Toot & Puddle: I'll Be Home for Christmas Review

The DVD comes with a bonus music feature.This special finds Toot headed to Scotland to celebrate his Grandma's one-hundredth birthday. Puddle stays home and gets ready for Christmas with the cute little pig Opal, but Toot promises to be home for Christmas.
Once in Scotland, Toot gets a big dose of Scottish culture. He learns traditional Scottish songs, wears a kilt and participates in Scottish Christmas-caroling (though he only hums along.) When it comes time to go home, Toot is hampered by flight delays and such, and worries that he won't make it home. But he discovers new friends, helps out a timid elephant who's afraid of mice ("What can I say? It's genetic.") and celebrates even more international culture.
This special has cute animation, winning vocal and instrumental music and a nice plot. My only small nitpick was an excess of scene changes that seemed somewhat unnecessary. Otherwise, excellent special. Hopefully will become a classic.

The first story on this DVD is "Boo," in which everyone watches a scary movie for Halloween. Jetta claims nothing scared her, but then gets scared when she sees a very large ghost. Now who might that be?
Other stories are "Leaf of Absence," "A New Dog in Town," "Not Now I'm Busy," "Clifford's Carnival," ":Come Back, Mac," "Dino Cliford" and "The Trouble With Kittens." Themes covered include taking responsibility, not giving up, not jumping to conclusions, helping others and much more.
All episodes are close-captioned, though the special features are not. The audio is Dolby Digital and includes a Spanish track. Special features include "Speckle Stories" seen in between stories of the show on TV and a pumpkin-carving game.

The movie has all the bright colors like the book and the voice of Brooke Shields as Miss Spider. It is not loud and it is very soft and well done. The DVD has extras that are well worth the money. David Kirk reads the book and there are also more stories. Miss Spider also talks about all her kids and their names and personalities. You can't miss with this purchase and get the book too.

(More customer reviews)I'm so glad this is finally available on DVD! Hopefully the remaining episodes will be coming out soon as well. This is one of my favorite TV shows - entertaining to both children and adults, and with a good combination of action, humor and thoughtfulness. Good, clean family viewing with a moral to each episode meets knights, dragons & life in a medieval castle.
The premise is that 13 year old Jane has decided to become a knight rather than a lady-in-waiting. No one takes her seriously until a dragon shows up, and Jane is the one who saves the day, becoming best friends with Dragon in the process. Each episode involves either some new knight-in-training challenge, or sometimes just life around the castle. The characters are nicely animated (this is done by WETA, the folks who did the effects for the Lord of the Rings and Narnia movies, so you know it's good!) and their personalities well developed.

(More customer reviews)I watched this movie as a child every year with my siblings in the 80's. I recently found out it was now on DVD, and ordered it immediately!
I have to admit, there are times when I watch things as I enjoyed as a child, and I question how I liked whatever it was. This is not the case with Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. Who doesn't appreciate the fact that Bert and Ernie would sell their ducky and paperclips to buy gifts for eachother?
This is a movie that I will enjoy for many years to come. I cannot wait to have children of my own to share it with.

Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie (2005) Review

My daughter and I are huge Winnie the Pooh fans, and we had been looking forward to the release of Pooh's Heffalump Halloween ever since we saw the first Heffalump movie. Unlike that movie, which was charming and endearing, this one is ponderous, uninteresting, and contrived. The previews show only the good scenes and leave out the sleep-inducing flashback to a previous Halloween where Piglet was scared half to death. And the movie ends with a yawn; the theme of unconditional friendship never really came out like it did in the original Heffalump movie. And where was Owl? He has been MIA ever since Piglet's Big Movie in 2003. I give this movie two stars only because my daughter and I love the characters so much.

The Yearling (1947) Review

(More customer reviews)This wonderful film is one of a handful that has the power to call me back to my childhood days and wrap me in warm memories of my Mom, Dad and little brother sitting around the television on Saturday night, watching the late show.
From the opening scenes of this beautifully photographed movie I found myself caught-up in the intriguing post Civil War story of a boy and his pet faun and their fantastic adventures on a scruffy Florida Everglades farm. The film stars Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and Claude Jarman in the lead roles, with some of Hollywood's best character actors in the colorful supporting roles.
Peck gives an Oscar caliber performance as the warmhearted father who tries his best to make a better life for his family, with absolutely no help from the elements, which surround them. Jane Wyman plays his wife Orry, the hardened mother and wife who is so embittered by past tragedies in her life that she refuses to show any love for her one remaining child for fear of losing him too. And Claude Jarman plays Jodie the wistful young son who is just one summer away from adolescence and all the hardships that come with growing up.
This story is chock-full of excitement and adventure sure to please the kids, and each of those adventures is also a great lesson on life that will stay with them for years to come. Just watching Jodie romp with his pet faun for that one fleeting summer is a joyous site to behold and the touching scenes where Orry finally begins letting herself love her son will bring tears to your eyes. And of course the heart-rending scenes of Jodie trying his best to get the yearling to run away so he won't have destroy it, all come together to make this movie one of the most emotional experiences of my childhood and I must say I believe I'm a better person for the values I learned from this timeless story.
Experience this film with your children, you won't be sorry you did.

