(More customer reviews)"Clifford's Big Halloween" is a "Clifford the Big Red Dog" DVD release featuring eight stories about our favorite big red dog (R.I.P. John Ritter) and his doggie and human friends. This DVD includes stories from frightful to fun.
The first story on this DVD is "Boo," in which everyone watches a scary movie for Halloween. Jetta claims nothing scared her, but then gets scared when she sees a very large ghost. Now who might that be?
Other stories are "Leaf of Absence," "A New Dog in Town," "Not Now I'm Busy," "Clifford's Carnival," ":Come Back, Mac," "Dino Cliford" and "The Trouble With Kittens." Themes covered include taking responsibility, not giving up, not jumping to conclusions, helping others and much more.
All episodes are close-captioned, though the special features are not. The audio is Dolby Digital and includes a Spanish track. Special features include "Speckle Stories" seen in between stories of the show on TV and a pumpkin-carving game.

Don't let that scare you away though because A Haunting in Connecticut is the best of the series, bar none. It's a story about a family who's teenage son gets cancer and to get him closer to his doctors they move to a house in Connecticut. When arriving at the house the parents, and eventually the children, realize that the house is a former funeral home, in which the previous owners still lurk in the basement!

(More customer reviews)I have grown up watching this movie every Halloween since age 5. Honestly, I've probably watched this video more than any other video I own and I love it EVERY SINGLE TIME--never a dull moment! If you love Schulz, Snoopy, the Peanuts gang and/or Halloween you simply must own this! It deserves the highest possible rating; five stars doesn't do it justice. It has perfect editing, illustrations, music, voices, script--EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS PERFECT! I've done over 70 reviews and I do believe this is the first time I have EVER used the word perfect in one of them!
My favorite scenes are the Snoopy ones, especially the World War 1 Flying Ace (flying doghouse scene with great colors) and the piano scene at the Halloween party where Snoopy dances and marches to the happy song and then changes moods and cries to the sad song..repeating twice. I laugh out loud til I cry every single time! YA GOTTA LOVE SNOOPY! He is so intelligent but sensitive too! What a dog!
My second favorite character in this video is Sally--the way she pitches a fit in the pumpkin patch and says "I was robbed!" then threatens to sue Linus--so hiliarious also! Again it makes me laugh til I cry!
Lucy the bossy and sometimes downright grouchy (to put it mildly) shows a soft side the way she wakes up in the middle of the night, goes to check on Linus and finds his bed empty, then gets dressed and goes to get him freezing in the pumpkin patch and puts him to bed without a word. The ending with Charlie Brown and Linus is endearing as well.
Each character is so unique and entertaining! JUST GET THIS VIDEO! TRULY A TIMELESS CLASSIC! YOU'LL LOVE IT--TRUST ME!

When Candace ends up in jail, Madea befriends the young woman, protecting her in a "motherly" way as only Madea can.
The cast led by Tyler Perry (back in his roles as Madea / Brian / Joe), Derek Luke (as Joshua Hardaway), & Keshia Knight Pulliam (as Candace Washington) is great! (2007, also starred as Terry), "Meet The Browns" (2008, also starred as Madea / Joe) & "The Family That Preys" (2008, also starred as Ben), he also wrote and produced "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman" (2005, also starred as Madea / Brian / Joe) is great!
The music by Aaron Zigman (who also did the music to Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?", "Meet The Browns", & "The Family That Preys" is great! The cinematography by Alexander Gruszynski (who also did the cinematography to "This Christmas" (2007) is great! The film editing by Maysie Hoy (who has been doing the casting to Perry's films since "Daddy's Little Girls") is great! The production design by Ina Mayhew (who has been doing the production design on Perry's films since "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman") is great! The casting by Kim Hardin (who also did the casting to "This Christmas") is great! The art direction by Mark Erbaugh (who also did the art direction to "The Family That Preys") is great! The costume design by Keith G. Lewis (who has been doing the costume design to Perry's films since "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman") is great!
This is an great comedy that is funny and heartwarming at times. This is another hit from Tyler Perry. Madea's back and funnier than ever.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2 - Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)Take everything that was so great about the First Christmas Vacation film, toss it out the window, get a lousy cast and a worst script and you've got the makings of Christmas Vacation 2. Randy Quaid and Miriam Flynn reprise their roles as Cousin Eddie and Catherine Johnson in this horribly un-funny "holiday" film.
Though Eddie's fired right at Christmastime, his boss sends him and his family on a South Pacific vacation, hoping Eddie won't sue him after being bitten by a lab monkey. When the Tuttle family winds up trapped on a tropical island, however, Eddie manages to provide for everyone and prove himself a real man.
Incredibly the movie has a decent supporting cast including Ed Asner, Fred Williard, Eric Idle, Stephen Furst, and Beverly Garland. Never has so little been done with so much.
Why did they make a sequel to Christmas Vacation??? No Chevy Chase, no Beverly DeAngelo? This played more like a bad sitcom than a legitimate movie. Granted, it was a made for tv film, but come on! This was just pathetic.
There were zero laughs in this movie. Seriously....zero laughs. Maybe a snicker or two but that's it. That is quite an achievement! This is nothing more than a slapped together mess meant to cash in on the name of its predecessor. National Lampoon should be cursed to watch this one over and over again.

