Red Riding Hood Review

(More customer reviews)My almost four year old granddaughter picked this film as she already knew the story of Little Red Riding Hood from her mom and dad. I was a little concerned it might be too scary as it is PG but I should have realized that she was able to handle it very well.
The wolf is a werewolf. Lainie Kazan is the grandmother and is reading the story to her grandchildren. Lainie is wonderful in this!! If you are over 50 you may remember her singing on the Mike Douglas Show or on Ed Sullivan.
While the wolf swallows people whole, it is done by special effects that make it look cartoonish thus not scaring even my granddaughter! She really loved the whole film and was very enthusiastically telling her aunt, one of my other daughters, how good it was!!
If you have a mature preschooler who understands pretend and cartoon violence, they will enjoy this as the singing and fun stuff are hilarious. There is a precarious situation for the two kids in the film but even that is broken by humor and turning out not to be as dangerous as it looks. Otherwise I would recommend the viewing be by at least 5 or 6 year olds.

The Three Musketeers (1948) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm a huge fan of just about everything musketeers related (look at my other reviews), and this is my favorite big screen adaptation. Kelly is easlily the most fun D'Artagnon to watch and the sword play in this movie is excellent with his athleticism.
Of course, anyone who read the novel would know that though it includes sword play it is the charaters and plot that move the story along, so in that respect this movie does a much better job than most Musketeer adaptations. It stays fairly close to the original plot and though there is little time spent developing their personalities the Three are more consistant with their literary counterparts than in, well really, any of the other adaptations.
Over all one of the most fun adventure movies I've seen.

The Secret Garden (1975) (1984) Review

(More customer reviews)It is a pity that so many people are misled into buying the 1993 version or the Hallmark version of this book. The former is valuable as a study of wooden acting and unbelievable dialogue. The Hallmark version (as usual) just throws the book away--they can do it better. The 1949 version also "improves" on the book by turning it into a suspense-thriller in the first half and has all the characteristics of '40s movies--phony characters, phony dialogue and big stars.
This movie is for people who loved the book; and except for extremely minor flaws which most people will not notice, this movie brings the whole book to life perfectly. Nothing is left out. Sarah Hollis Andrews gives a stunning performance for one so young. None of the California accents of the Hallmark version or the East European characters of the 1993 version. This is Yorkshire and this is Francis Hodgson Burnett, not Agnieszka Holland.
There has been an abridged version on the market for years, cut to make it a full-length movie (100 minutes). This present version is twice that length. Even if you have the abridged version, buy this one and see what a difference those cuts make. The characters are even more sympathetic and more real, and there is time to deal more with all the other characters (the nurse, Dr. Craven, Mr. Craven, etc.) and more time for Mary Lennox and more interaction between Mary and Collin and Dickon.
In short, this movie is a treasure and every child above the age of 8 deserves to see this version. If you are a diehard and want to see the other versions, fine, or if you've already been suckered into buying them. But get this version. You'll never watch those other versions again. And your kids will have an experience to carry with them the rest of their lives.

(More customer reviews)This is rather funny and strange... I'm an 18 year old Senior now, and I can still remember seeing this movie, as a 9 year old kid lounging on my couch. The scary part is that all my friends remember this movie too. I could be bored in calculus, and start hummin' "Pippi Longstockings is comin' into your world," and within 10 seconds at least 10 other kids are singin along. None of us understand how or why we remember it, (maybe it had to do with the fact that every guy had a crush on Pippi when he was about 10. Her and Punky Brewster) Anyway, I just wanted to write this to say it could definately be a great thing for your kid, it made an impact on about 1/5 of my high school graduating class. (by the way, if anyone knows how to reach, or knows how or find out what happened to Tami Erin,[she was so cool]send me an E-mail pleeeze) ---thanks

(More customer reviews)I bought this set because it contains two performances by the much beloved late Jeremy Brett. Though I'm happy to say that all four plays, and the fascinating biography on Oscar Wilde are exceptionally well done! The other reviewer summerized the four productions excellently, so I just wanted to add my two cents.
The two Brett plays-The Picture of Dorian Grey, and The Ideal Husband, showcase Mr. Bretts superb acting ability. He's wonderfully dark and morose in Dorian, but equally light, witty and charming in Ideal. This set should be in the Library of any Brett aficionado.
The other two productions-The Importance of Being Ernest and Lady Windermere's fan, are in many ways even surperior to the other two productions. Joan Plowright is exceptional in Ernest and proves why she's a Grand Dame of British threatre. The BBC should be applauded for putting these productions on TV as it enables the everyday person, like myself, to see quality theatrical productions when most would not have the means or ability to do so in person. I hope the BBC brings more plays like these to TV for modern viewers.
All in all, I highly recommend this inexpensive, quality set to any period piece fan. 5 stars!

White Fang (3-DVD Pack) Review

(More customer reviews)White Fang the series is yet another retelling of Jack London's famous book of the same name. Whereas the book tells about White Fang in the roll of a sled dog living in the Klondike gold rush years, this series moves the story to current times in the Rocky mountains and adds the inevitable 'boy and his loyal dog' twist to the concept. About the only similarities are White Fang's name and that he was rescued from a cruel man called Beauty Smith.
Why T.V. producers can't seem to come up with an original show with a dog hero and not just reuse a well known story is beyond me. Anyway, White Fang sports fairly good acting, beautiful scenery, and a terrible soundtrack. If you can get over the music, this show is enjoyable in its own right. White Fang is an Alaskan malamute (although they portray him as the stereotypical "wolfdog") who exhibits extraordinary good sense and often rescues his not so bright family from danger with fairly standard hero-dog skills like rescuing drowning people, fending off "wolves" (other malamutes in makeup) and locating important clues at crime scenes. Although the plot lines are simplistic, this is nicely balanced by a lack of gore and swearing, making it acceptable family viewing.
If you are nuts about Nordic breeds and will watch anything featuring them, this show is for you. Others may want to avoid this particular series.

(More customer reviews)I must have been a very goofy kid, because this is a very goofy show. Over twenty years after its original airing on Nickelodeon, I still love this show. It has a sincerity that is rare for a cartoon, but it doesnt seem sappy or over done. I recommend this to any one born in the late 70's or early 80's who spent their afternoons looking at Nick. Was there a better time to be a kid than the 80's?