Underdog - Ultimate Collection Review

(More customer reviews)I'm convinced there's a patron saint for fools and animators," says Underdog creator Joe Harris in the bonus feature interview on disc one ( Perils of Sweet Polly), also available separately, as are the other two discs in the Ultimate Collection. What surprised me in the interview was Joe holding up a copy of Animato!, a late, great animation magazine I used to write for, and of which the publisher sent me a signed copy of Joe's wonderful Underdog cover. This interview is the number one reason to get this set, but there are plenty more.
Underdog hit the airwaves in 1964 with humble and lovable Shoeshine Boy, AKA Underdog, voiced by kid favorite "Mr. Peepers", Wally Cox. This box set includes three discs, each with six two-part Underdog episodes (three story arcs) and about ten supporting cartoons drawn from various incarnations of King Leonardo and His Short Subjects and Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales. Those include The Hunter, Klondike Kat, Tooter Turtle, the King and Odie, Tennessee and Chumley, and Commander McBragg. The favorite was probably Go Go Gophers, voiced by NY kids' TV host Sandy Becker, and which spun off as its own show in 1968. These supporting cartoons include titles, but not their original theme music. Although these shows came from Total Television, the whimsical, stylized look was so similar to the Jay Ward shows, both inspired by the modern UPA cartoon style, that reviewers often confuse them with such Ward characters as Rocky and Bullwinkle, Hoppity Hooper, and George of the Jungle. They were known as "cliff-hanger" cartoons because they drop off at the end, so that each Underdog story runs for two two-part episodes (four parts).
The only thing slightly annoying about this set is that the discs open with ads for the Harveytoons Collection and a new CGI Casper movie, Casper's Scare School. The amazing thing, however, is how good the Harvey 'toons from Famous Studios look, and the Casper film, unlike many CGI direct to DVD films, seems to be reaching for the high standard of the Pixar- raised bar. This set comes through Classic Media, now part of Entertainment Rights (although Classic has a lot better logo) and is released through Genius Entertainment. The opening Underdog theme is also the abbreviated one used for syndication. Disc two, however, includes a bonus feature Underdog sing-a-long.
A previous three DVD Underdog set, also released as three individual discs, appeared in 2002 from Classic Media through Golden Books and Sony Wonder. The three discs were called Collector's Edition, The Underdog Chronicles, and Underdog Nemesis, and collected cartoons previously released on VHS. The surprising thing is that these are not the same 'toons as on the Ultimate Collection. Joe Harris says there were 124 segments of Underdog made, meaning 62 episodes. 18 episodes down in this set leaves, amazingly, 44 episodes to go. there's reason to hope they will all be forthcoming, as the new logo for Underdog on this set ties in with the live-action Underdog movie. All in all, this set is a great deal, with 18 Underdog two- part episodes and about 30 other cartoons, not to mention numerous extras and great packaging.

Barney - Best Manners (Invitation To Fun) Review

(More customer reviews)I've read other reviews about how annoying Barney can be, but there is alot worse than Barney out there. The kids love him, and there is an educational component to his DVDs. This is one of the better ones. The songs are about sharing, washing and other behaviors we want to encourage. I for one would rather my children be listening to a dinosaur sing about inside voices than watching mindless cartoons.

(More customer reviews)My 2 year old daughter is a huge Dora fan, and she loves this DVD. The 4 episodes are very good, and include Dora had a little lamb, which is very entertaining, and deals with many of the nursery rhymes our kids see at preschool and look at in books.
The menu selection on the DVD is easy, though I wish there was a way to have the episodes repeat or go back to back with one another- when my Mom babysits, she has trouble turning the DVD on, so easier is always better.
The DVD also contains some interesting features, like games which I think will be good for my daughter when she gets a little older.

Monster House (Widescreen Edition) (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I just saw this film today (after missing out on a sold out sneak preview last weekend) and the increased level of expectation was met with one of the most rewarding moviegoing experiences I've had in the last five years. Monster House gives us one doozy of a spooky antagonist, a decrepit domicile of living malice that gobbles errant toys and passerby with equal ingenuity and viciousness.
The house is plain old MEAN, and for really small children perhaps a little too scary to take in a gigantic room filled with strangers and darkness. But for those of us who are too grown up for a nighlight this is perfect, creepy entertainment.
The same motion capture technology used to create The Polar Express (a film which I have still yet to see) is a very interesting and appropriate choice for this film, where the only truly fantastic element is the demented house that will not suffer trespassers. It works so well because the eerie realism that depicts the characters is so starkly contrasted with the insanity that ultimately drives the Monster House to be, well, so monstrous.
Now I fully expected to be entertained by the antics of the house, but I didn't expect there to be much of a story. Again I was pleasantly surprised by what I think is a script that I believe is just as worthy of an Oscar nomination as the script for The Incredibles was. There is, beneath the floorboards of this film, more heart than horror. A tale of love, retribution, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately letting go.
Monster House is, beyond a doubt, one of the coolest Horror movies for kids ever made. A Halloween tradition in the making that dares to answer that age old question: Can a house be haunted?
The answer is a resounding yes with a disquieting post script.
Whatever is haunted may also be hungry!