The Soloist (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie is primarily about the relationship between the weary journalist and the homeless artist, and Downey and Foxx give great performances. It sensitively deals with issues of charity and friendship in ways that challenge conventional ideals, and I liked the fact that in the end, Downey's character seems content to stop playing the role of "rescuer" and instead lets events play out to their natural conclusion. In fact, Foxx's character, for all the mental distress he faces, seems more grounded at times than Downey's character, and you might wonder whether the soloist refers to the cello virtuoso or the journalist who seems to learn what it means to be a friend rather than going solo through life. In that respect, it's a show that operates effectively on more than a superficial level.
Now if they could just have spent a little more time coaching Foxx on his fake cello-playing skills...alas.

Bored to Death: The Complete First Season (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) is a freelance writer with one novel under his belt, a 447,000 rating on Amazon, and serious writers' block. He writes the occasional article for his friend George Christopher (Ted Danson, in a hilarious role), the bored-to-death editor of an Esquire-type magazine. Meanwhile, his buddy Ray (Zak Galifianakis)is a frustrated graphic novelist, comic-strip artist trying to hawk his work, with meager results. Zak's girlfriend Leah controls his every move, while Jonathan's girlfriend Suzanne moves out after Jonathan refuses to clean up his act according to her straight-edge wishes, i.e., no drinking, no pot smoking.
After losing his roommate/lover, Jonathan is unable to write, and suffers from a serious case of the doldrums. He mopes around his apartment, doing very little but reading Raymond Chandler novels and getting smoked up. Schwartzman is very good at conveying this bright-guy-turning-into-a-loser character. Apparently inspired by the Chandler novels, he decides to try his hand at being a private eye himself. Despite having no background whatsoever in police work, he figures he has nothing to lose and advertises on craigslist as an "unlicensed" private detective. He hopes that by doing this he will pad his bank account, as well as find inspiration for his writing. Thus, the hilarity ensues.
The series is stylish, with lots of allusions to Raymond Chandler potboilers, complete with gorgeous, troubled dames, topcoats, hats, and all the Chandler-esque parafernalia. Jonathan hasn't a clue as to what he's doing, but somehow his escapades all work out, with George and Ray as his Keystone cops sidekicks. Each episode is done tongue-in-cheek, requiring a large dose of literary license from the viewer. If the viewer has a sense of fun and enjoys a well-crafted farce, this isn't hard to do. I hope this series catches on, because in my household, this is half an hour of very entertaining television. All the actors do a fine job, my favorite being Ted Danson, who seems to thoroughly enjoy acting a fool and probably getting paid enormous amounts of money to do so. Some of the scenes are sidesplittingly funny; others have a Woody Allen-ish charm, as Schwartzman is exactly the kind of appealing nebbish that Allen always played. I hope for more "Bored to Death" episodes of this caliber in Season 2.

