(More customer reviews)"Wreaked" shows aspiring actor Ryan (Theo Montgomery) allowing his career and life to be sabotaged by the torch he carries for a druggie ex-boyfriend, Daniel, who ran out of his life at least once before.
Ryan lands his first role with a acting group and celebrates by getting off on a web-clip by hustler Taylor (name from the commentary). Shortly thereafter Ryan comes home and finds the ex-Daniel waiting on the veranda. Happy Ryan is willing to take Daniel back if he gets a job and stops taking drugs. Daniel charms and agrees, stifling any further conversation with kisses and more. Ryan's life starts sliding downhill, and his job performance suffers. Taylor the hustler turns out to be a pal of Daniel's too, leading to an explicit three-way. To make the point clear, there is a photography student, who gets roped into first Daniel's and then Ryan's game. Ryan's life drifts out of control. He knows what to do but just loses the will to do it.
The DVD comes with a commentary by the two directors and Theo Montgomery, a deleted scene, an extended mixture of scenes, a photo gallery, and some TLA trailers.
The film gives a serious, focused depiction of the problems of unsuitable partners and of drugs and also gives a reasonably realistic and frequent display of bodies engaged in sex and in the incidentals of daily life. The actors are very good looking; Theo Montgomery as Ryan is spectacularly cute looking and did a good job as the makeup person (source: the commentary) on the set.
The production has multiple weaknesses. The sets generally shriek cheap, not always unsuitably. For example, the one window in Ryan's house is covered with a sheet. The sound ranges from clear to faint. The film stock is fairly grainy. There are a number of continuity lapses. For example, in one sequence Ryan goes to bed shirtless, wakes up early in one t-shirt, and then gets out of bed in another. The supporting actors were undistinguished. The commentary says the photographer's name is Rodney, but the character introduces himself as Tyler to Daniel. The commentary states that much of the character-development footage was cut out (but not included as an extra; there are photos in the gallery that probably came from these sequences).
The credits give some actor names and the co-directors' names but none other. There is no listing matching character and actor. I can't find the names given listed on imbd.com; are they all pseudonyms? It appears nobody wants to be identified too much with the film, although the directors suggested a prequel was possible.
Still, the film was a good entry in the underused category of serious film that wants to display serious skin. The ads suggest this is a film for lovers of twinks. They're right.

(More customer reviews)I will admit, One of the main reasons I wanted to see this movie was because of the buzz about it being one of the most sexually explicit movies ever made in the non-porn industry. I didn't really expect to find the movie interesting, I just wanted to see what everyone was talking about.
The first minute or so was nothing but explicit sex and I almost turned the movie off thinking it was going to be pointless, that this was all there was to the movie, but I had nothing better to do so I kept watching.
This movie is not porn, nor is it erotica. This movie IS an uncensored look at the truth about love and sex, and is probably one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is brutally honest, thought provoking, intense at times, and funny at others. These are characters that we can relate to, because they are real.
I can not say enough positive things about this movie, it is art, it is truth, it is exceptional.
It will definitely be a part of my DVD collection.

(More customer reviews)I love HBO shows so when I found this on sale for $19.99 I grabbed it. I wouldn't recommend paying more than about $30 for it - if I'd paid more I would have been very disappointed. I haven't had an experience with a show like this before - by the second episode I thought it was one of the best TV shows I'd ever seen, up there with "Six Feet Under". It was fascinating to see a very realistic view of four different relationships, shown very realistically, even including very real sex scenes. That somehow made the couples even more human. By about the seventh episode I got tired of the characters' slow, meandering everyday lives, and the whining. I started thinking the sex scenes were just interfering with the progress of the story, and I realized, it's difficult to maintain interest in very realistic lives when you're living one yourself every day. I guess I learned I enjoy more drama and excitement in a TV show than I realized.

(More customer reviews)To all those reading this, I hope you take the time to consider. I will not say that this video is a waste of your time and money. I will say it was a waste of mine though. The concept was a good idea. However, they fell short of the supposed intended target. This series is severely lacking in the detail work that makes a series great. Their hero is painted a hero from the beginning, he isn't made to stand the trails that make a hero. While the "bad-guy" (in my opinion, the hottest guy on the show) lacks the depth and definition that made him a villian.
This show is only focusing on the young and shallow. If they wanted to attack all genres of the community, a little action, a dash of humor appropriately placed, and a well-served villian who knows how to act with a flair. Garnish the serving with some well placed hi-jinxs that is sure to keep the audience feeding out of their hand. That, and you could have picked a better looking hero.
One of the key differences between DANTE'S COVE and THE LAIR is that THE LAIR has no cliff-hangers or segways. Everything here is cut and dry as you would expect a vampire to act. Undead or alive, this series lacks the backbone to make it a true cult classic in the gay community. Hope they have better luck next time around.