Even for a 12-year old, D.J. Walters has a particularly overactive imagination. He is convinced that his haggard and crabby neighbor Horace Nebbercracker, who terrorizes all the neighborhood kids, is responsible for Mrs. Nebbercracker's mysterious disappearance. Any toy that touches Nebbercracker's property, promptly disappears, swallowed up by the cavernous house in which Horace lives. D.J. has seen it with his own eyes! But no one believes him, not even his best friend, Chowder. What everyone does not know is D.J. is not imagining things. Everything he's seen is absolutely true and it's about to get much worse than anything D.J could have imagined.

Tinker Bell (BD Live) Review

(More customer reviews)"Tinker Bell" has gotten a lot of online commentary, most of it negative, so I wasn't really excited to watch my preview copy of this movie. I was VERY pleasantly surprised by what I saw. "Tinker Bell" is an enjoyable movie, perfect for children and even entertaining for adults. Based upon what I'd read previously, I would not have gone to a theater to see this; however, after watching it, I believe this movie is worthy of both big screen AND home entertainment viewing. Unfortunately, most of the banter has focused on the fact that Tinker Bell speaks. Personally, this is a minor point, as the animators have done a tremendous job of having Tinker Bell retain her spunky nature and movements that we all know from "Peter Pan (2-Disc Platinum Edition)."
The story is fairly simple; Tinker Bell arrives in Pixie Hollow, where all the Fairies have talents. It is discovered that (no surprise) Tinker Bell's talent is "tinkering" or fixing things. However, in Tink's opinion, this is not very exciting. She'd rather be one of the Fairies who gets to take Spring to "the mainland" (aka London). As you can imagine, Tink's early time at Pixie Hollow is filled with figuring out who she really is and that she is just as important as the other fairies who have more glamorous talents. There is plenty of humor, emotion, and visual beauty that helps elevate what seems like an oft-told tale.
The animation is fantastic; although it is obviously computer generated, it is apparent that the level of the animators doing it is such that they focus on camera movements, lighting, color, and emotional nuances rather than just the basics. Still, the characters do still have somewhat of a doll-like/mechanical quality. The movement and facial emoting is a vast improvement over some of the early computer animation, but it does still have a little way to go.
There is also a first-rate cast behind the scenes, giving the voices to these animated characters: Anjelica Huston (Queen Clarion), Lucy Liu (Silvermist), America Ferrera (Fawn), Kristin Chenoweth (Rosetta), Kathy Najimy (Minister of Summer), and my favorite, Jane Horrocks as the sassy Fairy Mary. The Celtic-inspired score by Joel McNeely is also enjoyable and the perfect accompaniment to the film.

* Deleted scenes include optional introductions by Bradley Raymond (director) and Jeannine Roussel (producer): "Queen Clarion's Pixie Dust," "Fairies Venture to the Mainland," "Becoming a Garden Fairy," "Tinker Bell's Tinkering Talents," "Vidia Tricks Tinker Bell," "Fairies Express Tinker Bell's Importance"
While enjoyable, they are not really missed from the film.
* Sneak previews, most notably the Blu-ray version of 1940's "Pinocchio." It looks fantastic! Being released March 2009.

(More customer reviews)What the first reviewers apparently did not know is that this video is part of a larger collection of videos which bring favorite children's stories to video. This one does contain one episode of the Ralph S. Mouse series, as well as several other titles. There are dozens of Scholastic Video Collection videos, all available on both DVD or VHS as far as I know. They are great videos, which all 4 of my kids have enjoyed. Most have bonus stories in addition to the two or three listed on the back, some have interviews with authors or illustrators, and some have read-along features or Spanish-language versions.
If you are looking for the complete series of Ralph S. Mouse, look somewhere else. If you are looking for children's books animated on video, then this is a good one to start with.

I much prefer Dora's Rhymes & Riddles or Map Adventures to this one....

Holly Hobbie - Best Friends Forever Review

(More customer reviews)I have mixed feelings about this show, but ultimately, it's great. My 3 year old daughter loves it. She asks to watch it every day, which is where my mixed feelings come in. I'm pretty sick of it. But if you're looking for a show your little girl will want to watch, this will work. It has a very short scary part, but my daughter, who is skiddish and makes me fast forward through scary parts of OTHER movies, is NOT scared during this one. I like the message too, it's basically about helping someone in need. And it's not too long, about 40 minutes.