The Ron Clark Story (2010) Review

Ron Clark is an outstanding example of the underappreciated and underpaid teachers who quietly, selflessly ply their trade the world throughout. Ron Clark has garnered national attention for his tireless work with the rural North Carolina and inner city Harlem school systems. He's been invited to the White House on 3 separate instances and has been honored by the President and Mrs. Clinton. He has been on the Today Show and the Oprah Winfrey Show. His book The Essential 55, about his classroom rules, is a New York Times Best Seller and has been published in over 25 countries. This Johnson & Johnson-sponsored television movie, shown on TNT, tells his story.
SPOILERS begin: In 1998, teacher Ron Clark (Matthew Perry) leaves rural North Carolina and moves to Harlem, New York to toil in the inner city school system. But he finds it difficult to get a teaching position and must, in the meantime, work as a lowly costumed waiter at a theme restaurant. A door finally opens when a disgruntled teacher quits his job at the Inner Harlem Elementary School. Specializing in raising the standardized test scores of his students, Clark opts to educate the most unruly class of the 6th grade.
Initially, he has a hard time trying to reach his hardbitten kids, suffering their scorn and lack of interest. There are even bets taken by the kids as to how long he'll last. But Clark perseveres, continually asserting his "we are family" creed and enforcing his multiple classroom rules. His attempts to get the class's attention prompts him to develop fresh teaching techniques, such as his chugging down chocolate milk every 15 minutes if the students were quiet (with the possible reward of Clark puking for the kids' entertainment), or having them promise to try to learn if he takes up double dutch. He even has a try at rapping to help them learn the U.S. Presidents. Slowly, gradually, after some rough spots, his class warms up to him as the students discover that their teacher actually cares and that learning could be fun. But the biggest challenge lies ahead as Clark preps his kids for the May aptitude exams.
The film is mostly about Clark's exploits in school, with little time given over to his personal life. During the length of the film, he maintains his waitering job at the restaurant, all the while carrying a torch for lovely waitress Marissa (Melissa De Sousa), who already is saddled with an actor boyfriend. Thankfully, while the romance is touched on, it doesn't take precedence. End SPOILERS.
This is a Matthew Perry vehicle all the way, and he drives this film with a self-assurance that isn't really a revelation. His acting talent has been apparent for a while now, as shown in his turns on Friends, his various feature films, and his acclaimed guest star spots on the West Wing (let's just ignore Serving Sara, shall we?). Here, he eschews his Chandler Bing goofball role and turns in a concertedly earnest and sincere effort. Good job, Matthew Perry.
These kids are certainly depicted as more disruptive and more rough-house than those in tamer films such as To Sir, with Love and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. The kid actors are uniformly superb and real. Standouts are Hannah Hodson as the sassy Shameika (really excellent) and Brandon Smith as the troubled Tayshawn.
The Ron Clark Story merits superlatives of the highest order. The film is poignant, gentle, heartwarming, and inspirational. True, the ending is a bit hokey, but what the hey. Films like The Ron Clark Story, Stand and Deliver, and Lean On Me need to be made and put out every now and then, just to remind everyone of the importance of our society's oft overlooked linchpin - the school teacher. And Ron Clark - for his dedication, his diligence, and his caring - needed to have his story told.
Even if he really shouldn't rap.

In Treatment: Season Two Review

(More customer reviews)'In Treatment: Season Two', is as riveting as season one. Gabriel Byrne, as Paul, continues as the impassioned psychologist, dealing with a new set of patients. He sees a female college student with lymphoma, a boy whose parents are divorcing, a female attorney who he was his patient twenty years prior, and an aging company CEO . Meanwhile, he continues to have both clinical supervision and personal counseling with Gina, Diane Wiest.

Paul struggles with many of the same issues that were difficult for him in season one - - boundaries with patients, his marriage, his relationships with his children and anger and dissatisfaction with his personal and professional life. On top of that, he is being sued by the father of a patient from Season 1.
TV series do not get any better than this. As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I can vouch for the authenticity of the sessions. Therapists are human beings and 'In Treatment: Season Two' reminds the viewer of this with every episode.

Haven't we (S&TC fans) shelled out enough dough for this show. Not only do we have to pay just to watch the show, but we buy the merchandise as well. The fifth season was ok - but full price for an 8 episode season? And now they're breaking the 6th season in 2 releases and charging full price for both? HBO - thy greed runneth over - WAY over!

