50 westerns, seems like a bargain?! Well... maybe, depending on your tolerance for sub-par film transfers. There are some great films here to be sure, but at least a third are pretty bad transfers, and the rest are mostly just marginal at best. Virtually all of the more commonly available films offered here can be found in significantly better quality elsewhere.
Virtually all of the half dozen or so of the films from the 1960's are total trash - you can not watch these without getting a headache - totally unwatchable!!! For example, check out "The Grand Duel" starring Lee Van Cleef in the sixties - a totally washed out, blurry disaster, probably one of the very worst film transfers I have ever seen on DVD (note: a much better film transfer of this movie is available on the Platinum issued Lee Van Cleef DVD). On the other hand, in this collection you get an early 1940's era film like Howard Hughes' "The Outlaw" in near pristine condition. Most of the other films in this collection fall somewhere in between quality wise.
But, you should be aware that in most cases these same films can be found in significantly better quality in other generally superior DVD collections - see my other Amazon reviews for several examples. Check out "Tough Guys of the West" for a much better collection of 20 similar B-Westerns or check out any of the Platinum issued DVDs included in "The Great American Western" series.
Included in this collection are several commonly found Roy Rogers and Gene Autry films - however, these are mostly just copies from fuzzy VHS and as a result most of them have a slight out of focus look to them - you get used to it after awhile and you can watch them o.k., but just be warned that the quality is somewhat lower than your average VHS tape. I have found that the Madacy or Platinum issued Roy Rogers films are generally as good and in some cases better film transfers than what you find in this collection (see my review for the Madacy issued Roy Rogers DVDs). Also, you might want to check out the Roan Group issued DVDs for some other Roy Rogers titles not included here in this collection (see my review for more details on those great DVDs).
And then you have the Tex Ritter and Bob Steele films - these appear to be actually mastered from original 16mm or 35mm film - the only problem is that they tend to have a lot of scratches and splices at certain points. In one Tex Ritter film the soundtrack gets out of synch with the action and talking for about 20 minutes. But even so, you do get a reasonably sharp image direct from film instead of a third rate, fuzzy VHS copy. And often these films run for quite a long time without any problems and when problems do pop up it's only for a minute or two - in other words, you can mostly enjoy the films without eye strain. Even so, I will warn you that these particular early Bob Steele and Tex Ritter films are not really that great even considering the time period and the genre. Both Tex and Bob have made better films than the ones offered in this collection - these are mostly just "o.k." performances - nothing great.
If you like Bob Steele you should check out a superior performance in the film credited to Roy Rogers, "The Carson City Kid" which is included in this collection. This is an early Roy Rogers (pre-Dale Evans) film which co-stars Bob Steele. "Carson City Kid" is very enjoyable, but again, as noted above, the transfer of the Roy Rogers films here are not very sharp (the one put out by Madacy, for example, while still not perfect, is far better than the transfer included in this collection, while the one issued by Platinum easily has the best best picture of all, but that soundtrack is easily the worst! So, take your pick!) - but, in any case, my point is that Bob Steele's performance as the bad guy in this film is much better than the other earlier films he stars in that are included in this collection.
"Vengence Valley" with Burt Lancaster is in color and a great movie, but the image here is not very sharp and the color is severely faded out as if copied from a VHS copy someone left on the dashboard of the car a bit too long! I have the version issued by Platinum and it is nearly perfect with pretty good color and very sharp looking. Get the Platinum version and avoid the one in this collection!
"The Kansan" and "Abilene Town" are both really great movies, but here they are both particularly fuzzy looking - again, another case of bad transfers from VHS? "Abilene Town", for example, can be found in much, much better quality on the "Tough Guys of the West" DVD collection (see my review for "Tough Guys of the West"). "The Kansan" is also available on Alpha Video and while Alpha has a very mixed track record for some of these films, their version in this case is much better than the one in this collection - see my Amazon review).
The early John Wayne films are also a mixed bag - most are fuzzy looking, but some might actually be from film instead of VHS copies - it's hard to tell. "McLintock" from 1963 is basically trash in this collection - very fuzzy and very faded color. Please also note that "McLintock" is being released very shortly (or has been released by the time you read this) by the John Wayne estate on DVD - you will probably want get that one!
Better film transfers of some of these early Lone Star Production John Wayne films (at least not any worse and in some cases significantly better) can found on the Roan Group DVD, "The Early Years Collection." I have a much better, near perfect DVD transfer of "Angel and the Bad Man" (from Good Times) compared to the fuzzy version you find in this set.
A couple of other films are rare in that I have never seen them offered on DVD before, so you might need to get this set for those. "Billy the Kid Trapped" and "Arizona Stagecoach" for instance are ones I had never seen before on DVD - I found both to be very enjoyable and are from film transfers, but again with a lot of splices and scratches at various points - but still very enjoyable and very watchable. I don't think any of the Tex Ritter films are available elsewhere. The same Bob Steele films in this collection are also offered on Alpha Video DVDs, but I don't know if they are in any better condition on Alpha than what you find here in this collection, but my guess is you would likely be better off with the Alpha versions.
So, the bottom line is that you should get this if;
(1) You need a good copy of "The Outlaw" - it's the only film here that is in pristine condition.
(2) You need to have the few films that only appear in this DVD collection and nowhere else.
(3) You don't want to spend a lot of money, and don't care about quality, yet you want to sample a lot of early B-Westerns to get some idea of what the genre looks like. Actually, on second thought, you would be far, far better off in getting the 10 DVD 20 movie collection "Tough Guys of the West" if that is your goal. That collection gives you a much better bargain in terms of quality than the "50 Western Classics."
Here's another tip for you. If you are looking at B-Westerns for the first time you might want to check out the Hopalong Cassidy films offered by Platinium - there are 40 films total on 5 DVD volumes that you can get really cheap! Some vendors sell these for less than two dollars a disc (each disc has 5 films on it)! Do the math - with shipping you are looking at about $1 per film. And they are in absolute pristine condition! Check it out - the Hopalong Cassidy films are among the very best B-Westerns ever made. The Red Ryder series is also available on DVD issued by VCI and I have seen most of them - they are great films with pretty good film transfers - you will not be disappointed in those.

