor subsequently prevents many cadets at this school from being open with the Jump Street program cops about what has happened. The cops are troubled by this development, but many of the cadets honestly had internalized their own silence as the normal and respectable thing.
Another riveting emotional storyline comes from Christmas in Saigon, when Harry Ioki is revealed to be working under an illegal alias which he used to escape from Vietnam. Based on the real life experiences of actor Dustin Ngyuen, this storyline asked viewers to consider that illegal immigrants were actually friends and coworkers. This issue remains amazingly relevant today.
One episode which does not translate well into 21st century America is "A big disease with a little name". Hansen must protect a youth with AIDS from being harassed by ignorant and scared peers. It is difficult to explain to many present-day elementary school and junior high school students that public schools across the country had once attempted to bar people with AIDS, the national cases of Ryan White and Ricky Ray undoubtedly had helped to influence this storyline.
Overall, this is another excellent season which would be a good purchase for the 1980's and/or Depp aficionado on your list.

Devil's Diary (2007) Review

Devil's Diary (2007)
Average Reviews:

I feel the need to see all Alexz Johnson movies - she's one of my favorite actresses.
This one was a bit off in places - I found it amusing that the "popular" crowd was stereotypically cheerleaders and jocks again, but even funnier were the awkward nun-like cheerleader uniforms.
Alexz's character was by far the most likable because she is who she is and doesn't care what anyone else thinks. Her best friend is different and takes criticism from other students that have clear faults themselves, very hard. Not that anyone would blame her. She finds a diary in the cemeary and starts writing...soon after, the things she writes that she wished would happen DO happen. And it IS funny. Then the "popular girls" eavesdrop and find out what she's doing as Dominique (Alexz) gets worried about the journal making her friend dark and evil little by little. The journal gets stolen and carnage ensues as it travels to more ambitious aka more evil hands.
The ending "six weeks later" is a little strange and doesn't explain alot - there were others that saw what happened and knew about the book, but it seems Dom is on her own.
I wouldn't mind a sequel starring Alexz again, but it's probably not likely...
Some of the things that happen are a little - disturbing and extreme for a "Lifetime" movie, and pranks escalate to gruesome death pretty fast. Not recommended for kids.

The Queen's Sister (2006) Review

The Queen's Sister (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Queen's Sister," which had it's American debut on BBC America, tells the story of Princess Margaret. It's a fascinating, yet somewhat uneven, portrait of a royal we don't hear much about anymore. Marginalized by circumstance, she never really had a significant role to play within the framework of the Royal family. So by boredom, rebellion and/or greedy indifference--she began an unconventional lifestyle (for a Royal anyway) revolving around men and partying. Becoming a social celebrity of sorts, she sought acceptance anyway that she could get it and an acknowledgment of her status.
"The Queen's Sister" is at it's most effective when dealing with Margaret's internal struggles. Far from being a standard biopic, it is more of a psychological profile. And when depicting Margaret's search for purpose and worth, it has some nicely poignant moments. Even though she comes across unflatteringly on many occasions, there are times when we clearly see the girl beneath the title. The tone of the film, though, seesaws rather precariously between ribald comedy and quiet despair. This shifting focus does lessen the overall impact of the film, but it's never uninteresting.
The production benefits with a tremendous, vital performance by Lucy Cohu. Spanning 20 years of Margaret's life, it's a showy and robust showcase for Cohu's acting chops. The film is well presented and well done from a technical standpoint. I'm not so convinced that historical accuracy, however, was a top priority to the filmmakers. Nevertheless, I recommend the film to those interested in the Royals--it's a different perspective. And I give a big thumbs up to Cohu who holds everything together with a masterful and complicated performance. KGHarris, 11/06.

Coupling - The Complete Seasons 1-4 (2001)

Serious Coupling fans will NOT be disappointed with this attractively packaged box set, which includes all four seasons of the show, as well as hilarious outtakes, interviews with writer Steven Moffat, his wife, producer Sue Vertue (on whose relationship the characters of Steve and Susan are loosely based); an in-depth behind the scenes look at the making of the show; and commentaries on selected episodes with Moffat joined by various members of the cast (you have the option on several episodes to either view the show as it aired or watch it with commentaries taped over it).
I was only expecting four DVDs containing all the shows, and was utterly delighted with the seven discs holding all these extras. The sturdy & attractively designed pastel cases in which each DVD is contained are a cut above lots of cheap DVD packaging out there, which is a nice touch too.
When I first happened upon an episode of Coupling a few years ago courtesy of my local PBS station, I was surprised that such a poorly written and produced show could make it to the airwaves. I failed to realize at the time that Mr. Moffat was a brilliantly funny writer and the plots were supposed to be absurd. At this point I consider myself a hard core fan.
In the fourth series, the writing and overall production of the show feels so polished it bears very little resemble to the slapped-together quality of the first season, for lack of a better term. The character of Jane (aka the 'stupid one') has made the most noticeable transformation in the fourth series. Her 'dumb brunette' act has been toned down to the point of being almost unrecognizable, which works better anyway and is far less grating. I have to wonder if this was Gina Bellman's idea?
The fourth series does suffer a little from the loss of Jeff (Richard Coyle) especially in light of the fact that the character of Oliver (Richard Mylan) was clearly modeled after Jeff Murdoch. Like Jeff, Oliver is an easily-flustered, tongue-tied dork around women. He's likeable enough though, but as a new character I felt he should have had a completely different role to add another dimension to the show. Watching him you only wind up making comparisons to the inimitable Jeff. However the chemistry between goofy Oliver and dim-witted Jane has the effect of balancing their respective exaggerated personality traits out and makes scenes between these two characters especially engrossing.
All of the characters have really grown on me over the seasons, particularly Ben Miles (The Forsyte Saga) an amazing actor who effortlessly manages to make the womanizing character he portrays (Patrick Maitland) loveable and utterly realistic.
I am anxiously awaiting a fifth season!

