(More customer reviews)For anyone familiar with other Mill Creek collections, this is pretty standard. It's a collection of 600 cartoons, of frequently middling video quality and unknown provenance (i.e. you may being seeing the version originally shown, or the version edited for TV 30 years later). The collection is indiscriminate--"Destination Earth" is a propaganda piece by the oil industry, for example--but most of them are fairly typical cartoons. If you have other cartoon collections, this probably overlaps them, if it doesn't include them. Many of these cartoons are available online from legit sources.
Being familiar with Mill Creek, my worst problem with this set was organization. There's no good reason to spread series across several disks, mixed in with other cartoons. No disk is filled by cartoons with one character or by one series, and one typical example, the Popeye cartoons, have 30 cartoons on one disk, 6 on another, and one more on its lonesome.
Is it worth it? If you have to have just about every cartoon released in these "public domain" cartoon collections in one neat box, then this is your box. If you don't have any "public domain" cartoon collections and want to see one, this will begin and just about end your collection. You might want to grab a few DVDs at a dollar store first, to see if it's to your taste. If you're looking for a decent collection of almost any of the Warner Brothers or Disney characters, then don't look here; little of their work is available here, and it's not the good shorts. If you're looking for beautifully restored film, likewise, you need to look at pricier, smaller sets; this set averages okay with some pretty bad stretches, and at no point has seen careful restoration.

Alfred Hitchcock - The Legend Begins (20 Movie Classics) Review

(More customer reviews)Since the days of bargain-bin videotapes by labels like Goodtimes, I've always been wary of these "too good to be true" deals. Yet, as I am quite a fan of the films of Alfred Hitchcock, I couldn't pass this one up. And for the most part, I'm glad I gambled a few bucks.
As of this writing, the majority of these films are still in the public domain and thus, not available from companies willing to spend the time and money on a proper restoration. It's worth noting, though, that some of the best films here ARE available in near-pristine condition in the 3-disc The Alfred Hitchcock Box Set (The Ring / The Manxman / Murder! / The Skin Game / Rich and Strange). Two are available in Criterion Collections: The Lady Vanishes - Criterion Collection and The 39 Steps (Criterion Collection Spine #56), while Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn can be found in a cleaned-up version from Image. For those who don't want to shell out the considerable bucks for all those, or if you're a completist (like me) who feels the need to possess EVERY film the man made, this is a good set to own.
Audio/Video quality varies among the films, but I'd consider them all watchable. Since early sound classics like SECRET AGENT and RICH AND STRANGE aren't available in better condition elsewhere, I found the transfers here to be reasonably good. Hitch's best silent film, THE LODGER, unfortunately suffers some serious contrast issues.
The real highlight of this set, however, is nearly an hour's worth of Hitchcock movie trailers. Oddly enough, none of the films contained in the set is represented with a trailer. But they cover much of the Master's career from 1940 thru the late 60's. And the quality on the trailers is far superior to that of the films.
Bottom line: For all but the most discriminating viewer, this is a worthwhile purchase. Just don't expect the quality you'd get from the major companies.

150 Cartoon Classics Review

(More customer reviews)For the price you really can't complain too much. There are about 2/3 of the set that I rate as good cartoons that I'd watch again. Obviously some real clunkers, like THREE STOOGES, the HOFFNUNG & the MR PIPER ones which don't appeal to me liking the bizarre 1930s ones, fortunately there are lots of those on here! Many are typical public domain quality, the worst one is the wonderful COBWEB HOTEL Fleisher Toon which is rough at the start. Some have extra noise too from worn films. 5 stars for 2/3 being good toons & the price.
There are loads of Popeye (23 of them, almost all the post Fleischer ones), just one Casper & Woody Woodpecker, which may disappoint, but the Woody one is a great early 40s one.
BEWARE buying this set if you own the 100 Cartoon collection (with the dog pen drawing on the front) and the 101 Set (from Australia) as these duplicate most of this set. The 101 set copies 75% of this set in the same order!

The Cisco Kid - Collection 2 (1950) Review

(More customer reviews)One of the first to be filmed in color "The Cisco Kid Collection 2", featuring Duncan Renaldo as Cisco and Leo Carillo as Pancho, both actors been in the film business for decades ~ once again they fill the bill for a new Western Series for both kids and adults alike.