Life/Planet Earth Collection Review

Life/Planet Earth Collection
Average Reviews:

Sadly, Oprah's narration of "Life" is horrible. Read some of the reviews for the single title "Life" by Oprah. Her narration is both childish and dreadful. If you want the best of these two beautiful and astonishing programs get "Planet Earth" and "Life" both narrated by David Attenborough. They are both available on Blu Ray and you will pay the about same amount as for the Attenborough-Oprah package. Both Life and Planet Earth are spectacular and feature some of the greatest nature photography you will ever see. I'm sorry to give this just one star. If both titles were by David Attenborough it would be five stars.

Martial Arts 50 Movie Pack Collection Review

Martial Arts 50 Movie Pack Collection

Some of the titles in MARTIAL ARTS 50 MOVIE PACK are so obscure, very little information could be gotten about them. A couple of selections here are from a long-forgotten American TV series. There's even a few spaghetti-karate films thrown into the mix. The majority however originate in the Far East: Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.
Lots of choreography went into the making of these movies; undoubtedly, there were a few unintentional injuries along the way, too. The action and pratfalls are non-stop and the plots mere window dressing for the foot-to-head combat scenes. For all martial arts fans these cinematic slugfests are sure-to-please.
Overall rating was achieved by averaging out viewer polling on 42 of these titles. Based on a film resource website's 1 to 10 scoring system, the current rating for MARTIAL ARTS is: 4.8.

Beyond Reality - The First Season (2006) Review

Beyond Reality - The First Season (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
BEYOND REALITY appeared on the USA cable network for two seasons. Forty-four half-hour episodes aired between 10/1/91 and 3/1/93. The show centered on two university-based parapsychologists, portrayed by Shari Belafonte (as Laura Wingate) and Carl Marotte (as J.J. Stillman) and their explorations of poltergeists, telekinesis and other such eerie phenomena. Also appearing infrequently was Nicole de Boer (as Celia Powell).
MCE's DVD set of BEYOND REALITY contains all 20 Season #1 episodes plus two from the second season. They probably did this to evenly divide this program's catalog into lots of 22, but short of consulting J.J and Laura, we can't know for certain if a Season #2 collection is in the foreseeable future.THE RAY BRADBURY THEATER - Complete Series consists of 65 episodes-- all based on show host Bradbury's short stories. It's a little-seen and fascinating 1980's anthology of sci-fi and fantasy that featured such fine actors as William Shatner, Jeff Goldblum, Leslie Nielson and Peter O'Toole. The "Beyond Reality" Season #1 list is sequential by original airdate.
Also included are episode titles and featured guest stars.
Mirror, Mirror (10/4/91) - Lynne Cormack/Nicole de Boer/Peter Dvorsky
The Doppelgänger (10/11/91) - Len Doncheff/Kenneth Walsh
Miracle Worker 10/18/91) - Chris Makepeace/Cedric Smith/Nick Rice
Return Visit (10/25/91) - Cynthia Preston/James B. Douglas/Jill Frappier
Intimate Shadows (11/1/91) - Scott Hylands/Kate Trotter/Steve Whistance-Smith
Echoes of Evil (11/8/91) - Doris Petrie/Richard Sali/Susan Kottman
Range of Motion (11/15/91) - Deborah Duchene/Nicholas Campbell/Susan Hogan
The Cold (11/22/91) - Robert More/Janet Laine-Green/Laura Press
The Bridge (11/29/91) - Nathaniel Moreau/Sandy Quan/David Ferry