Mexico's biggest male actor, Fernando Colunga, who is considered by some to be the Mel Gibson of the Spanish world, stars in this beautifully done story about true love, betrayal, revenge but above all, romance. At the beginning of this 7 month long novela, Eduardo (Fernando Colunga) and Fernanda (Silvia Navaro) are two young children who's life-long friendship had slowly developed into thier first love. Fernanda, the youngest of three siblings belonged to the wealthy soceity, living out in the beautiful Mexcian country side in a mansion that consisted of several nursermaids and personal servants, one of whom was Eduardo's widowed mother Soledad. It was a very happy family; but unknown to them all, a dark cloud of consipracy and revenge was looming over the horizon and it would forever shatter the lives of everyone, including Eduardo and Soledad.
One day a beautiful young woman named "Barbara Greco" arrived to become the personal assisstant of Monserat, Fernanda's mother. When Fernanda's first communion was celebrated, Eduardo had sceretly given her a necklace which consisted of a heart, and the letters "F E". Fernanda asked Eduardo what that meant, and he explained it was the first letter of both thier names. It was then that they kissed for the first time. Unfortunately, Barbara happed to be standing by and in a fury, took Fernanda away by the hand and informed her father that Eduardo had tried to "take advantage" of her. Infuriated, Fernanda's mother forbided any contact. But becuase Soledad had worked for the family since before Eduardo was born, Fernanda's father offers to finace Eduardo's education in the United States so that he may have "a better and secure future." Heart broken, Soldedad agreed that her son would be better off getting the education that she lacked all of her life. As the city bus took Eduardo away, a weeeping Fernanda arrived too late to say good bye. Eduardo heard her cries and ran to the back of the bus, sadly waving as his childhood sweetheart ran after the bus in a vain attempt to reach him.
Shortly thereafter, Fernanda's mother, who's asthematic, falls severly ill and Barbara was instructed to take care of her. Liliana, Fernanda's only sister, happened to pick up the phone and hear a converstation between Barbara and a very deep-voiced individual at the end of the line instructing Barbara to kill thier mother. Barbara however heard a noise at the other end of the line and ran upstairs where she fould Liliana listening. Barbara locked Liliana inside her bedroom while she proceeded with the orders to finish off Lily's mother. When the father of the houshold arrrived, Barbara informed him that Liliana had gone mad and suffocated her mother because she was caught with drugs in her bedroom. At first he did not believe it, but when he searched Liliana's bedroom, he found drug pills resting on top of her dresser. Shocked, Liliana cried that she did not place them there and that Barbara had killed her mother. Soledad, Eduardo's mother believed Liliana that Barbara had killed her mother and when she confronted Barbara, her life was threatened. Tragically, Liliana was placed in a mental hospital where she would be held for the next 15 years, during which time her father eventually married Barbara Greco.
Upon his return to Mexico, Eduardo was devastated by the news that Fernanda was engaged. Even more heartbreaking, was the fact his mother was gravely ill and no longer working for Fernanda's father. Penniless and alone, Soledad's health had declined over the years. Edurado mananged to see her one last time before she died. Full of rage and sense of betrayal by Fernanda and her family, he vowed to seek revenege for the death of his mother, who had done so much for them all, only to be outcasted and separated from him. During a visit from Barbara to Soledad's house, Eduardo overheard her and his childhood friend speaking, during which she inquired about Soldedad's health. When informed that she was deceased, Barbara instructed that "the old hag" be buried as soon as possible, without informing ANYONE, not even Eduardo. It was then that Eduardo slowly began to realize that he and his mother has been a part of some conspiracy. But as he would latter learn, the conspriacy involved Fernanda and her entire family as well. This once sweet romantic story now takes a dark turn, becoming "an eye for an eye." Barbara's dark "source" instructed her to take Fernanda's family and bankrupt them, thus tearing them apart one by one and destroying thier lives. Who is Barbara Greco really? Where did she come from? Who is behind the secret plot to destroy an entire family and why? Will Eduardo and Fernanda ever have the chance to find love in one another again? Find out in this exciting story FULL of twists and plots at very turn.
PS I believe this was Lucero's first appearance as a ruthless villian. For those of you who don't know, Lucero is one of Mexico's biggest stars. She is ramarkably talented in both singing and acting; in the past she played the heroine or the woman in distress, but as Barbara Greco, its Lucero at her best performance yet!