With Saint Joan, Pygmalion, Major Barbara, and Mrs. Warren, Mr. Shaw reports most explicitly and at length in the preface the subtle points of the play. In this case, we do not read the preface, but see the play in its entirety, well played, and denuded of its excellent preface. Nevertheless, we get the message, that the British aristocracy and anglican ecclesial authorities found too much profit in the Mrs. Warren's profession and its ancillary support systems and accidental legal proceedings to do away with it by providing a good professional education or a living wage to women factory workers, etc.
Unlike some others of this series, the BBC got it right with this Shavian production. The acting is excellent; the direction sublime. Despite the tendency towards preachiness and unreal dialogue or situations in Mr. Shaw's work, this production is very convincing to the modern "realist" viewer. The most direct comments on societal systemic injustice are pronounced with great emotion and conviction which makes them compelling and real. Perhaps we in our time and place do not speak in this manner anymore, but the actors here with great talent and skill can sell us their lines and we believe them as true. And what they have to say is in fact true, and a scathing commentary on the capitalist system which found great profit in starving women with slave wages in dangerous conditions, denying them education and suffrage, etc. and forcing them for survival's sake into the most degrading and demoralizing of work, including Mrs. Warren's Profession, which we see here for what it is, not a a labor of love but of toil and horror, and profit to its distant investors, including the renters of the same anglican church which then preaches against it. The play asks us wherein lies the fault of this grotesque immorality: in the individual women or in the society which forces them into it and supports it and coldly receives the profit sharing?
For once you can trust the BBC production is very well done, and supports this drama by Irish playwright Mr. Shaw, whose total work deserves now more than ever complete and careful study. The other drama attached to this disk is of lesser interest, as it is more of a drawing room family drama, with some slight economic and social comment, but less well presented, despite Patrick the great Irish actor growling and glowering throughout. (More customer reviews)This is an absolutely ridiculous waste of a disc. Besides the obvious issue of colorising black and white classics that generations have been enjoying without feeling they're missing much because they're not in color, there are only 4 shorts on this disc, and two of them have already been released (one of them many many times over). If one counts the black and white and colorised versions as separate entities, there are actually 8 shorts on here. I guess it makes too much sense to Columbia to have released a disc with 8 all new-to-DVD shorts, and then, if they had to, including optional colorised versions, as was done on the British Laurel and Hardy boxed set. People who prefer the films the way they were originally released and the way they've been enjoyed for decades can watch them in the black and white, and the small minority of people who are heartily cheering on this artificial colorisation can choose to watch them in that incarnation. Yes, you can choose which versions to watch, but there are still only 4 shorts on here, with only two new to DVD (and only one of those two worthwhile), and for a higher price than is merited for such a small amount of material! (Who are these people who are gushing about how great color is anyway? One would think that classic comedy is just about the only thing immune to modern-day whining about how it's inferior just because it's not in color. It makes no sense for someone who was introduced to the shorts in their original black and white and who has loved and enjoyed them that way for years to now be singing the praises of watching them in this fake-looking Chroma Color. It may look better than the colorisation of the Eighties, but it still doesn't look entirely natural, and actually seems jarring and even wrong for the Stooges to be in color, since they just exist in black and white for all time.) And of course, as with the other three colorised discs, since there are only 4 shorts apiece, it's asking the consumer to pay a lot more for a lot less, and all while we're still waiting on the nice boxed sets that are supposed to be coming in the foreseeable future.
It seems as though the people putting this disc together just randomly drew titles from a hat. 'Brideless Groom' (1947) is a classic and seems to be most people's favorite Shemp short, but since it's one of the 4 public domain shorts, it's been released over and over again. Sometimes overexposure can make even a great thing seem boring. This also isn't the first time it's been colorised. The other Shemp short included here, 'Dopey Dicks' (1950), was previously released on the (rather awful) 'Merry Mavericks' DVD. This is a really good short, but again, why is it being released again when it's already available on another disc? God forbid they select some Shemp shorts that are languishing away on out of print videos, like 'Goof on the Roof' and 'Fuelin' Around' instead of double-dipping with ones that are already available elsewhere.
'Beer Barrel Polecats' (1946) is easily one of the worst shorts of the Curly era, right down there with the likes of 'Back to the Woods' and 'Restless Knights.' I just about went into shock the first time I saw it, since he looks, talks, and acts like a ghoul, a far cry from the way he had been just a few years previously. It's so obvious he's a very sick man and was being worked practically to death during this period. Harry Cohn was truly a scummy slavedriver. To add insult to injury, most of the short is cobbled together from footage from the far superior 'So Long, Mr. Chumps' and 'In the Sweet Pie and Pie,' though it looks like these three shorts were edited together with a rusty axe. There's no continuity or explanation of important plot points that suddenly make no sense when edited into the new short, like why they're looking for prisoner 41144 or why they're being sentenced to die for smuggling beer into prison. Even the A/V quality in this one is atrocious. The ending also makes no sense. I can't believe this terrible offering is being released on DVD. Probably the only reason I can see for anyone to be buying this DVD is because the classic 'I'll Never Heil Again' (1941) is *finally* making its debut on DVD. It's too bad such a classic is making its debut on this of all things, instead of on a disc with a normal amount of shorts or a proper boxed set.
Once again Columbia/Sony is NOT giving the fans what they've been asking for for years. Who thought this marketing strategy would be a good idea? This really is an appropriate title, since this disc was created by hapless half-wits and is going to be bought by hapless half-wits. The only reason I'm not giving it a one-star rating is because three of the four shorts included are great, even if two of them are repeats and all of them are included on a joke of a disc like this.