Tripping the Rift: The Complete Third Season (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)I really like Tripping the Rift; I have the first two seasons on DVD. Then I purchased the movie, which I was very disappointed with, so I was hoping that season three would bring me back to the fold. Unfortunately, not so much. 3 or 4 of the episodes are straight from the movie (or the movie is straight from 3 or 4 episodes depending how you look at it), so the claims of "13 ALL-NEW EPISODES" on the DVD cover doesn't ring true.
I also don't understand how they came up with the censoring of foul language. In one episode ("Raiders of the Lost Crock of $%?&*!"), they bleeped the word b*****d (but left enough in that you could tell what it was) and a couple of minutes later the word was said again but not bleeped. It seems to be a little random. I don't get why they can't put out a "grown-up" version of Tripping the Rift (i.e. rated 18 or even 16). I can handle the swearing, the crude jokes, even a little CGI nudity (the censored banners in the Raiders episode mentioned above).
There are no extras with this DVD set. No outtakes, no trailers, nothing. It really seemed like it was put together quickly and released. If I hadn't seen the movie, I probably would rate this season a bit higher. I feel the movie has damaged the franchise somewhat. Who knows if there will be a fourth season. If there is, I hope they realise there are grown ups out there who watch "Tripping the Rift" and we're OK with adult content in our favourite animated shows.

(More customer reviews)With the announcement that "90210', based on the popular hit 1990's drama series "Beverly Hills 90210' would be returning to television and feature stars from the past but also new stars for the present, the series definitely received a lot of hype and excitement. The series would be created by Darren Star ("Runaway", "Cashmere Mafia", "Beverly Hills90210', "Melrose Place" and "Sex and the City") and developed by Rob Thomas ("Dawson's Creek" and "Veronica Mars"), Jeff Judah ("Life as We Know It") and Gabe Sachs ("Freaks & Geeks", "Just Shoot Me" and "Undeclared") and began airing on the CW in 2008.
The series revolves around Harry Wilson moving his family from Kansas back to his home in Beverly Hills to live with his rich mother Tabitha and become principal of West Beverly Hills High School and his teenage children Annie and adopted son Dixon getting used to their new environment. Similar to the original series, there are a lot of twists and turns, but to best illustrate what the series is about is introducing the primary character of the series.
The Wilson Family
Harry Wilson (played by Rob Estes, "Women's Murder Club", "Providence" and "Suddenly Susan") - The father and husband. Also, the principal of West Beverly Hills High School. Used to be a wild person when he was younger and used to date Tracy Clark (the mother of Naomi) and both had a child which he never knew about.
Debbie Wilson (Lori Loughlin, "Full House", "In Case of Emergency" and "Summerland") - Loving mother and wife. A professional photographer who works at home and doesn't really get along with Harry's mother that well.
Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes, "Degrassi: The Next Generation") - The daughter who is trying to fit in and high school. Enjoys the performing arts and dates the popular jock Ethan Ward who once was in long relationship with Naomi. A former friend of Annie and now rival.
Dixon Wilson (Tristan Wilds, "The Wire") - The adoptive son of the Wilson family. Athletic and because he is African-American and was raised by a Caucasian family, he often feels like an outsider but for the most part, his parents and family love him. He dates Annie's good friend Silver. Dixon works at the Peach Pit.
Tabitha Wilson (Jessica Walter, "Arrested Development", "Trapper, John, M.D.", "Play Misty For Me") - Mother of Harry and lives in a mansion in Beverly Hills. She loves to drink alcohol too much and often meddles into the parenting of Harry and Debbie, thus her relationship with her daughter-in-law is not the best. A former actress.
The Clark Family
Tracy Clark (Christina Moore, "Hawthorne", The Bad Girls Guide") - A rich wife who is currently in a bitter divorce and is the mother of Naomi. She used to date Harry when they were teenagers and were a big couple. With Harry back in town, she starts to have interest in him despite knowing he's married. She reveals to Harry that they have a child.
Naomi Clark (AnnaLynne McCord, "Nip/Tuck", "American Heiress") - The popular diva at West Beverly High School and dated the popular jock Ethan Ward. And is used to being treated special. Spoiled but also from a broken family which leads her to bad boys. She has a bitter rivalry with Annie.
The Taylor/Silver Family
Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth, "Beverly Hills 90210', "What I Like About You") - The West Beverly Hills High School guidance counselor. Has a son with Dylan McKay and takes care of him and her sister Erin. With her recent split up with Dylan, she tries to have a relationship with teacher Ryan. And to further complicate things, her old high school friend Brenda Walsh is back. Kelly helps the teens at West Beverly Hills High School.
Erin Silver (Jessica Stroup, "Homecoming") - The anti-student who runs a blog at her high school making fun of the popular students (her former friends). Because of her mother's instability at home, she moves in with her older sister Kelly. She is Annie's best friend and dates her Annie's brother Dixon.
Other Main Characters
Ethan Ward (Dustin Milligan, "Runaway") - The high school jock and dated the most popular girl on campus Naomi. But he had a summer fling a long time ago with Annie Wilson and now that she's back, he ends up having a relationship with her. Despite his playboy ways, he gradually grows up as a person.
Adrianna Tate-Duncan (Jessica Lowndes, "The Haunting of Molley Hartley, "Greek") - The actress who's parents got into a bitter divorce and because her family doesn't make much money now, her mother pushes her to get acting or commercial roles to support them. The stress has forced her to become a drug addict and eventually pushing people away from her. Best friend of Naomi and eventually begins dating Navid.
Ryan Matthews (Ryan Eggold, "Dirt") - Ryan is a teacher at West Beverly High School. A teenager that everyone likes and is dating Kelly Taylor. Because he was messing around with an undercover officer (posing as a student at the high school), rumors ran rampant that he was having sexual relations with a student and damaged his reputation.
Navid Shirazi (Michael Steger, "The Cheetah Girls") - The media/tech expert and geek. Good friends with Dixon and eventually starts dating Adrianna and standing by her when no one else wanted to.