Sci-Fi Classics 100 Movie Pack Review

Sci-Fi Classics 100 Movie Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's get the "down side" out of the way immediately:
Video quality on budget-priced DVD sets is not always suitable for hi-def or big screen TVs. These discs work best on standard size tube sets.
Audio levels from this manufacturer have in the past been somewhat low-- yet not unlistenable if you have a decent sound system.
And now the "up side":
A hundred unusual selections for 30 cents apiece!
Compact packages. Especially with MILL CREEK sets, thousands of movies can easily fit on a single shelf.
Lesser-known films and genuine obscurities-- great for avid collectors.
Months of entertainment in a single box.
The SCI-FI 100 MOVIE PACK doesn't offer anything not previously released by this manufacturer. It does however convienently bring together several genres of American, Japanese and European 'B' movies. Besides science fiction this set also contains horror, fantasy, swords & sandals and mystery films.
An example of a non-sci-fier would be "How Awful About Alan." This Aaron Spelling TV movie is more of a mystery-drama than anything else. It's the story of a man with psychosomatic blindness due to guilt over his father's death. Alan is convinced someone is trying to harm him, and he just may be right.
There's not room to comment on the other 99 movies here. You can see from the list below that this is an unusual gathering, to say the least.
Another mammoth MILL CREEK item is their HORROR 100 MOVIE PACK (24pc). It'll keep you screaming for many a full moon!
.

The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection, Vols. 1 & 2 Review

The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection, Vols. 1 and 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Universal has finally seen the folly of their ways in selling this set exclusively via Best Buy and is re-releasing both volumes 1 & 2 in one set. Included are all ten films in the original sets, but once again there will be no extra features - just the films themselves and some trailers. If you love the great campy horror films of the 1950's you'll love this set. The following is from the press release on the new combined set:
Tarantula (1955, 81 min.)
An experiment to create a growth formula that could end starvation evolves into a nightmare when a contaminated spider grows gargantuan - with an appetite to match!
The Mole People (1956, 78 min.)
Deep below the surface of the earth, three scientists stumble upon a tyrannical tribe of albinos who have enslaved a mutant - and dangerous - race of mole people.
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957, 81 min.)
After encountering a mysterious radioactive mist, an ordinary businessman finds his physical size diminishing as his ordinary household becomes a terrifying trap of doom. By the way, who keeps a cat in the house with a six inch tall husband around?
The Monolith Monsters (1957, 76 min.)
In a desperate race against time and nature, a geologist and a scientist must find a way to stop effects of killer outer-space rocks that are literally petrifying people with fear!
Monster on the Campus (1958, 76 min)
Terror sweeps a college campus after the discovery of a prehistoric fish that turns animals and humans that come into contact with it into bloodthirsty monsters.
Dr. Cyclops (1940, 78 min) in COLOR!
A brilliant but deranged physicist shrinks his enemies to one-fifth of their normal size when they begin to challenge his unconventional experiments.
Cult of the Cobra (1955, 80 min)
Vengeance is sworn against six American GI's after they witness a clandestine ceremony worshiping beautiful women who can change into serpents.
The Land Unknown (1957, 79 min)
When a navy expedition crash-lands in a crater thousands of miles below sea level, they encounter a hot, tropical landscape of prehistoric terror filled with ferocious dinosaurs.
The Deadly Mantis (1957, 79 min)
A paleontologist teams up with the military to battle a huge praying mantis when it goes on the attack in metropolitan cities after being released from an Arctic iceberg.
The Leech Woman (1960, 77 min)
Determined to recapture her beauty, a woman discovers a compound that will restore youth - but only when it's combined with fluid taken from bodies of the newly dead.