As the ninth season begins, Hawkeye's well-earned R&R goes awry after he's taken prisoner in order to save the life of an enemy soldier. Margaret also becomes a prisoner of sorts after a wounded Italian soldier proclaims his love for her and refuses to be shipped back to his unit. If only Margaret's visiting father, Colonel "Howitzer Al" Houlihan, would express his love so freely! Love, or the lack of it, continues to plague the rest of the 4077 as well. (More customer reviews)Last year HBO released the complete series of this ground-breaking show with the very high pricetag we've come to expect from any HBO original series on DVD. According to the press release, a year later, HBO wants to make this collection more available to consumers with new compact packaging and a lower price point. I continue from the press release:
The new package is still book style, but of a vastly different sort - it opens up from a split down the center in a gatefold fashion, and discs slide in from the side. Speaking of discs, HBO informs us that all of the DVDs from the previous Complete Series set will be included, with all the bonus material found on them. However, the extra soundtrack CD discs will not be packed in with the revised collection. Still, the new list price is a hundred dollars lower, which certainly good news for any fans who perhaps couldn't afford last year's model.
End of press release. The bottom line on this is we are paying one hundred dollars less to give up 2 music CDs and in exchange get packaging that should not enable so many scratched discs. The extra features include an interview with series creator David Chase conducted by Alec Baldwin and two "Supper With the Sopranos" featurettes that will show cast members sitting down for dinner to discuss their favorite episodes.
As for the series itself, if the Godfather saga was the view of the mafia from the executive suite, this series is a complex tale of the mafia from the working man's point of view. If you've never watched this show, you're in for an extended treat. Yes, there is violence and nudity, but it is never gratuitous and is needed to contrast Tony Soprano, the thinking man's gangster, with the reality of the life he has been born to and, quite frankly, would not ever have left even knowing how so many of his associates have ended up. Tony Soprano can discuss Sun Tzu with his therapist, then beat a man to death with a frying pan in a fit of rage, and while dismembering and disposing of the body with his nephew, take a break, sit down and watch TV while eating peanut butter out of the jar, and give that nephew advice on his upcoming marriage like they had just finished a Sunday afternoon of viewing NFL football. Even Carmella, his wife, when given a chance for a way out, finds that she really prefers life with Tony and the perks that go with it and looking the other way at his indiscretions versus life on her own. If you followed the whole thing, you know how it ends. If you didn't, trust me you've never seen a TV show end like this.

Sex and the City: The Complete Fifth Season (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)I am an avid watcher of Sex and the City, I adore the show. However, I think other fans will agree with me when I say that Season 5 was pretty much the lowpoint of the series. I record all of the episodes of every season and watch them frequently . . . I haven't touched my Season 5 tapes since it aired.
Initially, it was supposed to be 13 episodes (instead of the normal 18) to accomodate Sarah's pregnancy. We were supposed to get 8 episodes in the summer and then she was to return to the show for 5 more episodes the following spring. As you can see, that never happened. We were left with 8, "okay" episodes.
My main complaint and its a big one, is the pricing of the DVD "set", if you can call it that. This is the shortest season of the series, 8 episodes, compared to the normal 18. Now why in hell would I pay just as much money for 8 episodes as I would for 18? I mean, maybe if they'd added some special features to this set to make up for a lack of episodes, I might consider buying this. However, knowing what I do about the Sex and the City DVDs I own, I highly doubt that anything has been added.
In short, I cannot recommend this purchase simply because HBO is asking the same from us (monetarily speaking) and only delivering about a quarter of what they have in the past (episodes and episode quality). Even though I love the series, I will not purchase this item.