Caligula (The Unrated Edition) (1980) Review

(More customer reviews)I will concentrate on the movie's historical accuracy (or its lack of it), since the previous reviews seem to either have overlooked it, or claimed that it is "historically accurate", or on the opposite extreme, that it totally ignored history.
"Caligula" does have some merit from the historical point of view, surely already present in Gore Vidal's original script. It's also very weak in many points.
The bare events of Caligula's life and reign are actually quite accurate. It may surprise many viewers that most of the secondary characters - Emperor Tiberius, Senator Nerva, the praetorian prefect Macro, Tiberius's grandson and Caligula's rival for the succession Gemellus, Caesonia, Chaerea (who murdered Caligula), his sister Drusilla - were all historical and, as far as the facts have come down to us, their portrayal in "Caligula" was fairly accurate, at least according to some ancient authors.
Tiberius did retire to the island of Capri in his last years and did invite the elderly Nerva to join him there, and ancient authors do claim that he indulged in sexual perversions there. Nerva really committed suicide as shown in the movie.
The conversations between Caligula, Nerva and Tiberius, probably by Vidal, really reflect contemporary views and issues - for instance, the deification of Julius Caesar and Augustus, Tiberius's predecessors: Tiberius was totally cynical about the whole thing, whereas Caligula firmly believed it. Throughout the movie, many of Caligula's lines come straight from ancient authors.
On the other hand, Nerva's comment on Caligula's "gift for logic" seems to owe more to Camus than to ancient sources - still, a nice touch, I thought.
Tiberius's murder by Caligula and Macro, Caligula's removal of Macro and Gemellus, his incestuous relationship with Drusilla, her death, his marriage to Caesonia, her giving him a daughter, his increasing tyranny, his farcical invasion of Germany and attempted invasion of Britain, and his murder by his own guard - are all historical facts, and on the whole not too inaccurately shown in the movie.
On the other hand, the movie's biggest weaknesses from the historical point of view are (1) the way it *looks* and (2) the suggestion that Caligula's and Tiberius's depravity were somehow "normal", part of Rome's "decadence".
The sets and clothes all look more like something from a Fellini film than from ancient Rome. Tiberius's palace on Capri is perhaps the most unrealistic, along with that ship, and the execution machine - and countless details.
The clothes aren't very realistic, either. Romans were more casual about nudity than we are today, and I suppose that their clothes might reveal much some times. But I doubt that Roman ladies would be as casual about parading half-naked as portrayed in the movie (I mean in normal situations, not the sex scenes).
Moreover, it's simply not true that "orgies" such as that portrayed in the movie were common among the Roman upper classes. Actually adultery - also on the part of males - was an offense punishable by death, at least for the upper classes (this didn't cover prostitution). The vast majority of the Roman senatorial class would, and did, find behavior such as that of Tiberius and Caligula scandalous.
However, Caligula's in cognito wanderings through Rome after Drusilla's death give perhaps for the first time in a movie a good impression of what ancient Rome actually was at night - dangerous, dark, chaotic, where no person of means would venture without an armed escort.
I also enjoyed the glimpse of what an emperor's routine largely consisted of, with Tiberius and Caligula stamping their seal onto endless piles of official documents.
"Caligula" was obviously intended to be mainly a pornographic movie - Bob Guccione made sure of that. But it also, at some point, was intended to have a core of historical accuracy, which is why Gore Vidal was asked to write the script.
This core is still present in the movie, and it's not true that you don't learn anything of Roman history by watching it.
But of course, I know that that's not what most people will watch it for. So perhaps Guccione was right.