Classic British Thrillers (The Phantom Light / Red Ensign / The Upturned Glass) Review

Classic British Thrillers (The Phantom Light / Red Ensign / The Upturned Glass)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The two Michael Powell directed pictures in CLASSIC BRITISH THRILLERS give good indication of the great work he'd produce later, although they are somewhat hampered by small budgets. The James and Pamela Mason murder mystery is quite engaging.
SYNOPSES--
THE PHANTOM LIGHT-- The lighthouse keeper at a quaint Welsh coast village dies mysteriously, and his lighthouse is now supposedly haunted-- an unexplained light keeps shining on the scene of his death. The story's atmosphere is literal, with lots of blanketing fog, plus a murder mystery that's equally shrouded and obscured. Primarily filmed within a lighthouse, this whodunit has more than its share of ethnic humor.
RED ENSIGN-- Leslie Banks plays a somewhat pushy manager of a shipyard whose revolutionary boat design encounters much opposition and skullduggery from the competition and his own financers.
THE UPTURNED GLASS-- A story told in flashback. Neurosurgeon's affair with a married woman ends with her defenestrated death. Suspecting the woman's sister is involved, the surgeon plots revenge on her. Easily the best of this small collection. Co-written by Pamela Mason.CLASSIC FILM NOIR, Vol. 3 - 10 Movie Pack (from ST. CLAIR) contains one very fine British-made suspense movie, plus many other unusual stories.Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 viewer poll ratings found at a film resource website.

he British Cinematograph Films Act of 1927 was passed to give motion pictures made in the United Kingdom an edge over Hollywood imports. However technically crude, these low budget quota quickies provided on-the-job training for some of the biggest stars of the Golden Age of British Cinema. THE PHANTOM LIGHT (1935)The disappearance of two lighthouse keepers stationed on the desolate coast of Wales is linked to the specter of a rogue beacon that lures freight ships to their destruction on the rocks. Gordon Harker (Alfred Hitchcock s THE RING) and Binnie Hale (LOVE FROM A STRANGER) star as bickering sleuths who must solve the mystery of The Phantom Light or become its next victims! RED ENSIGN (1935)With England s commercial fleet in decline, idealistic shipbuilder David Barr (THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME s Leslie Banks) conceives a radical new design to revolutionize the industry. Denied capital to proceed by his firm s board of directors, Barr funds the project himself, attracting the support of a beautiful heiress and the attention of a ruthless rival who will stop at nothing, even murder, to obtain Barr s top secret design. THE UPTURNED GLASS (1947)After sparing the eyesight of a young patient, Dr. Michael Joyce falls in love with the girl s grateful mother, Emma Wright (Rosamund John), whose husband has been absent for years. When her man returns unexpectedly, Emma reluctantly ends the affair, only to be killed in a mysterious fall. Using his surgical skills to trace the killer, Michael begins his own investigation but has no intention of handing the murderer over to the police.

The Lawless Years: First Complete Season (1959) Review

The Lawless Years: First Complete Season (1959)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those who are waiting for The Untouchables to come out on DVD (don't hold your breath!)here is something almost as satisfying--The Lawless Years. It's only a half hour show, and there's less 'violence', but this show definitely has the same flavor of the times as The Untouchables and James Gregory is superb as Gangster Squad detective, Barney Ruditsky. In fact, many of the best character actors of the early 60s who have appeared on The Untouchables also guest star on The Lawless Years. However, Robert Stack does NOT make an appearance as Eliot Ness. That would have been perfect since James Gregory has guest starred on The Untouchables, but the person who wrote that is mistaken.
I hope the second season of this show will soon be released, it's well worth it. You won't be disappointed with this one, they cover all the gangsters of the era, though some names have been changed, but you will be able to guess who they are.
Don't let the garish sepia tone (more burnt orange than sepia) keep you away from viewing this show. Perhaps they tinted it to distinguish it from the crisp black and white noir of The Untouchables. But you will get so absorbed in the show you will soon get used to the unusual color tint.

This is a 4-disc set of 50's era TV sit-coms, variety and drama for the Christmas season. An added bonus is a link for a Virtual Fireplace that you can keep on the screen while listening to music, wrapping presents, trimming the tree, etc. Cozy.
This set is one of the best values I have seen for the price.
Contents include 5 Christmas episodes of Ozzie and Harriet, 4 of the Beverly Hillbillies, also Christmas episodes of Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Dragnet, Burns and Allen, Abbot and Costello, Petticoat Junction. Variety and music, such as Liberace and Fred Waring. Drama includes Four Star Playhouse, Dickens' A Christmas Carol with Vincent Price, even Sherlock Holmes and a Lux Theatre production of Holiday Affair. Many, many more. I was astounded to see the commercials included with all of the shows, giving it a real 50's feel! Wonderful step back in time! This is truly marvelous entertainment for the Christmas Season. Sit back with a mug of hot cocoa and some Christmas cookies, with the Christmas tree lights twinkling, curl up and enjoy!!