Much like it's predecessor, this second collection has many half-hour episodes, from a selection of twenty, that have never seen the light of day ~ the two legendary pair have been on the screen since the early '30s and have sent a positive message on moral and fair play to every wrangler and buckaroo that sat in front of the Big screen and little screen ~ always for the little guy, once they have uncovered a plot or solved the mystery the action comes on strong ~ can remember all the kids in
the neighborhood saddling up and riding the dusty trails right after watching the weekly program.

The series star Duncan Renaldo was presented with a "Special Lifetime Achievement Award from Nosotros" ~ for providing a positive Hispanic role model for Americans that was certainly well deserved ~ Renaldo always held his head high in every way ~ O. Henry's famous Robin Hood of the Old West, a fictional western character "The Cisco Kid" came to life through a weekly series as they clean up a wild town, trailing cattle rustlers and always for the under-dog ~ take notice that all the episodes were filmed in the great outdoors.

In summary, this classic Western ran from 1950-1956 featuring great action sequences climaxing each story that holds up today as one of our great western heroes ~ once again because of film preservation and this restored DVD, we can escape to the old west and family entertainment ~ was good to see one of my all-time favorite sidekicks Leo Carillo (Pancho), take the english language to another level ~ his famous one liners still ring in my head, and I loved every one of them ~ especially at the end, when both would sing out with "Oh, Pancho" and then "Oh, Cisco", they'll never be another like the two of them...gotta love it!

Its target audience was children, so "Robin" aired on the CBS-TV network, Monday nights at 7:30. The series lasted four seasons, from 9/26/55 to 11/12/60. Cast members of "Robin Hood" often appeared in multiple roles and regular characters were at times portrayed by different actors.
In MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT's complete series box, the first three 39 chapter seasons are contained on 9 single-side recorded discs. The 26 episodes of season #4 have been compressed onto two DVDs.

Dungeons & Dragons: The Complete Animated Series Review

(More customer reviews)This was my #1 favorite cartoon series when I was eleven years old in 1983. I watched it religiously on TV back then, and when we got our first VCR, I recorded every re-run and watched those videotapes until I wore them out. Naturally, I was excited to hear this show was finally coming out on DVD. I bought the complete series box set released by BCI right away. All the episodes look great in terms of picture quality. Not to mention, the special features are surprisingly plentiful for an old, mostly-forgotten Saturday morning cartoon, and it really brought back some great memories.
Then I discovered a very disappointing problem. And I'm going to sound like a real nit-picker here - but I gotta state my case...
Any dedicated fan of this show is familiar with the episode "The Dragon's Graveyard" - generally considered to be the best episode of the entire series. That's the one where the kids decide to destroy Venger (the ultimate, evil bad guy) once and for all. They plan to do this by convincing Tiamat (the ultimate, evil 5-headed Dragon) to help them. It's a very cool story, because the good guys basically team up with one arch villain in order to settle their grudge match with another arch villain. As a kid in the 80's, I videotaped this series and "The Dragon's Graveyard" was one episode that I went back and watched repeatedly. So, I know that episode almost by heart. One of the things I always loved about that episode, and which I still remember clearly, was its powerful musical score. Especially during the scene where Venger throws fireballs at Uni, the baby Unicorn, nearly killing her, and the scene at the end, where the kids have their final, climactic battle with Venger, pin him against a rock, and lead hero Hank has to make the ultimate decision whether to kill Venger, or let him go. From watching and re-watching this particular episode to death on videotape, I remember very clearly that during these scenes the music had a fast, chaotic, rushing quality - a theme not heard frequently in other episodes - which racheted up the energy and took the drama way beyond typical Saturday morning cartoon fare.
And yet, while watching this same classic episode on the BCI-released Dungeons and Dragons DVD set, I noticed that this music had been completely replaced with slower, formulaic sections of music that can be regularly heard elsewhere in the series. This change in the music made the scenes described above considerably less effective, severely weakening the emotional impact of this episode.
Allright, now - yes - I realize how trite and ridiculous it must sound for a 30+ year old man to be nit picking the DVD quality of one single episode of a Saturday Morning cartoon show he loved when he was eleven. But the whole reason I bought this DVD set in the first place was to re-experience the innocent fun of those childhood memories, and instead I got a diluted version of that experience.
As a matter of fact, in the "Episode Trivia" section, it even mentions that another version of "The Dragon's Graveyard" episode exists, with a completely different musical score... and when I read that, all I could think was, "Yeah, no kidding, and you bozos put the weaker of the two versions on the DVD set. Thanks a lot!"
So... that's my one huge disappointment with the BCI set, and I'm guessing other fans who are total geeks for this show, will notice and be bothered by it, too.
NOW HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS... In 2009, Dungeons and Dragons was RE-RELEASED in a new DVD set, by a company called Mill Creek Entertainment. I had heard rumors that this new release RESTORED ALL of the ORIGINAL MUSIC used on the show, thus presenting every episode AS IT APPEARED, WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY SHOWN on TV in the early 1980's. At first I wasn't sure if I should believe the rumors... Then I saw that the Mill Creek release was selling for a surprisingly lower price than the BCI set... Low enough that I decided it was worth giving it another shot.
So, I ordered it, and let me tell you as a knowledgeable fan, that yes - the Mill Creek Entertainment release DOES include all the episodes with their original music. THIS is "The Dragon's Graveyard" as I remember and love it. Be advised, the Mill Creek release contains no Special Features, which is unfortunate, but I find myself not caring about that. The important thing is to have all the original episodes in their original form. And again, the price on the Mill Creek set is also a lot cheaper than the price on the BCI set, so it's hard to complain about the lack of "extras".
Bottom line - this is a great cartoon series. But if you want to experience this show in its original form - do yourself a favor: Snub the BCI set, and buy the Mill Creek Entertainment set. Take if from a long time fan of this show. I was deeply disappointed with the BCI set, and very, very happy with the Mill Creek set.