Silk Stalkings: Season one Review

Silk Stalkings: Season one

Silk Stalkings was yet another show from the fertive mind and studio of Stephen J. Cannell, and was one of (if not the) longest running of his hour long shows. Silk Stalkings originally debuted on CBS as part of the late Friday night Crime Time After Primetime slot but that was soon cancelled and it became a cable only show airing on USA Network as they had entered into a co-production deal with CBS originally.

The show lasted eight years in all and, as so many shows do, ended on a never resolved cliffhanger. But that's a long way into the future and with the ex-husband and wife team of Tom and Cassie. This first season is pure gold as we are introduced to Rita Lee Lance and Chris Lorenzo of the Palm Beach Police Department's Homicide division.

In the first few episodes Rita is a much harder character than she is for most of the rest of her run. It seems that she has an inoperable brain tumour that makes her take risks no normal cop would take. This little character trait is swiftly forgotten and never ever mentioned again. Chris and Rita have the usual male/female cop partner dynamic for the first couple of years and are Best friends in every sense of the word with no hint of sexual tension or any underlying romance. Initially they had the usual one night stands but this would later be replaced by long term relationships later on.

Calling one another Sam most of the time (and not a reference to Sam Spade but rather Slammin' Sammy Sneed, who they both considered the greatest ever golf player. The first few episodes also used golfing references in voice overs by Rita but that was also dropped although the "Sam" nickname remained throughout their time in the show.

As all good things must, eventually both Rob Estes (Chris) and Mitzi Kapture wanted to move on to pastures new and so halfway through the fourth season and after finally giving into viewers obvious wish, they became romantically involved and married. Almost instantlly Chris is killed and Rita, pregnant with Chris child, leaves Palm Beach for good. In the run up to this two new characters are slowly introduced as replacements, Michael and Holly, and dubbed "The Tupperware Twins" by fans of the show that know there is no replacing Chris and Rita, fill out the rest of season five before being totally forgotten and never mentioned again when Tom and Cassie take over at the start of season six for the shows final three seasons.

Tom and Cassie are fine replacements but there really is only one Top Detective duo in Palm Beach and that is Chris Lorenzo and Rita Lance. A magic combination that make every episode shine. They truly were an amazing pair on screen and although Mitzi Kapture was originally going to stay with the show after Rob Estes departure, only did the characters justice as it really seems like a logical end to the saga of these two wonderful characters. Estes was sick of filming in San Diego when wife, Josie Bissett, was filming Melrose Place up in LA and then Kapture became pregnant. The storyline in season four built to the marriage of Chris and Rita and then Chris's untimely death and as heart wrenching and horrible as it always seems, no matter how many times you watch it, if Rita had stayed it would have almost driven home the fact that only one actor wanted to quit instead of this end of the road for these two great characters.

But this DVD boxed set is all about Season One and the introduction of two of Cannell's greatest characters and their crime solving amongst the wealthy and famous of Palm Beach. Taking their first teetering steps and jettisoning the elements that didn't work, this show is soon hitting a stride that doesn't let up over the four and a half years we are lucky to meet up with Chris and Rita.

I was hopeful of DVD boxed sets of other Cannell shows after Wiseguy debuted, but to say that I was both thrilled and delighted that Silk Stalkings would be the first of Cannell's shows to recieve the season by season boxed set treatment would be a major understatement. My two personal favorite Cannell shows are both this and 21 Jump Street (next for release) and to see both of them starting the long list of Cannell box sets (with Greatest American Hero promised for next year as another treat, and can I please put in my vote for the short lived but amazing show Profit) was a dream come true. I'd heard rumours of Jump Street and that seemed only natural with Johnny Depp's selling power (not to mention that Jump Street was a superb Cannell show with another cast of great characters) but Silk Stalkings as the first boxed set? I can only thank the powers that be at Anchor Bay Entertainment, for making this Cannell Fans dream come true. I am literally counting the days until the release of this DVD boxed set and although we've had a slew of excellent releases this year (both old and new)THIS is the boxed set of the year for me.

There seems to be no news on special features but I'm hopeful for at least one or two audio commentaries and some cast/crew interviews, particuarly Estes and Kapture.

This review probably sounds like a paid advertisement for this DVD but if you enjoy Cannell's mix of action, humour and great characters you owe it to yourself to pick up this first boxed set. I am paitently waiting for the day that I have all four and a half years worth of Chris and Rita episodes on DVD to enjoy forever as this is one of THE best shows out there (in my humble opion obviously) and will be one of the highlights of my DVD collection.

Thanks Anchor Bay. You've done right by me.