Nip/Tuck: Season 5, Part 2 Review

(More customer reviews)Yes, there are only 8 episodes but, they are great episodes. A lot of the reviewers rated this 1 star for the price and not the actual content of the dvd. Nip/Tuck is still as good as ever and it shows it has some of the best music around in the 5.2 opener. I've never seen a more perfect song to fit a scene than the opener of 5.2. Over all these last 8 episodes are 10/10. Nip/Tuck continues to shock and awe you.

The Lost Language of Cranes (1992) Review

(More customer reviews)This film is based on David Leavitt's book of the same name, which takes place entirely in New York City. When the film version was made, with Leavitt's blessing, the scene is switched entirely to London. However, the core lesson of the film, about deep-seeded family secrets and how they erode the facade of a middle class family, stays in tact.
Brian Cox and Eileen Atkins, two of Britain's best character actors, are incredibly good as the parents, Owen and Rose Benjamin. Owen is an Academic, and Rose is a Book Editor. The irony of Rose being in a profession where she needs an eye for detail is not lost as it contrasts to her own life. She has somehow managed to overlook that her husband is a closeted homosexual. In their generation, if a man felt or knew he was gay, he married, procreated, and carried on with life in most cases. The Benjamin's marriage could be like most long-term marriages without passion. Rose has had her affairs, mainly for the physical love she is missing from her husband. Owen wants desperately to explore the side of his life he has been repressing, but, so far, spends a good amount of his free time roaming gay cinemas.
Adding to all of this is that their son, Phillip, a handsome book editor, very well-played by Angus MacFayden, is also gay. He is out to his friends, but not to his parents. He is madly in love with an American graphic artist, Elliott, played by Corey Parker. Phillip's belief that he has found the love of his life leads him to finally come out to his parents. But, he has no idea of the can of worms he has opened in the life and marriage of his parents. Rose would have been content to keep secrets indefinitely. However, Owen's son's admission opens the floodgates and propels Owen toward his new life.
The film is still fairly faithful to the book, which I also recommend very highly. The acting is top-notch, as often seems the case in British-made films. The story is engrossing in its brevity, and strong in its lessons of honesty, betrayal, and the ultimate destruction of long-held secrets.

This show just keeps on getting better and better, as Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha's characters' are given more depth. And there are more episodes on this season than there were on the first for us to get our SATC fix.
Episode1: TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME: Carrie tries to get over Big; Miranda gets frustrated at the girls for talking about their dating woes; Samantha sleeps with a NY Yankee
Episode 2: THE AWFUL TRUTH: Carrie's friend Susan breaks if off with her husband; Miranda's new boyfriend likes to talk dirty in the bedroom; Samantha's boyfriend wants to go to couple's counseling.
Episode 3: THE FREAK SHOW: Samantha dates a guy who is into kinky sex; Charlotte starts seeing a guy who is good at a certain sexual act; Carrie goes on a blind date.

Episode 16: WAS IT GOOD FOR YOU? :Charlotte is dating an orthopedic surgeon; Smantha has dinner with a gay couple shes friends with and discovers they want to have a threesome with her; Charlotte signs up for a tantric sex class; Carrie sees a recovering alcoholic.