This set is one of the best values I have seen for the price.
Contents include 5 Christmas episodes of Ozzie and Harriet, 4 of the Beverly Hillbillies, also Christmas episodes of Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Dragnet, Burns and Allen, Abbot and Costello, Petticoat Junction. Variety and music, such as Liberace and Fred Waring. Drama includes Four Star Playhouse, Dickens' A Christmas Carol with Vincent Price, even Sherlock Holmes and a Lux Theatre production of Holiday Affair. Many, many more. I was astounded to see the commercials included with all of the shows, giving it a real 50's feel! Wonderful step back in time! This is truly marvelous entertainment for the Christmas Season. Sit back with a mug of hot cocoa and some Christmas cookies, with the Christmas tree lights twinkling, curl up and enjoy!!

Roy Rogers 20 Movie Pack (4 DVD) (1939) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a really nice set that would make a perfect stocking stuffer for anyone who loved the movies back in the day. It's 20 movies on 4 discs. Run times range from 52-72 minutes.
The digital restoration is very extensive and they clearly had some poor stock to work from. They look very clean, but as is typical of extensive restoration there is some reduction in resolution at times. Sometimes you can see a slight blur where the old scratches are that were repaired -and there are many. Some reels are pretty clear while others are a bit more blurry but nothing is intolerable in my opinion.
The loss of resolution is most noticable in the darkest scenes. There are many dark scenes where it's clear there wasn't enough visual information to restore it to full light.
Despite everything, the movies are very watchable. My mother who saw all these movies every Saturday for a nickel was very happy, as I expect most people of that generation would be with these discs.
Overall, the resolution is slightly better than VHS tape, but much lower than a typical, modern DVD. The sound was only very occasionally muddy and is really pretty good for the most part. They've also got all the sound at a pretty consistent volume so there are no extreme changes in volume.
Considering the very economical price, I'd say the set is well worth what you pay. I'd be a little disappointed if it were an expensive set, but it's OK for the money. If you're tempted, I say go for it. You won't be sorry. You get the stories and the characters just fine and that's what's important.

The Jack Benny Program aired on radio from 1932 to '55. Many of that show's scripts were recycled for television, beginning in 1950. Benny's CBS-TV series ran until 1965. The core cast (on radio and TV) changed little over the decades: Dennis Day replaced tenor Kenny Baker early on; Bob Crosby (Bing's younger brother) took over for bandleader Phil Harris in 1952.
At one time or another, almost every Hollywood, radio and TV star guested on Jack's show. This four DVD set offers only a fraction of Benny's 258 television episodes, yet the viewer is provided an excellent illustration of his popularity within the "Showbiz" community.
An unrelated highlight of this collection is a 1943 documentary about Hollywood's war efforts. Among the 58 cameo appearances here are: Benny, W.C. Fields, Louis Armstrong, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Bob Hope, Alfred Hitchcock, Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles, Irving Berlin, James Cagney, Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Marlene Dietrich and Walt Disney.
The Martin & Lewis Collection - COLGATE COMEDY HOUR (17 episodes) is highly recommended for fans of early TV comedy/variety programming.