(More customer reviews)I love BBQ and watched every second of this series. I liked everything about it except the three judges. They were terrible and here is why: Their scores seem frequently very arbitrary and you don't feel at the end of the episode that the best competitor won. The live audience also hates the judges. You can hear their complaints frequently. In addition to the poor scoring system, these three judges had absolutely no charisma. They were rude and self absorbed. The had no rapport with the competitors, the audience, or each other. Again I love the concept of this show, and still enjoyed it overall. I hope the have a season 2, and find better judges!!!! One of the reasons American Idol has been so successful is due to the interaction of the judges with the audience, competitors, and each other. Get a clue people!

(More customer reviews)Sex and the City is the best show in television! However, I see the first season as a warm-up to the seasons which follow this one. Also, the theme music is a little bit different. We meet our four heroines: Carrie Bradshaw, the writer; Charlotte York, the conservative one; Samantha Jones, the (...); and Miranda, the sardonic, acid-tongued lawyer. I was a little bit disturbed by the way Carrie talked to the camera in the first few episodes... but the first season kicks off the season by introducing us to the City that Never Sleeps.
EPISODE 1 "SEX AND THE CITY": We meet the four ladies; Mr. Big comes onto the scene; we also meet Sanford Blatch and his opinion on gay relationships and sex; the women discuss (and try out) the theory that women can have sex the same way men can.
EPISODE 2: "MODELS AND MORTALS": The episode is all about models, as Miranda dates a guy obsessed with them (a "modelizer") and Carrie briefly dates a man who is a model.
EPISODE 3: "BAY OF MARRIED PIGS": Carrie visits married friends at their house in the Hamptons and the ladies discuss the differences between married couples and singles. Miranda is set up with a lesbian for a corporate party.
EPISODE 4: "VALLEY OF THE TWENTY-SOMETHING GUYS": Carrie keeps running into Big, and considers dating him; Samantha goes for a guy in his twenties.
EPISODE 5: "THE POWER OF FEMALE SEX": While playing poker the four women discuss the idea of women using sex to gain power; Carrie runs into an old friend of hers who introduces her to a charming French architect.
EPISODE 6: "SECRET SEX": You know that promotional photo of Carrie on the side of the bus in the credits? This is the episode in which that photo is taken. Carrie starts dating Big; she ponders the question of some people who are ashamed of the people they date; Charlotte dates a rabbi.
EPISODE 7: "THE MONOGAMISTS": Carrie tries to have a monogamous relationship with Big; Miranda gets serious with Skipper.
EPISODE 8: "THREE'S A CROWD": The ladies discuss the topic of threesomes, as Samantha becomes involved with a married couple and Charlotte and her boyfriend try to add another woman to their bedroom routine.
EPISODE 9: "THE TURTLE AND THE HARE": At a friend's wedding, Samantha is asked out on a date by another guest; when she is dumped, she tries for another guy who was at the wedding. Sanford gripes about the gay dating scene. And what is the rabbit??
EPISODE 10: "THE BABY SHOWER": The women are invited to a friend's baby shower; is Carrie pregnant?
EPISODE 11: "THE DROUGHT": Miranda hasn't had sex in three months; Carrie is convinced that she and Big will never have sex again. The question is, How often is normal?
EPISODE 12: "OH, COME ALL YE FAITHFUL": Miranda's dating a guy who takes a shower after sex; Charlotte is convinced she'll never get married.

The Secret of My Success (1987) Review

(More customer reviews)I think a good test of how good or bad a movie is, is by how long it feels. Some 90 m. movies feel like three hours and vice versa. Secret of My Success feels like a half an hour. That's pretty good.
Brantley moves from Kansas to NYC in order to make it in the corporate world. Problem: he gets laid off even before he starts. He's a trooper, though, and doesn't want to run home with his tail between his legs so he goes to his Uncle Howard for a job. It's not exactly what Brantley envisioned as he is stuck in the mailroom. Using corporate bureaucracy against itself, he manages to swing a job as a vice-president. It gets pretty funny from there as Brantley tries to maintain two identities without being found out. The elevator scenes are priceless!
This movie is the definitive eighties comedy. Michael J. Fox gets to showcase his screwball comedy antics and the rest of the cast is equally fine. Helen Slater stands out as a female executive that manages to break through the glass ceiling only to be pressed up against it and fondled by the smarmy CEO. "Auntie Vera" is also a hoot as the sex-starved wife of Uncle Howard.
The DVD doesn't offer too much in the way of extras, but that's okay because the movie alone is worth having on disc. Get this one right away.
